1 Fourteenth Sunday in July 8, 2018 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED To become a naturalized citizen of the United States, a person must correctly answer 6 out of 10 questions selected at random from 100 questions asked by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. I chose the following 10 at random. Remember you must correctly answer 6 out of the ten. 1. What is the supreme law of the land? 2. What stops one branch of the government from becoming too powerful? 3. Name your U.S. Representative. 4. If both the President and the Vice President can no longer serve, who becomes President? 5. How many justices are on the Supreme Court? 6. What is one responsibility that is only for United States citizens? 7. Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? 8. Name one U.S. territory. 9. Name one American Indian tribe in the United States. 10. The Federalist Papers supported the passage of the U.S. Constitution. Name one of the writers. I trust you to correct your own work. Did you correctly answer 6 of the 10? All ten perhaps? Answers are at the bottom. But remember these are questions we expect new citizens to answer correctly. And of course more is demanded of them than just answers to these or similar questions. Now check your answers. And ask yourself one other: What do you suppose is also asked of new citizens that should be asked of me as well? Oh, and one last thought. At baptism it is good to be reminded that what is asked of the newly baptized is also being asked of you and me. We can take for granted the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. And more easily we can mistakenly assume that being baptized means I am living a baptized life. The Lord be with you. 2 SEAS STEWARDSHIP Stewardship: A Message for All Ages At their November 2007 meeting, the US Catholic Bishops issued a very warm and friendly message to Catholic teenagers entitled, Stewardship and Teenagers: The Challenge of Being a Disciple. That statement included many recommendations that are important not only for our young people but for Catholics of all ages. Here are just a few of the Bishops recommendations: Choose a time every day for prayer, by yourself or perhaps in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Find the time that seems most sacred for you, and take that time to spend alone with God. If possible, attend the Eucharist more than once a week. Trust us! God is always there, waiting to hear from you and wanting you to know of his unconditional love for you. Seize every opportunity to show God s love through your random acts of kindness: an encouraging word, a pat on the back, a helpful hand. Be present to the people in your life, especially your family. Offer to help. Practice saying yes. Seek opportunities to participate in your parish or faith community as a greeter, altar server, lector, extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, or assistant in the religious education department. Decide to give a certain percentage of money to your parish each week. As you live with this decision, you will grow into a lifelong habit of generosity. FOR YOUR MARRIAGE Those who remain in love remain in God and God remains in them. 1 John 4:16 Congratulations to our FIFTEEN couples who are celebrating their 50 th wedding anniversary this year!! This weekend, these 15 couples have been invited to attend a celebration in their honor with Bishop William Callahan, and, as a parish, we wish to extend our own congratulations! It is such a joy and a privilege to experience the wisdom of these couples who have lived through the joys and sorrows of married love. 50 years ago, without fully understanding what they were agreeing to, they answered I Do to their vows to be true to each other in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health and to love and honor each other all the days of their lives. Now, they certainly have a much fuller understanding of the depth and breadth of those words. We thank them for their witness to our community, and we pray for them as they continue on in their journeys as husband and wife. Congratulations to each couple! ATTENTION Calling all children please participate in the Offertory Procession by bringing in food from home to donate to the food pantry or by taking one of the food items from the basket in the back of church. As a stewardship parish, it is important that we live out Jesus call to feed the hungry and it is vital that we teach our children to participate in this ministry. Simply meet in the back of the church when the Offertory song begins. Parents are welcome to accompany their children. Thank you! FROM THE PARISH SECRETARY Facebook challenge The parish secretary, Sandy, is challenging you to take pictures of the different parishes you attend during your summer travels and to post them to our Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Facebook page. What a great way to share with other parishioners some possible future destinations. Many churches are tourist attractions but it would be wonderful to see some off the beaten path churches, or maybe the oldest parish, the new parishes, or even the parish you were baptized or married at. MOVING OUT OF THE AREA SAYING GOOD-BYE IS AS IMPORTANT AS SAYING HELLO! As a parish, we have the opportunity to say hello and welcome to our new parishioners; however, we rarely have the opportunity to say thank you and farewell to those who leave our parish. Saying Good-Bye is difficult but it is so important. As a member of the Faith Community of St Elizabeth s, no parishioner should one day simply just disappear. If you are retiring and moving to a warmer climate, or perhaps downsizing and relocating out-of-town - for whatever reason, please do not just move away and not let us know. We know that St Elizabeth s is not always on the to-do list as one packs and prepares for a move. But we request that you do add the Parish Office to the list so we might properly say God bless you, thank you and good-bye! PARISH COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN No need to sign a commitment form, all parish women age 18 and older are automatically part of the PCCW. Which means you can volunteer as little or as much of your time to the different fundraisers and activities that the PCCW is involved with. Sometimes we are in need of groceries for an event and we may call upon you to donate a pound of butter, or we may need help in the prep work for the event. Please consider becoming more involved with this group. The friendships you make will last a lifetime. This is a great opportunity to share your time, talent, and treasure with St. Elizabeth s. GOSPEL CHOIR The Coulee Region Gospel Choir Sings It s America in a Two Part Program at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton s on Sunday afternoon July 29 at 3pm. The first half of the program will feature the Hoskins Family, Lydia Campbell on piano, and songs from several small vocal groups. 'It's America' will follow the short intermission." The choir is comprised of 70 singers from 37 area churches. The choir is accompanied by Trina Schlifer on piano, Paul Leithold on guitar, and Julie Bodendein on percussion. Ruth Ann Granum is the Managing Director and Tim Jensen, musical director. Admission is free. A free-will offering will be received to help offset the choir s expenses. ALL PARISHIONERS - HOSPITAL STAYS Because of ever-stricter Federal Privacy Laws and the conversion of medical records to electronic format at the local hospitals, our parish is no longer notified when parishioners are in the hospital. In short, if you do not tell us, we will not know that you are in the hospital. To ensure that you receive a visit from the pastoral staff, kindly notify the parish office before any planned hospitalization. Fr. Parr will be happy to administer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick prior to planned surgeries. PILGRIMAGE Pilgrimage to Italy! Join Frs.
