3 Grand Knights Report. Hello Brother Knights, I know we briefly thought summer was upon us, but nature has other ideas, with the suddenly colder weather and yes, even snow, in some areas! A wonderful thanks to all those who participated in our very, very busy weekend of April We had a very successful Tootsie Roll Drive this year, raising nearly $4,400 for our 3 day effort, an increase over last year!. We thank the many generous people who donated towards this cause. Many thanks goes to Gregg Randall, Mike Bruha, and Todd Knutson for their hard work bringing us together to raise money for those with Intellectual Disabilities. And we thank to Festival and Walmart for allowing us to stand outside their locations for this important fundraiser. Additionally, we had the Between the Bluffs Beer, Wine, and Cheese Fest fundraiser where our group was helping to keep the grounds and vendor areas cleaned up during the event. Thank you to Tom Hundt for getting us involved with this event, especially since our Freedom Fest fundraiser is going away after this year. And further- Thanks also again to Gregg Randall for a very successful State Charity Raffle! Through his many hours of organizing and hard work-we sold nearly 900 tickets (as of last count). Gregg has been involved in many events since his joining the KC s only 2 short years ago, which is why we honored him with Knight of the Year. Great job, Gregg! I would like to very graciously thank Jeff Reiter for coordinating and Emceeing our Annual Appreciation Banquet, which took place on Sunday, April 23rd. He does a great job and I don t know what I d do without his help with this event.. I would like to thank all of our award recipients for their dedication and time towards their stewardship to our parish, organization, their families, and most importantly to the works of God. I was very moved by S. Consolata on how she expressed what being a Knight meant-it really brought home what we stand for- Charity. Among are several recognitions that we give out, we had one additional recognition this year. This year we submitted a KC and Parish Family for the Wisconsin Family of the Year award. There was one family that kept finding their way into nearly every picture we had at nearly every event we did- and for good reason- they ve show such a dedication and passion to our council, our community, and our parish and we wanted to honor that effort. So, the State Knights of Columbus have honored Joe, Kirsten, Peyton, Cameron, and Hennessy La Mere with the La Crosse Diocesan Family of the Year. They will be one of five families honored at the KC State Convention on Saturday, April 29th. A wonderful and well deserved recognition! Thanks to Matt Englerth, Jeff Hammes, and Pat Brueggen for setting up our annual KC/Youth Card Party on April 29th after the 5:00 pm Mass. We ll also be planning to distribute Flags to veterans graves around Memorial Weekend. And I m sure planning is underway for a Roadside Clean-up or two this spring and summer. Another important event I need to touch on is our Nomination and Election of officers. My term as Grand Knight is coming to an end in June and our Deputy Grand Knight has elected to not move on to Grand Knight due to work and family schedules. So we are looking for those worthy Knights willing to take on the roles of Deputy Grand Knight and Grand Knight. We are also looking for a new Treasurer, as Jeff Reiter has offered to take on the Financial Secretary role. Anthony Villare is stepping down as F.S. due to his extreme work load and family commitments. Here s your chance to really make a difference for our council As we make our transition to new officers, I would like to thank Anthony Villare and Jeff Hammes for their time and efforts in their roles and continued efforts in the future. And thanks to Jeff Reiter for his continued support in various roles within our council. As always, thank you all for your generosity and support for all that represents the Knight of Columbus and may we continue to strive to support our community, our faith and our fraternity throughout this 31st year of our council. Your efforts do not go unnoticed by the many groups and individuals that benefit from our hard work. Vivat Jesus! David Hawes, Grand Knight Page 3 MAY 2017

5 COUNCIL #9385 KNIGHT AND FAMILY OF THE MONTH April 2017 Happy Mother s Day Cheryl! Sir Gregg Randall is our April Knight of the Month for his work on the State Charity Raffle. Gregg stepped up to do all the ticket mailing, entry collection and status reporting when the previous chair Danny Miles had to resign due to work commitments and relocation overseas. Well done Sir Gregg! Greg and Roberta Corcoran, along with Caleb, Louis, and Hannah are the April KC Family of the Month. Greg and Bobbi have helped at highway clean-ups, Tomah VA bingo, flagging grave sites for Memorial Day, Tootsie Roll drives, and many other events. We also welcome Caleb as a new Knight. Thank you Greg, Bobbi, and Caleb and the rest of the family for all your generous help! Fathers and sons, parishioners and KC members and Seminarians from St. Thomas University in St. Paul got together for a GUYS NIGHT OUT. Texas Hold em and Euchre, and games of Sorry, Clue and Things were played, refreshments were served, stories were told, friends were made and door prizes and trophies were given out. A good time was had by all. After the games and refreshments the men from St. Thomas led us all in evening prayers. PAGE 5 May 2017

