1 April 22, 2018 Home Grown Youth This past month CCASTA welcomed a new Youth Ministry Director to our parish team! Shannon O Toole sat down for an interview and here is what we found: -Fr. John Where did you grow up? Right in Catonsville! I went to Notre Dame Prep for high school. Any sports/hobbies? I m a huge fan of college basketball. In my free me: if it s nice out you ll probably find me hiking in a pair of Chacos, swimming, or doing anything I can to be outside. Some other things I enjoy doing are reading (especially anything wri en by C.S. Lewis), watching Doctor Who, and making twine rosaries. Recently I ve also taken to brewing my own kombucha and a emp ng to teach myself Humbled by God s mercy, we seek to follow Christ and live the joy of the Gospel through love and service. -Mission Statement

Where did you go to college/major? I graduated from Villanova University in 2016 with a B.A. in Liberal Arts. I was pre-med and entertained hopes of going to medical school, but clearly, God had other plans for me. What is your previous work experience that you enjoyed? I just spent seventeen months with AmeriCorps living on a Catholic farm in Summers County, West Virginia. That year and a half was an incredible experience that is hard to sum up, but it certainly changed me for good. Prac cally, I learned skills in nonprofit management, sustainable living, home repair, farming, and youth ministry but living in inten onal, Chris an community means I also learned a lot about who I am and what it means to live out a radical faith in a world that is so opposed to true Chris an values. I m excited to be able to bring the Farm s cornerstones (prayer, simplicity, community, service) and the spirit of the Appalachian people to my work here at CCASTA. Can you share a brief history of your Catholic journey? I grew up Catholic and went to Catholic school my whole life, but it wasn t un l college that I dove more deeply into my faith, developed a desire to serve others, and discovered how the two inherently go hand-in-hand. A love of music and a longing for Beauty led me to join the Villanova Pastoral Musicians, where I gained a deep apprecia on for the liturgy and found a real faith community for the first me. Being more involved in campus ministry allowed me to see that the Church is very much alive, and it is full of passionate young people doing lots of really cool stuff. Our Prayer Inten on For April: What are your plans for St Augus ne Youth ministry? For me, service has been an incredibly important building block in understanding and living out my faith, so I hope to be able to incorporate more service opportuni es into the youth ministry program. Of course, I want to make sure that the youth in the parish feel empowered and that they are able to find what it is that they need to grow in their faith and in community so I want to hear from them!
