2 FROM THE PASTOR... February 12th: Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, On this World Marriage Day weekend, we invite married couples to renew their marriage vows at our parish Masses. To each couple who do, we present a little symbolic token of the occasion. This year the memento is...a little rock! No, it s not a pet rock, that long-gone promotional fad of the mid-1970 s. This rock is different. First, the rock stands for marriage being a rocky road. As Pope Francis has reminded husbands and wives, it s not a smooth ride, a trip without problems. It s a journey of commitment (you said I do, not I ll try ). Couples are not playing roles in a romance novel they are experiencing real life, which is often hard and complicated. Second, the rock is a reminder of our Christian faith. We are people who stand upon God as a foundation, a sturdy infrastructure for all we say and do. People who are married are called to bring a rock-solid faith to bear upon their relationship to help them navigate the surprising twists and turns of the marriage journey. Finally, the rock is not a real rock, but something called dubbed a Hollywood rock or a prop rock. It s squishy and made of foam, so that, in moments of heated arguments and angry bickering, you guys can actually hurl this rock at one another without serious orthopedic consequences. Such safe letting off steam may, possibly, resolve the squabble itself. Thanks to all our married parishioners for living out the marriage vows in good times and bad. Its purpose is declared to be: "World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as the foundation of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. HOY ES EL DIA MUNDIAL DEL MATRIMONIO La idea de celebrar el matrimonio comenzó en Baton Rouge, LA, en 1981, cuando las parejas animaron a el alcalde, el gobernador y el Obispo para proclamar el día de San Valentín como: Nosotros Creemos en el Día del Matrimonio. Jonas Achacoso organiza una peregrinación con motivo del centenario (100 años) de las apariciones en FATIMA del 11 al 21 de septiembre de La peregrinación incluye las grandes ciudades de Coímbra, Braga, Santiago de Compostela, Salamanca Ávila, Segovia, Madrid, Zaragoza y Lourdes. 6 PILGRIMAGE TO THOUGHT FOR VALENTINE S DAY: FATIMA & LOURDES Msgr. Jonas Achacoso is hosting a pilgrimage on the occasion of the centennial (100 years) anniversary of the apparitions in FATIMA on September 11-21, The pilgrimage includes the great cities of Coimbra, Braga, Santiago de Compostela, Salamanca Avila, Segovia, Madrid, Zaragoza and Lourdes. For reservations and more information, please call (718) After a couple of delays, this week our Korean parishioners experience a change of priest. This Wednesday, we welcome Father Simon Hwang Rae Chung to St. Raphael s. Father Simon, age 42, was ordained a priest in 2004, and has been working in a correctional institution (prison ministry) in his home Archdiocese of Daegu, Korea. HAPPY VALENTINE S DAY On Thursday, we bid farewell to Father Luke Byungsu Kim, as he goes back to that same Archdiocese in his homeland. Father Luke will work there with young people, encouraging them to consider the priesthood or religious life (vocations director). We are grateful for his years with us in Long Island City, and we pray the God will bless his future endeavors in the priesthood.