6 FAITHFUL FRIAR S REPORT May 13th marks the 100th Anniversary of the 1st apparition in Fatima. As you recall it was at Fatima that our lady identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary. Our Lady's message was a basic but important one...pray!!!!! If we return to prayer, peace in the world could be accomplished. Our Lady also made a promise to Sister Lucia that she would "assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation for all those who go on the first Saturday of the month, for 5 First Saturdays receive communion, go to confession, pray a rosary and for 15 minutes meditate on the mysteries of the rosary. Thus in all our Lady proclaimed she desires us to be close to her Son.. Quite remarkable when one thinks about it. Pope John Paul the great was very much devoted to Our Lady of Fatima... Hopefully we have not forgotten that on May 13th 1981, an assassins bullet tried to strike him down, but stopped short of hitting his heart. I think it is by no accident that this bullet stopped short and his life was saved. Mary is a powerful intercessor who cares for her children. Let us not forget to honor Our Lady of Fatima in this Hundredth anniversary year. Don't forget to pray the rosary. God Bless, SK Msgr. Steven Kachel FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR S REPORT. There is only one meeting left till we take our Summer break, and for our last meeting we will be having a pot luck dinner that will be held at St Pat s on May 18. At our pot luck get together there will be election of officers, if you are called and asked to serve, please say yes. For my movie fans, I usually do not watch a lot of my DVD s in the Summer. However I will watch a couple of DVDs on June 6 (D Day), such as The Longest Day, Saving Private Ryan, and maybe Is Paris Burning if the weather is not good on that day. Have a good and safe Summer. Happy Easter, Richard Lepsch FN DISTRICT DEPUTY S REPORT: Brother Knights; I hope you all had a very happy and blessed Easter, and it finally looks like spring is here. The Fr. McCaffrey Council 9438 of Middle Ridge/Bangor is the top membership council in the State as of April 1. There are three councils at 250% and they were the first to reach that level. As such they will be recognized on the floor of the State Convention and receive a plaque. It will be presented in front of everyone by SD Guski and our Supreme Rep. Galesville is the La Crosse winner, they are also at 250% but 9438 got there first. Congratulations to both Councils, I know much hard work you put into achieving this. Thanks! Election of Council Officers is to be conducted between May 1 and June 15 and don t forget to submit your Report of Officers Chosen following the election. We have at least 3 Councils that should be able to achieve Star Council, so let s get the necessary steps completed. Your Council s semi-annual audit is due February 15. ` Don t forget Mother s Day, we all owe so very much to our mothers so let s remember them accordingly. God Bless you for all the work you do for the Knights. Bill Jaekel, DD#25 Fellow Sir Knights of Assembly 1195 Our volunteer services in line with our patriotism are required on August 12th at Fort McCoy s Constitution Park. We are assembling a group of you men to assist smooth running of the Toby Keith music concert to aid our troops training at the facility with some fun for them and their families. Would you be able to work a volunteer shift on August 12, 2017? An Appreciation Night for volunteers will be given to all of us who help. Please contact Joe Znidarsich at to sign up soon. SPECIAL THANKS TO FESTIVAL FOODS IN HOLMEN AND WAL-MART IN ONALASKA FOR ALLOWING US TO COLLECT DONATIONS AT THEIR BUSINESSES. THE POPPY, A SYMBOL OF MEMORIAL DAY The wearing of poppies in honor of America s war dead is traditionally done on Memorial Day (not Veterans Day). The origin of the red poppy as a modern-day symbol of this day was actually the idea of an American woman, Miss Moina Michael. In war-torn battlefields, the red field poppy was one of the first plants to grow. Its seeds scattered in the wind and sat dormant in the ground, only germinating when the ground is disturbed as it was by the very brutal fighting during World War 1. The practice of wearing of poppies was further inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields, written in 1915 by Canadian soldier John McCrae. He saw the poppies in burials around his artillery position in Belgium. Today, poppies are both the symbol of loss of life as a symbol of recovery and new life, especially in support of those servicemen who were damaged physically or emotionally. Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL who served in wartime or peacetime and whether they died or survived. Veterans Day is always observed officially on November 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls. HOLMEN KNIGHTS NEWSLETTER MAY 2017 PAGE 7

9 Dear Brother Knights:.. The school year is coming to a close; my last Final is on May 17th. Classes have gone really well and it has been another great semester. Outside of classes, this semester, I had the opportunity over my spring break to go to Chicago and New York City. It was absolutely incredible!! We went all around Manhattan. We saw the Rockefeller Building, St. Patrick s Cathedral, Fulton Sheen s Tomb, Time Square, Central Park, the World Trade Center memorial, and stayed at Cathedral Seminary in Queens. We also had the opportunity to go up to the 102nd floor of the new World Trade Tower. The view was insane. In comparison to Manhattan alone, Chicago is miniscule. We had a fantastic time there. One of the most impressive parts was the World Trade Center Museum Memorial. Words cannot explain the power of that place. Spiritually, this semester has been amazing. As I said before, the Priesthood is becoming more and more a reality in my heart. Though spiritual direction, I have begun to really dig deep into my relationship with the Father in heaven. I have found that in bringing everything to God in the moment, not just the big moments, has allowed me to rely more on our Lord and less on myself. It has been a transition for sure because before coming to seminary, I had been taught by society that the only person that you can trust is yourself, and through high school, that lie only became more apparent. I can say that I was enslaved to myself through my need for control; however, I have found that I really control nothing. Allowing our Lord to take the reins has brought only fruitful experiences in my relationship with God. I pray that those reading this can try to do the same and give over control to the One who knows what is good for you better than you do. As the semester comes to a close, I pray that you continue to give me such amazing support. On April 22nd, I was knighted as a Knight of Columbus to the 4th Degree. I thank you for all of your support. iviva Cristo Ray!
