1 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church 515 N. Main St Holmen, WI THE BANE AND THE BLESSED Twentieth Sunday in August 20, 2017 Msgr. David Kunz and I leave for a week vacation following the Masses this weekend. The tickets for the baseball games (St. Louis and Kansas City) are in the car. The only other real essential is the cell phone in case I need to be reached. As you probably know, I am not one who carries a cell phone except when deemed truly necessary. I am not sure why I dislike cell phones so much. Actually it is a strong dislike I feel when the phones around me are chirping, buzzing, ding-donging merrily. My head tells me the cell phones are truly useful things. I have had times when I have been genuinely grateful to have one at hand. Parish needs, family and friend concerns, roadside emergencies are moments when I so much appreciate having my cell phone with me. But the sum total of conversations I hear around me are about things like where I am at and what I am doing (driving, shopping, working and getting paid while talking, etc,). I hear conversations about what to have for the evening meal, what to do on the weekend, what color to paint the bathroom, gossip about so and so who did such and such (lots of talk about that). And all these conversations are not delivered in a quiet voice. They are shared loudly so all around can benefit by the wisdom and importance and fascination of their lives. All things I really don t want to hear, or care about at all. I think the loss of silence is my main grievance. The most blessed times are those when the chatter stops and we are able to take stock for a while; the times when no one knows where we are, cannot get hold of us, and we are left to ourselves. Perhaps I would not feel so irritated if I could hear the full conversation. But of course with the phone we hear only one half. And that tells me that the person on the phone really doesn t want to be part of the community where he/she is. The person wants to live in a bubble, a cell, someplace other than here and now. I know we all create our own private worlds when we daydream and carry on conversations in our heads. But we aren t talking loudly with someone who is invisible to the world around. Especially I am irritated when the person on the phone feels free to use bad language, cursing and swearing. I want to tell the person, I too live in this world. Perhaps a little less air pollution and more human courtesy? No person is an island, John Donne tells us. The cell phone is supposed to bring the world closer together. But it seems to me that something less desirable may be going on. So I am taking my cell phone with me to Missouri. I probably will bring it back with me. Probably. The Lord be with you. 2 SEAS STEWARDSHIP HUNGER NEVER GOES ON VACATION! I didn t know St. Elizabeth s had a food pantry! That s a statement mentioned quite a few times around Holmen and, yes, we DO have a food pantry here at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. The Holmen Area/St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Food Pantry serves the Greater La Crosse community with a mission of not only to provide cereal, vegetables, tuna, and other food items to those in need but also to go beyond the physical needs of our visiting guests each week. Our goal is a simple one, but a very personal one: TO WEL- COME ALL GUESTS AS IF THEY WERE JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF, WHO COMES TO EACH OF US IN A TIME OF NEED, LOOKING FOR A HELPING HAND AND FOR A LISTENING HEART AND EAR. We are blessed by all our guests presence and need them in our lives as much as they need us. Each Tuesday and Friday morning from 9:00 am until 11:00 am, the food pantry shares whatever food items we have, while focusing on the Corporal Works of Mercy centered on our Faith in the Lord. For I was hungry and you gave me to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me. As mentioned, our mission is to offer comfort where distress is seen, to offer understanding and kindness when a heart is broken and hurt, and to offer prayer for all of the needs presented. HUNGER NEVER GOES ON VACATION, and the hungry are always among us. How can you help? Please watch for your upcoming invitation the last weekend of August. To become more like Christ, we must walk as he did, serving the least of our brothers and sisters as we would like to be served. By accepting an invitation after Mass the weekend of August 26 th and 27 th, you will also be accepting a walk with the Lord. 3 YOUTH FAITH FORMATION Sacred Summertime Some people, in order to discover God, read books. But here's a great book: the very appearance of created things. Look above you! Look below you! Note it; read it. God, whom you want to discover, never wrote that book with ink; instead, he set before your eyes the things that he had made. Can you ask for a louder voice than that? Saint Augustine of Hippo This summer, what are some ways you and your family can read the book of creation? What are some of the everyday sacred moments you already experience? How can you reflect on these experiences as a family and what are some ways you can find God in creation this summer? -Go for long walks, hikes or bike rides as a family, and talk about what you see, smell, hear and feel. -Say your evening prayers outside under the stars. -Create a special garden with your kids that they can be responsible for (perhaps a wildflower garden to attract honey bees ard butterflies). -Take a rain walk on a rainy day (not stormy) and discuss how different everything looks in the rain. -With older kids, you might read and discuss parts of Laudto Si, Pope Francis encyclical On Care for Our Common Home. Personalized pre-filled parish update/registration forms were mailed out to the entire parish in May. Please let us know if you have recently changed any contact or family information and get forms to the parish office as soon as possible. Blank printable forms are available here: We are in need of Catechists, Class Helpers, Hall Monitors and Traffic Patrol volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please mark your intention on the back of the registration form. Tuition is waived for the family if you commit to help out each week. 4 SAVE THE DATE Thérèse: The Story of a Soul, the moving, live production performed by actress Audrey Ahern and directed by Patti Defilippis of Saint Luke Productions, will be presented at Aquinas High School (Campbell Theater) in La Crosse on Wednesday, September 6 at 7:00 pm. The event is sponsored by St. Patrick Parish. In this inspiring one-woman performance, Thérèse speaks directly to the audience, with humor, grace and humility. Her honest, direct spirituality speaks powerfully to our busy culture, with the encouraging message that anyone can become a saint. The program is filled with all the elements of professional theater, runs 65 minutes, and is suitable for all ages. Admission is $10. SEAS Parish Council of Catholic Women are preparing for the annual fall bazaar and they would like to extend a personal invitation to members wanting to join this fun group of women. SAVE THE DATE ROOF REPLACEMENT ENVELOPES By now you should have started receiving the roof replacement envelopes in your monthly envelope packet. You will find one envelope from now until January.
