3 Grand Knights Report Dear Brothers, As we go thru the Advent Season, it is marked by a spirit of patience, expectation, anticipation, and preparation. The word "Advent" means "coming" or "arrival". The focus of the entire season is celebration of the birth of Jesus. Advent is far more than simply marking a 2017 year old event in history. It is celebrating a truth about God and the revelation of God in Christ: whereby, all of creation might be reconciled to God. This spirit of anticipation is very evident in people during the Christmas Season. This past Friday (December 1st) with our visit to Saint John Vianney Seminary at the University of St. Thomas and Saturday, (December 2nd) at our "Keep Christ in Christmas" program and lighting of the Church Nativity, I watched the participating Brother Knights, their children and families. I saw people just beaming with excitement, a sense of alert, asking many questions while listening carefully to those around them looking for an insight into God in preparation for the celebration of Christmas. I want to thank Brian Clements, Fred Lanzel, Michael Bruha, and Patrick Barlow for accompanying me to meet the Seminarians at St. Thomas. We spent time praying, having dinner, and talking with these awesome gentleman as they journey in their education and development in their spiritual and educational work. May we support and pray for them on this journey as they continue through towards their goals. A thank you goes out to those the families that attended our Keep Christ in Christmas celebration. A special thank you goes out to Father Parr for his beautiful blessing of the Church's nativity set, Gary and Janice Dvoracek for their donations, Kirsten La Mere, and Resa Hawes, and the Barlow Family s help with the program. It was a very nice celebration. We will be looking for your assistance this coming January with our Rotary Lights Work Day (January 5th at 9:00-3:00) and our Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest (January 12th at 6:00 pm at Prairie View Elementary). 4 Deputy Grand Knights Report Brother Knights! December is a very busy month. Many Knights and their families helped Sister Bridget with our annual Caring and Sharing event to help people in need on December 1st. Later that afternoon, a group of Knights joined me in a short pilgrimage to St. John Vianney s seminary to visit our young seminarians as they discern the calling of God. Saturday Father Parr led many of our Parishioners in the annual Lighting and Blessing of our Nativity. Sister Bridget joined us in our annual KC Christmas Party, and we completed the weekend, by lighting the first candle on our Church s Advent Wreath. Wow! How exciting to see so many Knights and their families participating in all of these events in keeping Christ in Christmas. There is much to do in this busy time, but please make sure that Christ is always your focus! Don t let the worries and concerns of this season bring you down. Go to Church, participate in the sacrament of confession, and take a deep breath (and pray) before saying something you will regret. These will help you deal with the stresses which make it difficult for some of us to celebrate Christmas in a joyful way each year. Remember that there are twelve days of Christmas: from Christmas Day (Dec. 25), until Epiphany (or the Feast of the Three Kings). By the time the twelfth day arrives, most of the secular world has forgotten Christmas, but we, as Christians, are still celebrating. Our Christmas tree is probably the last tree to be taken down in our neighborhood each year. The joy of Christmas is to be shared by all; the true joy comes from the birth of Jesus. Celebrate the season with your family and council members in the manner it was intended, by Keeping Christ in Christmas! iviva Cristo Ray! 5 KNIGHT and FAMILY OF THE MONTH for November 2017 Jerry Glentz is our November Knight of the Month. Jerry again ran several highway clean-ups this year and continues to provide computer tech support to our church, as well as serving as the council recorder at meetings. Thank you Jerry for your long-standing service! Larry and Kathy Warzynski. and daughter Marcella are our November Family of the Month. Larry sits on the parish Finance Council and presents quarterly budget updates at Mass. He is a member of St Elizabeth s Huberters and is helping plan the February 2018 Wild Game Feed. Kathy is equally involved on the parish council, a chairperson for the recent parish Christmas Bazaar, and on the board for the Town of Holland making a very busy and involved couple. Your son could be someone s priest. IN MEMORY OF SANDRA BERANEK WHAT DO YOU THINK? Some