1 The Second Sunday in January 14, 2018 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED He died years many years ago. But I think of him still, especially when I travel to Eau Claire or I recall my years teaching at Regis High School. Mr. Robert Duren was a long time and much revered teacher at the school. To many people, including myself, he was viewed as Mr. Regis, not just because of his tireless service but especially because of the example of his life. He taught what at the time was called Industrial Arts. I know for a fact students used to take his course not because of a particular interest in woodworking or design, but because they wanted to be around him. Mr. Duren constructed the altar and ambo used for many years by the Benedictine sisters at the Regis Convent. He constructed the altar in the Regis Chapel and used for school Masses. I am sure his handiwork is evident still today throughout the school building. Long ago the school relied on bingo to raise needed funds, especially for music and athletics. Mr. Duren was always there, week after week. Wherever and whenever Regis needed him, he responded generously and graciously. His only reservation was that his wife, Donna, did not have other plans. He received countless awards from Regis and the Eau Claire community. I learned he was named recipient of several combat awards during the war. He was never impressed with awards and plaudits. He was always warm and humble and unadorned. But what I remember vividly about this good man is the response he gave when he was named the first recipient of the Non Sibi (Not for Oneself) Award, the highest accolade offered by Regis High School. He was asked to name his greatest accomplishment. Without a moment of hesitation he replied, Why asking Donna to marry me! Time and again I have been privileged to see the miracle of married love. The sacrament is the saving miracle, not just for husband and wife, but for the world. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr

2 SEAS STEWARDSHIP Stewardship: Supporting the Appeal We, at SEAS, are proud of being a stewardship parish. Stewardship involves the giving of our time, talent, and treasure and our parishioners are known for their extreme generosity in all three areas. We appreciate this greatly and give thanks for the many blessings that this brings to our parish and our community. Currently, one of our needs exists in the area of the Diocesan Annual Appeal. Our target goal this year is $82,615 and through your generous donations we have already received $61,628! We are very happy to have had 211 families participate in helping us achieve our success so far. It is important to remember that we must pay this bill. Whatever money we do not raise toward our goal through the appeal must be paid through our general funds. The appeal supports wonderful causes like Catholic Charities, Catholic education, and the support of the world-wide Church. We ask you to prayerfully consider donating to the appeal if you have not already done so. Thank you and God bless you and your families. DIOCESAN BOOK FOR SALE How many missions did Fr. Goldsmith start before he died in 1890 at the age of 44 (and how many languages did he speak)? How did Fr. Dabrowski outsmart the tavern keepers leading to a case that went before the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 1872? On what date was St. Elizabeth Ann Seton established as a parish? For the answers to these and many, many more fascinating questions, purchase a copy of the Diocese of La Crosse s 150 th Anniversary book available after Sunday Masses or in the parish office for $ It makes for very interesting reading! KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Don't forget that Super Bowl Breakfast will be coming up on Sunday, February 4th. We'll be needing many hands to make it successful. To sign up to help out, contact: David Hawes at dlhawes41@yahoo.com or call We also welcome any parish members who are interested in helping out or those Catholic men interested in knowing what the Knights of Columbus are all about. MAKING A DIFFERENCE The 45th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion (Roe v. Wade, Jan. 22, 1973) will soon be here. We invite you to join with other pro-life members of our community in making a public statement of our belief in the sanctity of human life. This annual signature ad (sponsored by the La Crosse chapter of Wisconsin Right to Life), commemorating all of the precious lives lost to abortion will be in the La Crosse Tribune on Sunday, January 21st. If you would like to be included in this ad, PLEASE PRINT your name on one of the sheets on a clip board in the gathering area. There will be volunteers, with clip boards, collecting names after all Masses this weekend. You may also send an with your name to: jenfisk@charter.net. Any donations to help defray the cost of the ad will be gratefully accepted and may be placed in the designated box in the gathering area or given to a volunteer. Thank you! 3 FAITH FORMATION One of the most compelling pro-life documentaries ever produced, the film 40, explores inspiring stories and deeply personal interviews from some of the most prominent figures in the pro-life movement, including Abby Johnson, Lila Rose, and Fr. Frank Pavone. Their stories will change hearts and make the pro-life movement more determined in the fight to end abortion. As we approach the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision on January 22nd, check out this inspiring film on Formed.org and pray for a culture of life. Go to Formed.org Enter Parish Code TG8FVD Then set up your personal account Every time after that, you will click log in AND USE YOUR AND PASSWORD Go to study on the menu bar and scroll down to special topics to find the documentary 40 Important Faith Formation Dates Wed. SEAS SIMPLE LIVING Next Group Discussion is Sunday, January 14 at 9:15am Please join us the second Sunday of every month from 9:15 to 10:00 a.m. in the gathering place as we continue to discern what we, individually and as a community, are called to do as stewards of creation. Please know that all are welcome to pray and reflect on Pope Francis words even if you have not attended previous sessions. There is much to share!
