1 Sixteenth Sunday in July 23, 2017 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church 515 N. Main St Holmen, WI THE BANE AND THE BLESSED Everyone is entitled to have an opinion. But not everyone is entitled to claim that his/her opinion is the truth. Stop someone on the street and it is very likely the person will share their opinion on many subjects: welfare, climate change, homosexuality, immigration, who should be president, the church. But I doubt we would go broke giving a dollar to everyone who has studied the questions they have answers for. My opinion about life on Mars is not as trustworthy as a NASA scientist. I can testify that I feel secure stepping off the Eiffel Tower. And I can do it. Once. The people whose opinion I trust the most are not the ones who always are certain about their views but those that are not afraid to say, I am sorry, but I don t know enough about that to offer an opinion. Too often too many of us are too soon too sure of too many things. Education worthy of the name trains a person to make trustworthy decisions based upon reasoned opinions. One opinion is not as good as another if the opinion is rooted in bias, wishful thinking or little or no reflection. If I contradict St. Thomas Aquinas about a theological matter, I do hope you have good sense to listen to St. Thomas and not me. When touching the Gospel to the world, I always defer to Pope Francis before any government leader. Truth is knowable. But because truth is of God, it is always larger, greater and grander. God does not call us to be certain but to be faithful. He calls us not to be indoctrinated but converted. He calls us not to understand God but to trust him. At least that is my opinion. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr
2 SEAS STEWARDSHIP In today s second reading, Saint Paul bids us to take comfort in knowing that when God invites us to pray to him, he knows our true needs, even if we do not. The Holy Spirit intercedes and prays for us even if we can t come up with appropriate words; even when we don t have a clue what to ask for. We are not left alone. Good stewards know that prayer is an important part of living a life in Christ. The important thing is to make space for God. Do we let God into our hearts? Do we make room for the Holy Spirit to pray within us? catholicstewardship.com KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS July Family of the Month: Christopher, Kristine, Layne, Hayden & Ella Fry Family July Knight of the Month: Sir Knight David L Hawes Past Grand Knight July 9, 2017 New Officer Installation: Grand Knight: Sir Knight Gregg Randall Deputy Grand Knight: Sir Knight Brian Clements Chancellor: Sir Knight Gary Dvoracek Financial Secretary: Sir Knight Jeff Reiter Treasurer: Sir Knight Mike Bruha Recorder: Brother Knight Jerry Glentz Lecturer: Brother Knight Mike Paoli Advocate: Brother Knight Daniel Nelson Warden: Sir Knight Matt Englerth Trustee-3: Sir Knight David Hawes Trustee-2: Sir Knight Patrick Barlow Trustee-1: Sir Knight Joe La Mere Inside Guard: Brother Knight Greg Corcoran Outside Guard: Sir Knight John Stubler The SEAS Father John Rossiter Council wishes to THANK the past Officers for their unselfishness and dedication to our Council and our Parish Community during their tenure. 3 FAITH FORMATION Let Your Light Shine There are so many things to love about the summer months- green grass underfoot, birds singing, piles of flip flops at the door, family bike rides and crackling campfires under starry nights. Family road trips, vacations and camps provide new and fun opportunities to experience excitement and memories that last a lifetime. Summer is also a great time to add volunteering to your family to do list and make special memories and connections you only get when you share your light with others. DO WHAT YOU LOVE When you find ways to connect your talents and interests with organizations doing good work in your community, you stay engaged and excited to lend a hand. Do you like to cook? Donate your skills to prepare meals at a soup kitchen. Enjoy running or exercising? Volunteer for Special Olympics. Explore the websites of respected organizations such as Catholic Charities, Catholic Relief Services and The United Way to find opportunities in your community for you (and your family) to give back. (Carlson, Constance. Let Your Light Shine Take Out. Summer pg 6. Print) BAPTISM CLASSES Congratulations on becoming parents! The next scheduled Baptism classes will be Monday, August 7 and Tuesday, August 8 at 6:30 pm. You are expected to participate in both sessions. Parents, these sessions are opportunities for you to enrich, strengthen and deepen your Catholic Faith the Faith you are asking to have your child brought into at the celebration of their baptism. Preparing adequate materials for these classes requires pre-registration. Call the parish office to sign up. Registration forms can be found online at: seasholmen.org THANK YOU To my St. Elizabeth Parish Family in memory of my wife, Patty Stetzer, who was a long-time member of St. Elizabeth s. Patty died June 14, 2017 with her family by her side, after a short and courageous battle with leukemia. Patty was very special to so many people. She was a leader and decision maker and was cheerful and cared about everyone. Patty was a great wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, friend and human being who will be missed by all those who loved her. Her life was well lived for the short time she was with us. Thank you for your support of prayers, food and love during Patty s illness. Your donations in honor of Patty s memory touched me deeply. These donations are being used to beautify the landscaping in front of church. Thank you for your generosity and thoughtfulness. May God bless all of you. Thank you for your loving support at this difficult time, Randy Stetzer and family WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Please help us welcome the newly registered parishioners to our parish: Katy Durkin John & Rachel Manier PARISH INCOME (FISCAL YEAR 7/1/17 6/30/18 Last Week s Collections Weekly Budget Difference Annual Budget Envelopes/Plate.$6,933 $10,594 -$3,661 $550,888 Fiscal Year-to-Date $40,127 $31,782 $8,345 16th Sunday in 3 July 23, 2017
4 PARISH ANNOUNCEMENT Consistent with the diocesan procedure for using the money in our building fund account for capital projects, other than the building of a new church, this is a formal announcement that funds will be requested from this account to cover the following capital project: Replacement of the roof at a cost of $35, The roof on the SEAS church is seventeen years old and is the second roof on the church. The existing roof suffered a water leak about four years ago over the office area of the building and presently has numerous holes from nail-pops over the entire roof along with shingles that have no grit along corners. As a result the SEAS Finance Council has approved its replacement. It is proposed to take the existing roof off and dispose of it, replace roof decking as needed, fill in the two sun holes in the roof on the southwest end of the building and shingle, fill in the notch in the roof over the drive on the north side of the building and shingle, remove the vent for the boiler so that it does not penetrate the roof, and place a new roof with 30 year shingles. To address this work four quotes were obtained from roofing contractors and one quote from a heating contractor to move the vent for the boiler. The roof notch on the north side of the building will be filled in by labor supplied by parishioners while the materials are supplied by SEAS. The low bid of $33, for roof replacement was accepted from Caulum Custom Construction, pending parish approval, along with the $ proposal to move the boiler vent. Finally, it is estimated that it will cost SEAS $ for the materials to fill in the notch in the roof on the north side of the building over the entrance. The final project cost is estimated to be $35, including roof decking needed to replace existing decking that is bad and other unforeseen expenses. It is expected that the roofing contract will be awarded in August and that all work on this project will be completed by winter of Funding for this project will be from project donations with the remainder from our Diocesan Building Fund. If you have questions or concerns regarding this project or this process, please contact one of the Finance Council members shown in the bulletin. Please keep Frank and his family in your prayers. May he rest in peace. Thank you from Deacon Matthew Denise and I would like to express our sincere thanks to Fr. Parr, the parish staff and the parishioners of SEAS for the outpouring of warm appreciation as we move on to the next chapter of our lives. Thank you for your prayers, cards, letters and gifts! I will never be able to adequately express how blessed I have been to serve as deacon at SEAS for the past 10 & 1/2 years. Your love and kindness over the years has given me the courage and strength to follow God's will for my life. Thank you also for your acceptance and trust in my ministry as a deacon. You have allowed me to grow and develop "on the job." Thank you for the second chances after making mistakes along the way and for sharing your joys and struggles. Most importantly, thank you for the joy of gathering together for Eucharist! As I leave SEAS, I pray that we will all continue to glorify God in all things and that the love of Christ and one another will come before all else in our lives. Wishing you the peace of Christ, Deacon Matthew BAPTISMS Today, we welcome, Aven Joseph Woyczik son of Joseph Woyczik & Ashley Christian, and Elizabeth Francis Feilen, daughter of Christopher & Anelin Feilin, to our faith community in the celebration of Baptism. It is now our privilege to help this child grow in faith. We have a great gift of faith to share. WEDDING BANNS III. Rachel Andreska and Michael Valadez We are very pleased and grateful to welcome Carol Reider to our parish staff. Some parishioners have already met Carol when she was with us during her months of internship to fulfill her Masters of Pastoral Ministry degree at St. Catherine University in St. Paul. Carol brings to her ministry many gifts of mind and heart, and a great generosity sharing them. A wife and mother, educator for many years at Western Wisconsin Technical College, and active parishioner at Newman Parish in La Crosse, Carol brings the joy of Gospel living and true desire to serve others in response to the Lord s call. Please be sure to greet her and welcome her to our parish. Welcome Carol! 16th Sunday in 5 July 23, 2017
