Seventh Sunday in February 24, 2019 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED As a small boy I learned that my mother s favorite prayer was the Memorare.

I suspect it was the prayer she prayed quickly after Sunday Mass as her family bolted from the pew. After her death I found a card with the prayer at her bedside and also in her prayer book.

I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother. Though my mother would never have expressed it this way, I know she wanted to be holy. And I know she wanted her family to be holy.

I learned early in life because she told me after every confession to be sure to pray the Memorare. Do the penance the priest gives you, but always pray the Memorare as well. I suspect it was the prayer she prayed quickly after Sunday Mass as her family bolted from the pew. After her death I found a card with the prayer at her bedside and also in her prayer book. It was the Memorare my family had printed on the memorial distributed at her funeral. Mother speaking to Mother. I am sure that is probably why my mother found the prayer so precious. I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother. Though my mother would never have expressed it this way, I know she wanted to be holy. And I know she wanted her family to be holy. It takes a mother to recognize that the mission of a family is for parents, children and grandparents to help each other fall in love with God. It takes a mother to know that love lived in a family brings love to the world. In the family of the home we learn, if we learn at all, what it means to be the family of humankind. I suspect it was God s love, and her desire not only to recognize that love herself but for her husband and sons to do so as well, that made her call upon Mother Mary day in and day out: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. As I once again look to the approaching season of Lent, I trust the Lord won t mind if I follow my mother s instructions and call upon His mother asking to stand before her, sinful and sorrowful, knowing that in her mercy she will hear and answer me. Hear and answer all who walk with her the way of her crucified Son. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr

2 SEAS ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP BOOKLETS Stewardship Kick-Off Weekend It is time once again for each of us to prayerfully renew and recommit our gifts of Time, Talent, and Treasure to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. Today, during each of the Masses, we will listen to a Stewardship Witness talk given by Angie and Isaac Mezera. After Mass, you will be invited to the front of the church to pick up your Stewardship Packet. In the packet, you find a booklet that outlines all the volunteer opportunities we have available in the areas of Worship, Faith Formation Family Life, Social Justice, and Buildings/Grounds. You will also find a form on which to indicate the new ministries you wish to sign up for, the ministries you wish to continue with, and any ministries you wish to discontinue from. In addition, you will find a Stewardship of Treasure card for you to indicate your level of ongoing financial support. We ask you to prayerfully consider your response and then place your forms into the envelope provided and return them to the church at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions, please call the parish office. We need to receive a response back from EVERY registered parishioner. Together, we are St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. FOR YOUR MARRIAGE Praying the Daily Examen from St. Ignatius of Loyola each evening before you go to bed can help you grow as a couple. There are five steps to the Examen. First of all, Pray for Light. Begin by asking God for the grace to pray, to see, and to understand. Second, Give Thanks. Spend a few moments in gratitude for the gifts and blessings of the day. Third, Review the Day. Guided by the Holy Spirit, look back on your day. Pay attention to your experience. Look for God in it. Fourth, Seek Forgiveness. Face up to failures and shortcomings. Ask God s forgiveness for your faults, and ask God to show you ways to improve. Lastly, Resolve to Change. Decide what in your behavior or attitude you will try to improve. Where will you need God tomorrow? SAFE HAVEN SUNDAY Research studies have found that viewing porn decreases a person s ability to become intimate and that it desensitizes you to cruelty. Neither of these are good for you or your family. Learn more about the harms of pornography and how to protect your family on Safe Haven Sunday March 10. PRAYER REQUESTS LAST YEAR S PALMS Blessed palms are a sacramental and should be burned or buried in order to properly dispose of them. This type of disposal honors their sacred purpose and returns them to the earth in a dignified way. You can certainly do this yourself, but if you don t have the ability to burn or bury your palms from last year, you may bring them to church by April 1 st and we will dispose of them for you. Simply place them in the basket provided for this purpose in the gathering place. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Members of the Knights of Columbus will be in the gathering place after Masses on March 2/3 for their membership drive. If you want to know more about their organization, stop by and chat with a member. All men 18 and older are welcome.
