1 Thirtieth Sunday in October 29, 2017 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED As I recall I was in third or fourth grade. I don t remember if I chose the topic or it was assigned by the teacher. But I was writing a report about birds. I am guessing the report had to be several pages long because I was frustrated and angry and discouraged. I had the World Book Encyclopedia in front of me with pictures of birds, lots of birds, and pages of information about birds. Maybe I was discouraged because there was so much known about them (perhaps one lesson the teacher wanted her students to appreciate) or perhaps because there was so much yet to be learned about them (perhaps another lesson the good teacher wanted her students to learn). I was irritable, and the task seemed to be impossible. I was working at the dining room table. My father happened by and gave me advice I remember still. He told me, Bird by bird, John. Bird by bird. Word by word, paragraph by paragraph, bird by bird, that is how reports are completed. And lives are built. This week we celebrate the feast of All Saints. Each saint s life was built day by day, encounter by encounter, discouragement by discouragement, gift by gift. Holy lives are lived piece by piece, slowly, with lots of courage and perseverance and desire. Daily bread is what Jesus tells us to pray for, and daily bread is promised to all. The respected rabbi Abraham Hoeschel says, Be sure that every deed counts, every word has power, and that we all can do our share to redeem the world in spite of all absurdities and all frustrations and all disappointment. Above all, remember to build a life as if it were a work of art. Saints are made by God. But they become saints because they never give up on God and never give up building their lives as God intends, day by day, bird by bird. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr

2 SEAS STEWARDSHIP Christmas Caring and Sharing December 1, 2017, SEAS will be hosting Caring and Sharing. This is an opportunity for stewardship to St. Elizabeth s and the guests of our food pantry. The weekend of Nov. 4/5 members of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Food Pantry committee will distribute empty boxes after Masses for you to pick up, fill up with food items from a list that is attached, and return to church. We are also asking at this time for any donated items in new or like new condition, such as clothing, toys, books, household items, etc. to be dropped off at the parish. Then on Dec. 1, those boxes filled with your generous gifts of food will be handed out to those in need. It is also an opportunity for the guests to shop for the many items donated such as clothing, toys, books, and household items. And lastly, you have the opportunity to be a helper on that day. It takes many volunteers to make this day as special as it can be for our guests. If you have any questions on how you can give to Caring and Sharing by way of donating time, talent or treasure, please contact the parish office. The parishioners of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton have this wonderful opportunity to see God s eyes in the eyes of those in need and to make a difference in someone s day. Thank you in advance for your part in helping fight hunger in our community and for bringing hope and the spirit of Christmas to these families. God Bless you. 3 FAITH FORMATION All Saints Day often becomes lost for many of us with small children in the excitement of Halloween. Though costumes and candy can be a lot of fun, there are ways that Catholic parents can work to highlight this holy feast in the eyes of our children. The Feast of All Saints is about more than remembering the good deeds of those who went before us. In celebrating these unknown saints, we also joyfully celebrate our own call to become Saints, to become holy and beloved of God. As the Feast of All Saints approaches, perhaps your family could spend the month of October learning about the lives of saints. Here are some ideas to help your children get to know the Saints and through the intercession and their witness, become closer to God: -Pick a saint story to read at bedtime and then, later in the week, do an activity connected to the saint, such as gardening with St. Francis or serving at a soup kitchen with St. Vincent de Paul. -Talk about the heroic virtues of the saints and how they used their gifts to serve God. Talk about the special gifts you see in your own children and how they are called to be saints. -Consider encouraging your child to dress as a saint for Halloween, or for All Saints Day. -Add a Litany of Saints to your family prayer. It is also an appropriate time to review Catholic rites and teachings regarding our own death and that of loved ones. What does the church teach about cremation? What if my spouse is not Catholic-can he/she have a Mass of Christian Burial? Must the burial be done the day of the funeral? These and other questions will be discussed at a presentation to be held at the parish beginning at 6:30 PM on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14. Father Parr will discuss the rites of Catholic Burial and the ministry offered by the Church at the time of death. Also we welcome a representative from Dickinson Family Funeral Homes and Crematory who will be with us to answer questions about the professional services provided by funeral directors.
