1 March 19, 2017 Third Sunday of Lent Drawing Worshipers Closer to God s Spirit Lenten Applica on: As we fast during this Lent from sweets or candy, how about fas ng in how we spend our me? The me we spend on social media, surfing the internet, twee ng and the like o en distract us from the more important pursuits of prayer, helping others and giving of ourselves. Let s fast form was ng me to put it to be er use during these remaining days of Lent, me that is be er spent. -Fr. John Williamson Come to Jesus, hope that frees us, life that breathes in us. Come to Jesus and believe that He is Love oh come! With these simple, powerfully sung words set in vibrant music, St. Augus ne worshippers are welcomed to the St. Augus ne 5PM Youth Mass. The band, using selected contemporary and tradi- onal music, is comprised of parish teens and adults alike and is led by Mario Palumbo. Talented band members play the full spectrum of instruments. Some members have known each other since before the band s forma on and they have dedicated themselves to leading us in song. Naturally, the band members have their reasons for joining a major one is the blessings that come from members of the parish to the band members themselves. They come in many forms: expressions on people s faces while singing or listening, dancing and clapping, and those who have told the band that the music has touched their hearts leading them to increased faith. Humbled by God s mercy, we seek to follow Christ and live the joy of the Gospel through love and service. Mission Statement

2 Liturgical Calendar March 20 th Solemnity of St. Joseph March 23 rd St. Turibus of Mogrovejo March 25 th Solemnity of the Annuncia on Adora on of the Blessed Sacrament Ascension Monday, March PM 7 PM Note: Will be held at St Augus ne Church St Augus ne Friday, April 7 12 PM-7 PM During Mass, band members are conscious of the Holy Spirit trying to lead their musical expression, some mes resul ng in a spontaneous voice or instrument solo. Since the band leads song every Sunday evening, the members rotate so that everyone has a chance to par cipate. With only one prac ce on Sunday a ernoons at 2:30, they rehearse before the 5PM Mass. Mario and the other leaders are pleased when someone comes forward to audi on since they are always looking for more singers and musicians, in par cular piano, strings, woodwinds, and percussion. Even if someone would like to audi on but isn t an expert, Mario encourages him or her to contact him and at least discuss the possibility. Music to learn is posted on a website that the band uses where every member can check and prac ce before Sunday. It is said that singing is like praying twice. Without a doubt, this band s members come together each Sunday to share their talents, leading music to so en the hearts of those listening to hear the Good News. Open the eyes of my heart, Lord. Open the eyes of my heart I want to see You, I want to see You. If you are interested in learning more about joining the band, please contact Mario Palumbo at mail@omni1produc ons.com. Consider joining if you play an instrument or sing, or encourage someone you know who might consider joining. Sta ons of The Cross and Benedic on Friday, March 24, 1 PM and 7 PM-at St. Augus ne s Our Monthly Parish Prayer Inten on For the conversion of all sinners, great and small. Prayer is essen al to becoming a missiondriven ac ve parish, so please pray with us! Ascension Easter Memorial envelopes are included in your monthly envelope packet. Ascension Renova ons Work in the Sanctuary will be con nuing over the next few weeks and will be completed Palm Sunday weekend. Please remember that while weekend Masses are back in the church, in order to stay on schedule, all daily Masses and funerals will remain at St. Augus ne un l Holy Week. Thank you to all of you who are s ll making contribu ons. While there have been some unexpected costs (as there always are with construc on!) to date we have raised almost $120,000 towards the es mated cost of around $165,000. Proceeds from the Bull and Shrimp Roast will be going towards the renova ons to cut down on what we will need to borrow to pay off the project, but right now we are looking at around $40,000, so your con nued generosity is important. 3 Have a Lent to Remember If you haven t checked out our parish subscrip on to Formed.org (CCASTA code is 68JH9P) then Lent is a great me to view one of their newest and most powerful video series: Forgiven. This 5-part series for adults on the Sacrament of Reconcilia on features the tes monies of people who have experienced the transforming power of confession in their personal lives and in their rela onships. Ma hew Kelly, author of Resis ng Happiness says we all resist the things that are good for us even though they are the things that make us truly happy. We are drawn to the easy, to the paths of least resistance, to empty distrac ons. It s easier not to exercise, not to eat healthfully, not to pray. Never is resistance more evident than with the sacrament of Reconcilia on. Some mes the resistance is strong and even thinking about it makes us uncomfortable, makes us anxious. But no ma er what we ve done, no ma er how long we ve been away, Jesus is wai ng for us in the sacrament of Reconcilia on. "I'm going to be late for work because I couldn't stop watching Session Three of Forgiven. I thought the first episode was amazing but this one takes the cake!... Brought me to tears." In addi on to our regular parish Reconcilia on on Saturdays at 3:15 at Ascension and 4:15 at St Augus ne, this Lent CCASTA is offering some addi onal opportuni- es: Monday April 3rd from 6-8PM St Augus ne Church will be open for individual confessions and Tuesday April 11 at 7PM at St Augus ne we will have a Communal Penance Service. Mark your calendars, transform your Lent.
