1 March 25, 2018 Easter basket o en connotes something brought by a rabbit and stuffed with eggs, chocolate, and other candies. However, in many Polish and Slavic tradi ons, an Easter basket is full of food to be blessed for the Easter feast. Here at CCASTA, we are fortunate to share this meaningful tradi onal blessing each year on Holy Saturday. *If you missed the Day of Penance, there will be one final opportunity for confession on Monday from 6-8pm at St. Augus ne. This will be the last opportunity for confession before Easter. -Fr. John Interested in the tradi on of having your Easter food blessed? Here s how: Use a basket large enough to hold the food for the feast. Cover it with a cloth to symbolize the burial cloth that wrapped Jesus body in the tomb. Fill it with: Eggs -- a tradi onal symbol of resurrec on and new life - A Russian fable is credited with the saying that an Easter egg given to another person in love will never spoil. Prior to the 1960s, eggs were not allowed during Lent, so having them again at Easter was a special joy. Bu er -- another luxury that was forbidden during Lent was bu er. The Easter food basket s bu er is Humbled by God s mercy, we seek to follow Christ and live the joy of the Gospel through love and service. -Mission Statement

2 o en shaped like a lamb to remind us of the sacrificed Lamb of God. The bu er may also be decorated with the Easter banner of white with a red cross or with cloves in the shape of a cross. Bread: Various breads are used to symbolize Christ, the Bread of Life. The breads, varying from regular, fresh-baked loaves to round sweet breads filled with oranges and raisins, fill the food baskets. Meat: Ham or lamb, veal, bacon since pork is forbidden in the Old Testament, ea ng it now symbolizes that all things are made new in Christ. Sausage: Called kielbasa in Polish, the links remind us that Christ broke the chains of death and rose triumphant from the grave as sung at the Easter Vigil. Other tradi onal items could include Wine (for joy), horseradish (a reminder of the bi er herbs of Passover), salt (a symbol of hospitality in Poland and a reminder that we are the salt of the earth ) cheese and a candle (to remind us that Christ is our light.) Don t Forget: Fas ng and Abs nence During Lent Abs nence: Catholics should abstain from meat (and items made with meat) Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent. Fas ng: Persons ages should fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On fast days, one full meal is permi ed with two smaller meals that together do not equal the full meal. Monday Friday CCASTA follows Baltimore County and Howard County public schools. When Baltimore or Howard County schools open 2 hours late, our schedule remains the same. When Bal more County or Howard County schools are closed, we will not have morning Mass and all other parish ac vi- es will be canceled. The parish offices will open at 11:30 AM, weather permi ng.
