1 Holmen Knights of Columbus Newsletter Volume 16 Issue 3 September 2018 Father John Rossiter Council #9385 Holmen, Wisconsin Chartered July 13, 1986 Vision and Mission For Our Council Our meeting on September 5th was awesome, Tim did a great job in facilitating a process to better understand who we are and what we are looking a doing to help us continue to grow as a council. We will let you know when our next meeting will be to continue the discussion. Q: Why do we exist? Q: How will we succeed? A: To get Catholic men to actively engage in our community and our faith A: Include faith, fellowship, fun into our meetings. Raise money to support our charitable goals Q: How will we behave? A: Welcoming to all, Teach and share our faith, with Integrity, Prayer-full, Supportive Q: What do we do? A: Charitable service events to build fellowship and raise $ for charity. Provide opportunity for faith education and development CHARITY UNITY Q: What is the most import thing now? A:Improving our meetings to be more inclusive and incorporate more faith education Q: Who will do what? A:To be continued at our next meeting FRATERNITY PATRIOTISM

2 Grand Knight s Report Brother Knights: As I write my article for this month s newsletter, I think about all that is happening in the Catholic Church and the impact it has on our faith. As hard as it is to hear about the priest scandal, we need to keep our faith in our beloved Lord. Times like this is when we Brother Knights and families need to stand up and protect our faith; by going to Mass, praying for God s goodness to prevail, fasting, and making ourselves right by going to confession. Remember to let Our Lord Jesus Christ into your heart to help lead you and your family through this difficult time. Today is when the greatest Saints will be made! August was a very busy month, however, it was a wonderful kind of busy! We completed our two Charity Fundraisers which were the Kornfest Fun Run and our annual Breakfast. We netted out $7,500; $6,500 was from the Fun Run and $1,200 from our Breakfast. I would like to thank the many people who stepped up to help organize these 2 events, specifically, Gary Dvorcek and Joe La Mere with the Fun Run and Dave Hawes from the Breakfast. I can t thank enough the many people who helped out with both events. Without all of you, the success of these two fundraisers would not have been possible! We thank the many Knights who have already paid their annual membership dues. As of right now after sending our first notice to collect our dues, 96 of the 147 members have paid. This means we still need to collect dues from 51 members. The 147 is made up of 30 Life, 10 Honorary Life, and 107 regular members. Below is a chart helping to illustrate this as well. We are looking for a small group to meet to discuss our needs from a technology perspective. This will cover topics like the Website, Newsletter, storing documents, Social Media, Texting, phone calling, and . Please let me know if you are interested at or jnc3daddy@gmail.com. We have a meeting scheduled for Monday September 17 at 7 pm at Pizza Corral. We have heard that many of you have enjoyed the trips to visit our local seminarians. On November 30 we will embarking on another trip to St John Vianney located on the college campus of St. Thomas University in St. Paul MN. We are looking for about 20 members to go. We really need some Brother Knights to step up and help with a few positions (Deputy Grand Knight, Super Bowl Breakfast Coordinator, and Kornfest Breakfast Coordinator). Todd Knudtson is looking for a brother Knight to learn the ropes of making phones calls for events like the Breakfasts, and the Tootsie Roll drive. Both of them were instrumental in ensuring we had enough people for the additional clean up the Knights helped out with after the event, as well as working the event itself. 4 Great turnout for Kornfest Fun Run We had 88 women and 87 men for a grand total of 165 participants! A big thank you goes out to all the runners, walkers, volunteers, sponsors, and God for making this years KC Kornfest Fun Run a huge success! All of the runners times are available on our website.

6 Kornfest Breakfast Recap Thank you to all those that helped out with our very busy weekend of Kornfest. Many hands made the work nearly effortless. I am very grateful to see so many Knights and their families, parishioners, and our very important youth group pitching in to make our 2018 Kornfest Breakfast a success. A very special thank you goes to Len Beranek for providing the sausage links to go with our Biscuits & Gravy. Another thank you goes to Todd Knutson for taking the time to get our volunteers together. We were able to bring in a little over $1, to help with our various programs and causes, so your efforts are very worth all the hard work that goes into this fundraiser and our Kornfest Fun Run. I know everyone has a busy schedule nowadays with work, family, and school events already kicking in this time of year, so we are truly grateful for each and everyone s help and support. At this time, I am going to put in a pitch to ask for someone to take over the Super Bowl Breakfast in 2019 and beyond. Super Bowl Breakfast 2018 was our most successful breakfast yet and I would like to end chairing the event on a high note, after 13 years as either chairman or co-chair. This particular fundraiser proved very successful when it is going towards a special cause, as in the case of the apartment fire victims last winter. If anyone would like to take it on I can provide all the information, timeline, contact info needed to continue. Thank you, David Hawes Breakfast Coordinator Knight Volunteers Are Awesome 2018 Kornfest Fun Run was again another success. Runners & walkers enjoyed a beautiful morning as Holmen kicked off its Saturday Kornfest celebration activities. Thank you to all volunteers who helped Saturday morning. Your help is once again appreciated and always needed. This year s Kornfest Run looks to be one of the most profitable. A group effort of this Council s leaders stepped up to invite many new businesses to be sponsors this year. The future Fun Runs are in great hands as I have started to bow out of the responsibilities that I ve enjoyed for the past almost 20 years with one of the greatest Council Knights Pete Tabor. Big thanks to: Greg Corcoran, Jeff Wershoffen, and Richard Cantlon for being there at 5 am to get the road set up started. Thank you to the finish line rock stars Joyce Popple, Terry Hubert, Joe La Mere, Sara Clements. Of course, can t say enough thanks to Janet and Judy and all the gals who do the back room work of getting all the award recipients in right categories for the award ceremonial. A special note to our Holmen Police Department as they were very helpful as the road construction issues was handled perfectly. September falls during the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. During September, as in all of Ordinary Time (formerly known as Time After Pentecost), the Liturgy does not focus on one particular mystery of Christ, but views the mystery of Christ in all its aspects. We follow the life of Christ through the Gospels, and focus on the teachings and parables of Jesus and what it means for us to be a follower of Christ. During Ordinary Time we can concentrate more on the saints and imitate their holiness as Christ's followers. This month the main liturgical feasts are St. Gregory the Great(September 3), the Birth of Mary (September 8), Holy Name of Mary (September 12), St. John Chrysostom ( September 13), Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14), Our Lady of Sorrows (September 15), St. Robert Bellarmine (September 17), St. Januarius (September 19), St. Andrew Kim and Companions (September 20), St. Matthew (September 21), Sts. Cosmas and Damian (September 26), St. Vincent de Paul(September 27), and Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael (September 29). The feasts of St. Peter Claver (September 9), Sts. Cornelius and Cyprian(September 16), St. Pio (September 23) and St. Jerome (September 30) are superseded by the Sunday liturgy.

Sportsmens Knight Out District 25 is putting on the KC Sportsmen Knight Out on Saturday September 15. District 25 is composed of many councils including ours. This event is a way for our Council to get to know the other Councils in our district as well as help our local councils. They are a wonderful group of Catholic men! - Saturday September 15 at 9:30 am - 5 volunteers needed to handle Setup - Saturday September 15 at 4:00 pm - 8 volunteers needed to handle various tasks will be delegated out at 4 pm meeting (Serving Food, Raffle Table Ticket collection, Pull Tabs, etc) basically help out with whatever is assigned Clean up will follow event after 9:00 pm (so all Knights in attendance please hang out and help clean up. 9 Summer is a very busy time at our food pantry at St. Elizabeths because of the needs of our many families. Our immediate needs include cereal, breakfast foods, and healthy snack items.
