1 Twenty-sixth Sunday in October 1, 2017 THE BANE AND THE BLESSED During the summer I had several opportunities to attend Shakespeare plays. I am deeply grateful to Father Hilary Thimmesch, OSB for introducing me to Shakespeare during my college years. More than once I remember him being moved to tears as he proclaimed excerpts from one play or another. He was especially moved reading something from King Lear. As he regained his composure, I remember him whispering to himself: Every year it changes, and seems to change me. Great literature is not safe. It is not something we can keep at arm s length. Great writing changes us not on our terms but its terms. Hamlet, Othello, Lear come to meet us where we are and take us to someplace new. If human words have such power over us, it is strange that the Bible often is the book that changes us the least. Perhaps it is partly because of our imagined familiarity. Oh, I have heard this before. I know how it ends. But the Bible is not a book we carry around and read for information about God. The Bible is a book we listen to. And obey. It is God s word that gets us going in a new direction. God doesn t hand out information or explain or give simple answers. God calls. And God sends. God called Moses from a burning bush. It should strike us as at least very strange that we don t see our encounter with the Bible as the same. The Lord be with you. Father John Parr

2 SEAS STEWARDSHIP What is a Minister of Hospitality you ask? You were greeted by them as you entered the church. They welcome and assist God s people at liturgy by greeting and ushering and assisting with the collection. They are why we have had such wonderful comments from new members as to how welcoming St. Elizabeth s is. ROOF REPLACEMENT ENVELOPES Thanks again to all those who have been contributing in the monthly blue envelopes for the roof replacement campaign. You will continue to receive those in your monthly packets until January. Look for construction to begin mid October. With the proceeds from this fundraiser, we are able to send out hand crafted cards on birthdays and special holidays to our homebound parishioners as well as other thinking of you items throughout the year and various other activities. 3 YOUTH FAITH FORMATION October is Rosary Month Life in October can be full of caramel apples, bonfires, cool evening walks with long shadows, and peaceful sleep under a layer of blankets with the windows open. Since October is the month of the Rosary, why not add a decade or an entire Rosary of prayer as a family with Our Mother Mary. Don t expect your children to sit perfectly, pay attention and pray the whole time or every time. If you do, you will end up frustrated and angry and the prayerful atmosphere will be lost. Instead, lead with confidence, continue through the end no matter who is doing what, and stick with the routine. Your children will remember your efforts, know how it s done, and be more likely to make it their own habit later in life. There are mobile rosary apps, pamphlets here in kiosk in the gathering space, or you can download the prayers at osv.com. Important Faith Formation Dates SUN Oct. 1 Wee Believe Pre-K/Kind. If you are in need of this Sacrament, the service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 4 th at 6:30 pm in the Church. To better understand the teachings of the Catholic Church on who is to receive this sacrament, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, CCC states in par. 1514, The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already Arrived. We will be serving refreshments afterwards. If you are interested in attending this service, please contact Mr. Brueggen at Raffle tickets are still available to win the beautiful curio cabinet in the gathering place. All proceeds are going to the roof replacement project. Only 100 tickets will be sold. Tickets are $10.00 each and sold after Masses or inquire at the office. PET BLESSING Celebrate the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi There will be a pet blessing on Wednesday, Oct. 4 from 5:15-5:45pm at the Viterbo University, Assisi Courtyard.. No RSVP necessary. THIS WEEK St. Elizabeth s has an active seniors group for adults 55+ called Young at Heart. Join us on Thursday, Oct. 5th at 8:30 am beginning with Mass followed by potluck, games and a speaker. Lisa Reid, one of our Parishioners, will be our speaker. She will tell us about the proposal to make A Prairie for God s Creatures. This project would take place on a part of our Church property that is presently vacant. This land is located on the Westside of Highway 35. Lisa has worked with the Department of Fish and Wildlife for 31 years and has a great love for God s creatures of the prairie. Please come join us. 4 SEAS GOOD MOURNING MINISTRY Losing one's partner, one's soul mate, one's spouse or a child "demands" the greatest inner strength one can apply, and it requires the help and wisdom of fellow grief travelers. All are welcome to join for any or all of our gatherings. The next meeting is Mon., Oct. 2 at 2:00 pm. SEAS MINISTRY OF COMPASSION Our next gathering of SEAS Ministry of Compassion for those who are facing challenging health issues will be Monday, October 16 at 6:30 pm. We welcome all those who are struggling with health issues as well as their caregivers, families, and friends. Come and join us for sharing, support, and prayer.