people think Santa Claus is a woman...i hate to be the one to defy a sacred myth, but I believe he's a she. Think about it. Christmas is a big, organized, warm, fuzzy, nurturing social deal, and I have a tough time believing a guy could possibly pull it all off! For starters, the vast majority of men don't even think about selecting gifts until Christmas Eve. Once at the mall, they always seem surprised to find only Ronco products, socket wrench sets, and mood rings left on the shelves. On this count alone, I'm convinced Santa is a woman. Surely, if he were a man, everyone in the universe would wake up Christmas morning to find a rotating musical Chia Pet under the tree, still in the bag. Another problem for a he-santa would be getting there. First of all, there would be no reindeer because they would all be dead, gutted and strapped to the rear bumper of the sleigh amid wide-eyed, desperate claims that buck season had been extended. Blitzen's rack would already be on the way to the taxidermist. Even if the male Santa DID have reindeer, he'd still have transportation problems because he would inevitably get lost up there in the snow and clouds and then refuse to stop and ask for directions. Other reasons why Santa can't possibly be a man: - Men can't pack a bag. / - Men would rather be dead than caught wearing red velvet. / - Men don't answer their mail. / - Men would refuse to allow their physique to be described even in jest as anything remotely resembling a "bowlful of jelly." - Finally, being responsible for Christmas would require a commitment. (Editor s note this is supposed to be a joke. Please address all PC notes to Jeff.) What would you get if you ate the Christmas decorations? Tinselitis. DECEMBER 2017

6 Life of a Seminarian Last month we talked about the 3rd Pillar of formation which is Intellectual Formation, which includes 1) Language Studies, 2) Degree Programs, and 3) Studies Outside of Seminary. Here in December we will focus on the final of the four Pillars of Formation called Pastoral Formation. Pastoral Formation consists of Pastoral Education and Preaching. Pastoral Formation is the culmination of the rest of the pillars. Each of the previous pillars are vital in preparing each seminarian to work through virtues of pastoral formation. Every year at the seminary, the seminarians will join together and work on the pastoral education including the following ministries: Work in a facility to aid the poor and needy e.g. Soup Kitchen, shelter, St. Vincent de Paul Society, etc. / Visit the handicapped, shut-ins, elderly, sick in the parish / Visit the hospitalized / Work with young adult groups, divorced/remarried Catholics, senior citizen s groups / Transportation of the elderly or handicapped to church functions / Ecumenical outreach Prison ministry College campus ministry / Teach religious education. Now, the preaching side of the Pastoral Formation... During the minor seminarian years, the men are encouraged to give vocation talks on how they received God s call to become a seminarian and participate in the Mass as much as they can. Once in theology (major seminary), they will be assigned to a parish to participate in an internship lead by the pastor of that parish. I hope this information is interesting to you! Members of the Holmen KC s and their families set up the Christmas Nativity Scene at St. Elizabeth's Church, participated in the La Crosse Rotary Lights Parade, held a Light Up For Christ Christmas party, and made a visit to brother Knights/seminarians at St. John Vianney Seminary at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN. It was found by an honest little boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse, she commented, "Hmmm... That's funny. When I lost my bag there was a $20 bill in it. Now there are twenty $1 bills." The boy quickly replied, "That's right, lady. The last time I found a lady's purse, she didn't have any change for a reward." There is no regular council meeting in December due to our annual Light Up For Christ Christmas party. KC Free Throw Contest! Basketball, Basketball, Basketball... It is that time of the year to bring your kids to the annual KC Free Throw Contest. In order for this event to be a success we need to find many sharp shooters. Unfortunately, there is an age limitation, so only boy s and girl s ages of 9-14 can participate. Also, to make this event a success again, I will need some help judging and scoring the sharp shooters. NOTE: WIAA has changed their ruling on Girls\Boys participation. This means all girls and boys ages 9-14 can participate without impacting eligibility to play JV, VR, and Varsity high school programs.
