Thus, when John saw Jesus coming toward him, he instantly cried out, Behold, the Lamb of God, John immediately recognizes that Christ is the one for whom his heart has been made. That immediate correspondence between what he has been waiting for all his life and what he beholds in the Lamb of God leads him to testify that he is the Son God. The miracle is that the same grace has been given to us. We are the ones who have been called to be holy with all those who call upon the name of the Lord. By professing the One who takes away the sin of the world, we become a light to the nations through whom God s salvation reaches to the ends of the earth. (at noon: from the Mass of Celebration) for texts, see pew card TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The symbols and actions of baptism evolved around the experience of adults dying to old patterns of life and rising from the waters of baptism as new creations. As for newborn babies, at first it was desired to wait until the following Easter, when they could be baptized, anointed with chrism, and given a taste of the Eucharist in association with adults. The Church was always willing to baptize adults in emergency situations outside the Easter timetable, and in time, since infancy itself was a life threatening situation, the baptism of babies became commonplace. As with the emergency adult baptisms, it was required that parents bring the child, as soon as health was recovered, to the bishop for the full menu of sacraments. The very real fear of death for infants thus created a situation in which the three sacraments drifted apart from each other, and away from their original, adult celebration at Easter. Today, at last, we know a great deal about how our practices evolved. This knowledge is reshaping how we celebrate Easter, how we receive adult faith, and how we structure the faith journey of children. REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD To be a disciple of Jesus Christ means to learn from him. He is the teacher, we the students; he is the master, we his servants. But what is it we are to learn? One important title for Jesus is the Lamb of God who has come to serve by taking away our sin. He serves by leading us to participate in the holiness of God. We are to do the same for others. Jesus came to understand his own calling by reading and praying the book of the prophet Isaiah, especially the four poems found there called the Servant Songs. Today we hear part of the second song in which the servant professes how he was formed as servant from the womb, not only to bring back Israel to God, but to be a light to the nations, so God s salvation may reach to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:6). Those who serve Jesus as disciples are to join in this work of bringing God s salvation to the world. Paul recognizes this in his greeting to the Corinthians, noting his call to be an apostle of Christ and called to be holy. Paul is sent not only to them, but to all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Corinthians 1:2). God s will is our holiness. By responding to the call to know Jesus as the Lamb of God, we accept the invitation to participate in this holiness and become the vehicle for inviting others to dwell there. SAINTS OF THE WEEK Page 4 ST FABIAN (Jan 20) According to the Church historian, Eusebius, St. Fabian was a layman who found himself elected pope when, during the papal election, a dove appeared and rested on his head. In the last years of his papacy, Christians faced widespread persecution and martyrdom. Despite the danger, St Fabian encouraged the clergy to continue to minister, even to those who had renounced their faith in the face of the persecution: If any of those who have fallen into this temptation should become ill and, after doing penance, should desire to receive communion, they should certainly be assisted. Widows, the destitute who cannot support themselves and those who are in prison or have been evicted from their homes should surely have someone to help them. St. Fabian practiced what he preached and was also martyred. Sobering stuff for those of us for whom stewardship sometimes means little more than deciding what portion of our time, talent, and treasure we will return to the Lord! ST SEBASTIAN (Jan 20) In virtually every art gallery everywhere, there is at least one painting of a saint tied to a tree and pierced with half a dozen arrows. That s St. Sebastian! A fifthcentury account of his life and martyrdom says that he was born in Milan to Christian parents and chose the military as a career in order to help and encourage Christians who were arrested during the persecutions. Eventually, he too was sentenced to death for his faith. The story says that Diocletian s archers shot him with many arrows and left him for dead. But, nursed by a Christian widow, he recovered from his wounds and confronted the emperor, denouncing him for his treatment of Christians. Enraged, the emperor then ordered St. Sebastian beaten to death. St. Sebastian, pray for us that we may stand fast with courage when defending our faith seems difficult or dangerous. FRANCIS DE SALES (Jan 24) St. Francis De Sales was a gentle and persuasive preacher who worked tirelessly, first as priest and then as bishop, to re-evangelize the diocese of Geneva, which had become a center of Calvinism during the Protestant Reformation. He also collaborated with St Jane Frances de Chantal (18 Aug) to establish the Sisters of the Visitation. The patron saint of journalists, he wrote numerous pamphlets and countless letters as well as two bestselling books. The Introduction to the Devout Life and A Treatise on the Love of God, which are still widely read today. One of his favorite themes was that all Christians are called to holiness each in his or her own way: I say that devotion must be practiced in different ways by the nobleman and the working man, by the servant and by the prince, by the widow, by the unmarried girl, and by the married woman. But even this distinction is not sufficient; for the practice of devotion must be adapted to the strength, to the occupation, and to the duties of each one in particular. Does the meaning of this passage change if we substitute the word stewardship for devotion?
