1 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED Recently I got new shoes. That may not be news for you. But for me, that is a bulletin. If ever I discover a business that lets me hire someone to break in my shoes, I will pay the price. Or perhaps some innovative shoe store will begin to sell shoes already broken in and made for walking. New shoes come out of the box ready to pinch and squeeze as though appearance alone should be enough. After all who buys a car and expects to drive it that day without any problems? Who purchases a new coat and actually intends to wear it home? And who buys new shoes and thinks you can actually walk in them without limping and feeling desperate to get them off your feet? I just bought new shoes but prefer the old ones. Maybe the old pair is a bit worn, even shabby. But soft and easy and comfortable. But then I remember Jesus saying, No one pours old wine into new wineskins. (Mark 2:22) I am reminded that I don t want my faith in him to pinch too much, demand too much, ask too much of me. I want my faith to be like my old shoes: comfortable, an easy fit, broken in by walking the same way for so long. Too often I want Jesus to be like an old shoe and making my way smooth and without any distress. My new shoes throw me off stride. I can t walk as I am accustomed to walking. My new shoes make me think about where I am going and where I need to go. They make me take notice of how I feel wearing them. Before my shoes begin to feel too comfortable, I want to take notice of how I am being challenged by them. Before my new shoes stop hurting me, I want to be reminded of the last time the Gospel hurt me by its call to walk where Jesus walked. Before my new shoes grow old, I want to be reminded that Jesus left me his shoes to fill, and I do want to wear them even when it is a pain to do so. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr
2 FOR YOUR MARRIAGE Learn, Laugh, Let go Because any couple is made up of two distinct individuals, disagreements are guaranteed and provide opportunity for growth as a twosome. Learn and respect one another s opinions, search for common ground, and let go of negative emotions. Grab every opportunity to laugh together. Operate from a position of love To love your partner is to want him/her to feel loved, respected, secure, and cared for. Practice using words in conversation, whether a warm, friendly one or a contentious one, that convey to your spouse that above all, he/she is cherished by you. Vow to share Whether it be worries, insecurities and problems, or fun activities, chores, and responsibilities, share them with one another. Meet daily life as a team; we not me. There s no need to DO everything together, just plan and decide together. Embrace Each Other and Life Embrace one another passionately and frequently. Embrace life from a foundation of faith in God and one another. Even as you face challenges of all kinds, always be grateful for your marriage and for the many blessings in your lives. ~Anita and Jay Dahlby, married 32 years KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Participants and Volunteers Needed! 8/2/2018 Soccer Challenge (Brian ) 8/18/2018 Kornfest Fun Run (Gary , Joe ) 8/19/2018 Kornfest Breakfast (Dave ) Please contact Brian, Gary, Joe, and Dave to help us out! Check out the KC page on the parish website at seasholmen.org SEAS STEWARDSHIP Special Thanks to Our Electronic Givers St. Elizabeth s would like to thank the 80 families who are currently giving electronically. You may not see these fellow parishioners place an envelope in the basket every week, but their consistent giving does not go unnoticed in our parish office. Each month our parish receives a steady and predictable stream of income from those donors who have made the commitment to give to God first by having a designated contribution automatically transferred to our parish through our Electronic Giving Program. If you would like to learn more about this easy, safe and secure way of giving, please contact Sandy in the parish office at or check out our website at seasholmen.org. A sincere thank you to all the volunteers who helped to run the Brat Barn at Festival last weekend. Thanks also to everyone who came out to enjoy the food and help us raise funds for our Food Pantry. Because of all of your generous stewardship, we are able to help feed our brothers and sisters in need. Thank you and God bless. Reminder Please return any donations to Fr. Antony Joseph s Mission Coop as soon as possible. Envelopes were attached to last week s bulletin. If you did not receive one, there are more in the parish office. 3 REMINDER Attention Parishioners Please remember to register your children for the 2018/2019 Youth Faith Formation classes. Registration forms were sent in the mail. If you did not receive one, please contact the parish office. It is important to get these forms in as soon as possible to organize classrooms and check that our textbook/supply list will be adequate. Classes will begin Wednesday, September 12th. Have a safe summer! SEAS YOUTH This week, around 20 of our youth and a few adults from our parish, along with 30 others from around the diocese, will be boarding a bus and heading to Corpus Christi Texas to work on the hurricane relief project. This will be our 7 th mission trip that our parish has participated in. We try to keep watch on different areas of disaster throughout the year and pray to see which area we are called. The mission behind the mission is TRANSFORMATION! Not just of the area we are working, but in ourselves and the people around us. I remind the youth attending that if they are planning on this being a vacation, to rethink about what they are signing up for. When we return home, and think about what just happen over the past few days, we begin to understand we are not in control, but God really is. And if we allow God to take control, you will begin trusting HIM to transform your life. Please pray for our group by holding us up in your daily prayers. Thank you to all of our financial supporters for your generous gifts and prayers. It is truly a blessing to be able to assist these young people as well as the adults in our parish. For more pictures of our summer adventures, please check out St. Elizabeth s Face Book page at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. God bless, Mr. Brueggen PLEASE NOTE CANCELATION The next gathering for the Good Mourning Ministry that was scheduled for Monday, July 2 has been canceled. Please know that all are welcome to pray and reflect on Pope Francis words even if you have not attended previous sessions, there is much to share! NEW LANDSCAPE Please be sure to check out the new landscape in the front of the church in loving memory of Patty Stetzer. Thank you to all who have helped with this project. Thanks be to God that we have had rain and sunshine to help the new plants grow. The next Finance Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 17 at 4:30pm.
