1 February 25, 2018 My Beloved Son On this Second Sunday of Lent the readings make clear that Jesus is the beloved Son who ransoms us from sin and death. In the first reading, we see Abraham asked to sacrifice Isaac, the son of the promise, but at the last moment Abraham s beloved son Isaac is spared by the voice from heaven. In the Gospel as Jesus is Transfigured in His divine glory in the presence of Peter, James, and John, we hear the voice from heaven declare Jesus to be His beloved Son. Unlike the beloved son of Abraham, God s beloved son is sacrificed on the cross to destroy sin and death. The glory of the Transfiguration in the Gospel gives us a glimpse of Jesus divine identity as God s Son. This moment of glory is a fleeting one as Jesus is on the way to Jerusalem to suffer and die on the cross. These disciples who see him exalted will soon see him suffering and dying in shame and agony. The Transfiguration is a reminder in the darkest hour of Jesus passion and death not to forget His Divine glory, which will overcome and defeat death. The Transfiguration I have always seen as a little Easter a small preview of the glory Jesus shows on Easter morning. As we continue the challenges of our Lenten journey, we may be growing tired, we may have already stumbled and fallen, we may be ready to give up. We need to remember the preview of glory and triumph we see with the apostles on the mountain so that by following Jesus we can follow him into the new life of the Resurrection. -Fr. John Lent is an awesome me to take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliaon offered each Saturday from 3:15-3:45 at Ascension and 4:15 to 4:45 at St. Augusne. There also will be a special day of Penance on March 19 th with confessions being heard from 3-8pm in both churches. Free and Light the Upside of Confession Many of us are uncomfortable with the sacrament of Reconciliaon. We don t go oen. Maybe we haven t been in years. There are things we don t want to say out loud, don t want to remember, don t see the point of raking up. Confession may be good for the soul but like all good things, it doesn t come easy. We asked some people to share anonymously about how confession has helped them: "I recently had a problem with anger and found myself taking it out on my family. I went to Confession and discussed this with the priest. It was worth it. Asking God for forgiveness on my own was not really helping me. The Sacrament was very healing for me." connued Humbled by God s mercy, we seek to follow Christ and live the joy of the Gospel through love and service. -Mission Statement

2 Liturgical Calendar March 3rd St. Katharine Drexel-Virgin Being certain of forgiveness and mercy was amazing. I felt clean and free and light. I was no longer mad at God. Instead I knew that He was with me in that challenging time. The situation that had created so much frustration was suddenly manageable. Confession helped me with my anger. I would experience a very strong grace period after confessing it. Confession always makes me feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I hadn t been to confession in 14 years. I was nervous and even shaking a little. My college years had not been good. But my father had cancer and would not be around long. I knew I would need all the comforts of the Church to get me through his death. The priest was wonderful. He helped me remember everything and he welcomed me back to the Church! I didn t even know I d been gone, but I felt freer than I had in many years. With the healing power of the Sacrament of Reconciliaon, we can again feel the peace of heart and soul that comes from being in a good relaonship with God. You can view a video by the Archdiocese of Washington on how to go to confession at Our Prayer Intenon For February For all those who have wandered from or le the faith, that the Lord may guide them back. Prayer is essenal to becoming a mission-driven acve parish, so please pray with us! Archbishop s Annual Appeal Thank you to everyone for your patience and generosity with the in-pew sign-up portion of the appeal. We are most grateful to everyone for your contributions to this annual appeal. A Note From the Columbia Pregnancy Center Dear Fr. John, We are overwhelmed at the generosity of your parish. CCASTA raised over $8,000 this year during the Columbia Pregnancy Center baby bole campaign. That is a $5,000 increase from We are so grateful for the prayers and support of your parishioners. Thank you so much for your support. Respecully yours in Christ, Annmarie Oman Page 2
