2 July 29th: Seventeenth Sunday In Ordinary Time FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, In last week s bulletin, I told you about two summer films I saw. This time, I d like to tell you about a third, which was my favorite. Entitled Summer in the Forest, this documentary tells the inspiring story of Jean Vanier and L Arche. After a stint in the Navy, this Canadian man was asked by a priest in the 1960 s to oversee a group residence (to be called L Arche French meaning the Ark ) for developmentally disabled persons outside Paris. These individuals, once considered rejects or damaged goods, used to be locked away, warehoused and forgotten in asylums (looney bins?). Vanier s vision was for L Arche to be, not an institution with staff serving clients, but a genuine home in which all lived together and formed a daily network of friendship, peace and love. To be human is to have a home where you are accepted and where you accept others. The way Vanier brought all these inhabitants together (as if in a contemporary Noah s Ark) strikes us as a simple plan, but the dynamic took off like magic. There are now dozens of L Arche communities all over the world, and they effectively give intellectually and mentally challenged persons a profound experience of being cared for and, themselves, selflessly caring for others. Vanier is now about 90 years old and is considered a living saint. What Mother Teresa did for the materially destitute, Vanier has done for human beings who are often considered to have the lowest social status because of their handicaps. At the end of this film highlighting members of L Arche communities simply sharing their daily joys and sorrows, the theater audience continued to sit motionless and reflective for a considerable period of time long after the final film credits had scrolled. 4 SUMMER MISSION APPEAL AT ST RAPHAEL S AUGUST 11 th AND 12 th TO BENEFIT THE MISSIONARIES OF JESUS The Missionaries of Jesus (MD) is an international and multicultural religious missionary community. It was founded in the Philippines on June 12, 2002 by a group of 41 men called and inspired by the mission and humanity of Jesus, who calls us to make disciples of all nations (Mt 28:19). They call themselves friends and disciples. It is their desire to gather more friends and co-disciples. Their objective is the promotion of the universality of the Christian message through presence (witness and dialogue alike), proclamation and prayer. Their missionis to unveil the real face of Jesus hidden in our brothers and sisters in the mountains, in the plains, in the forest, in the city where we live and work. They minister in the Philippines (Antipolo, Modesta, Cubao, Baguio, Davao, Digos, Lanao, Lubang Islands); in Papua, New Guinea (lae); in Guatemala (Tierra Blanca); and in the USA (Los Angeles and Washington, DC). One of their priorities is to work and live with indigenous people for the purposes of relief and health care, for education (literacy programs), and for pastoral work (catechetical formation). The appeal will be made here by Father Gino Santos Alhambra Santos, a founding member of the community, who was born in Manila and also ministered in Hong Kong and in Los Angeles. The second collection on the weekend of August 11 th and 12 th is for the Missionaries of Jesus. Be aware there is no specific envelope in the parish support envelopes for this. For exchange purposes, checks should be made out to ST. RAPHAEL CHURCH, with the notation Summer Mission Appeal. Your support is appreciated! They can be picked up, along with the banner and certificate, this coming Wednesday, 3 pm to 5 pm, at the rectory office. HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE Msgr. Jonas Achacoso is hosting a pilgrimage to the Holy Land on October 31 to November 9, The trip costs $2,999 which includes: round trip airfare from JFK, first class hotels, services of finest English-Spanish speaking guides, breakfast and dinner daily. It is important that we not only grow, nurture and share our gifts; but that we also teach our children and encourage others to do the same. This is the communal aspect of the Catholic faith. We are the Body of Christ. We are called to be dependent on each other and not live in isolation. The Bible says, your abundance at the present time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want, that there may be equality (2 Corinthians 8:14).
