1 Twenty-third Sunday in September 9, 2018 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED My father was not one for hunting or fishing. Our next door neighbor, Elmer Hoffland, thought every child should learn to fish. So he took me and a friend to Otter Creek. When my friend and I learned that we can either fish or talk but not do both, we knew that our first fishing day was also our last. And it was. But I learned other things from Elmer that stay with me still. I forget what prompted him but once he told me that when someone suggests that wisdom comes with the years, be sure to ask the older person what new thing he had learned recently. Elmer recognized that wisdom is not something that comes with time but rather with study, reflection and desire. The calendar tells us that the year begins on January 1. However the start of the school year seems to signify for some of us the start of the year. Whether you are enrolled in school or not, we are all called to be students. Whatever is true, good and beautiful is of God. The best student regardless of age is the one who find and celebrates what God has thought from the beginning of time. The best school year is the one during which God gives us the joy of discovering by our own wits his intelligence and love. And it is a successful school year when we discover that by ourselves we have not invented anything at all. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr

2 SEAS STEWARDSHIP Throughout Christian history, it has been clear that spirituality is not a spectator activity. Tough decisions and persistent effort are required of those who seek lives that are whole and holy. If we are to grow in faithful living, we need to learn the practice of saying no to that which crowds God out and yes to a way of life that makes space for God. Our time is limited and valuable and full of essential commitments. It is crucial that we spend time in prayer and discernment as we strive to decide how to make the best use of our gifts and talents when it comes to stewardship. There are times when we are nudged by the Holy Spirit and we are called upon for certain tasks. There are other seasons of life when our involvement in outside tasks must be put aside so our focus can be on our families or even on ourselves. We cannot get so lost in doing that our being becomes distraught and without peace. Every so often, we should reflect honestly on what we are doing.and for what reasons to make sure we truly are doing God s work. VOTIVE/VIGIL CANDLES In the sanctuary next to the tabernacle, you will notice that we have a set of vigil/votive candles. These candles are available for our parishioners to light at any time. Lighting a candle is a way of extending one's prayer and showing solidarity with the person on whose behalf the prayer is offered. Candles may be lit for loved ones who have died, in gratitude, supplication, or for any other intention. There is a suggested donation of $3.00 to offset the cost of the candle that can be left in the basket next to the candles. Pray without ceasing. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 ELIZABETH MINISTRY We will have another gathering of women interested in becoming volunteers for our new Elizabeth Ministry on Thursday, September 27 th at 6:30 pm in the gathering place at church. Elizabeth Ministry is an outreach program for women to affirm, support, encourage, and assist other women in response to their needs during their childbearing years. We welcome volunteers of all ages who have had experiences with infertility, pregnancy, pregnancy loss, birth, adoption, or infant crisis. Thank you FOR YOUR MARRIAGE Spirituality and Faith in Your Marriage Being people of faith is essential to your marriage. It is beneficial to have faith principles to guide you and a faith community to encourage your commitment. You can help your marriage stay healthy by praying together before meals and again before you fall asleep each night. Make attending Mass together a priority each weekend. Include religious traditions in your holiday celebrations. Support each other s involvement in church ministries and activities. Have conversations about God and faith. By including God in your daily lives, you will strengthen your marriage, deepen your relationship with God, and help transform the world. 3 CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU! Pat Brueggen, Director of Faith Formation, has been named this year s recipient of the Diocesan Catechist of the Year Award. The award is given to those people who serve the church in our diocese with great devotion, generosity and Gospel faith. Our parish is richly blessed by his Gospel witness and his love for Christ and his people. We are especially grateful for his untiring care and concern for the young people of our parish and the diocese. We thank the Lord for Pat and his ministry that makes Christ believable to many. Please take this opportunity to express to Pat your appreciation for his service. We pray that the Lord will continue to bless him and his family and prosper his ministry in our midst. FAITH FORMATION Faith Formation classroom assignments will be posted in the gathering space and ed this weekend to the families who have returned registration forms. The Pre-K/ K Sunday school classes will begin once a month on Sunday Sept 9 at 9:15-10 am and are held at the Children's Palace, 520 Amy Dr. Holmen. Classes for grades 1-9 will begin Wednesday evening Sept 12 at 6:30-7:45 pm at the Holmen Middle School. Please have your child bring a folder and pencil to class. Schedules and books will be handed out in class. There will be a registration table in the cafeteria the first two weeks for late registrations. Second grade is a big sacrament year with First Penance and First Communion. If your child 2nd grade or older child has never joined us for class or has yet to make their sacraments, it is never too late. Please contact Mary or Pat in the Faith Formation office if you have questions or concerns. Student pickup in the classrooms at 7:45 GOOD MOURNING MINISTRY The next SEAS Good Mourning Ministry is scheduled for Monday, September 10 at 1:00 Losing one's partner, one's soul mate, one's spouse or a child "demands" the greatest inner strength one can apply, and it requires the help and wisdom of fellow grief travelers. All are welcome to join this or any future gathering. NEXT BAPTISM CLASS The next Baptism Class is scheduled for Monday, October 29 at 6:30pm. To RSVP contact Sister Bridget at the parish office. ALL ARE WELCOME Sesquicentennial Celebration Mass To complete our diocesan Sesquicentennial anniversary, on Sunday, October 7, at 10:30 a.m., Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman. 4 FLOOD RELIEF ASSISTANCE Catholic Charities is available to assist you. Those affected by the recent flooding can call our Disaster Recovery Helpline: or ext Trained staff members will be available to take your information, assess your emergent need and walk you through initial steps toward recovery. They will help set you up with a St. Lawrence staff member who will walk with you through your disaster recovery process. You can also access additional disaster resources by visiting our webpage at: cclse.org/disaster-relief. We meet with both individuals and families to help assess their immediate needs. We provide gift cards to local gas stations, grocery or department stores; helping those in need to replace clothes, food and gas. We look at immediate needs of housing and transportation on a case-by-case basis. We also help develop a long-term recovery plan. Additionally, we assist individuals and families in making connections with government and community resources in order to obtain disaster funding. Disasters happen in a moment and can overwhelm anyone. We are here to help put your lives back together and are available for all those in need. You DO NOT have to face a disaster alone! CAN YOU HELP? The PCCW is looking for a chair or cochairs for the Grocery Cart and Unique Boutique booths for the Christmas Bazaar, which will be held this year on Saturday, November 10 from 8:30am to 1:30pm.
