1 October 22, 2017 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time SS. ROBERT & WILLIAM CATHOLIC PARISH DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND Theology of the Body Thank you to everyone who has attended Theology of the Body. If you missed any of our talks you can watch the livestream video recording on Facebook or get more details at reclaiming-love. Before the new school year began, every teacher and staff member wrote a letter to the students they will be working with at Ss. Robert and William Catholic School. The letter includes the hopes and dreams each has for the students during the school year. Every week, we will share one of these very special letters. This letter was written by our 1st Grade teacher Mrs. Warneka: Dear Student, We have an amazing opportunity this year! All the time we spend together is going to help you grow into the best you can be. I promise to listen to you and learn from you just as I expect from you. I will give you my love and care and treat you as if you were my own child. You will have my heart. We will have fun and work hard. Sometimes the work will be easy and you will catch on right away. Sometimes the work will challenge you. I ll be there right beside you to help. On the last day of school, you ll look back to what seemed hard and know that you learned and grew. Those things won t be so hard anymore because you persisted and challenged your brain and heart in all the right ways! I can t wait to go on this first grade adventure with you. It is going to be a great year for both of us. 2 FJB s BLOG Dear Parishioners, Today is the feast day of St. John Paul II, a modern day Saint whom most of us can remember. I had the privilege of meeting him in 1998 with a group from the Seminary on our trip to Rome and the Vatican. He talked about the Cleveland Indians with us. A man in touch with the world. My favorite words I heard him say once is do not be afraid He went on to say that with Jesus Christ there is no reason to fear. Those are good words for us to remember in this seemingly violent world we live in today. May St. JPII continue to intercede for us on our journey of life! I wanted to let you know of a new initiative at the 11 am Mass. Over the next few months we are working to "LIVESTREAM" our 11 am Mass. This means it will be videotaped and played back on the internet through Facebook and our parish website. We are doing this for three reasons: Our primary reason is so that those who are homebound, sick or cannot come to the Mass for a legitimate reason can watch and pray Mass with their own parish community. We have noticed that many of our homebound and sick have I Pads, computers and even smartphones. We believe that with some training we will be able to help them know how to watch these. We see this as a tool of evangelization so people who are not Catholic or who have fallen away will be able to watch what we are all about and hopefully want to join us in person. The average Catholic attends his or her home parish 36 Sundays a year because of travel and other obligations. This way they can stay connected with their home parish. Please know that in no way does this fulfill one s obligation to attend Sunday Mass if they are physically able to come and/or are in good health. The video camera will be visible and on a tripod for the next few weeks as we are work with a company to install a camera permanently on the ceiling and will not be visible. The camera will be focused on the Sanctuary, primarily on the priest and ministers. It will capture people receiving Holy Communion from the center aisle. I am just giving you the heads up! I am really excited about this and appreciate all the work Fr. Scott and Nate Raddell are putting into this exciting new project. It will also eventually allow us to Livestream funerals, weddings, baptisms, concerts and lectures. Of course the funerals, weddings and baptisms would only be at the family s request; but many times I have heard from families that many times they have family members who cannot attend, and this way they could be a part of it, albeit virtually. I will be leaving on Monday for two weeks. I am going on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. My friend Fr. Tom Johns, pastor of St. John Vianney Parish, is leading a group of 30 people and asked me to accompany him. I figure this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit the Holy Land and see and pray at the places we read about in the Bible. What makes this trip extra special is that my parents are coming along as well. I look forward to having a glass of wine in Cana where Jesus turned water into wine, to a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, praying at the site of Jesus s birth and crucifixion and all of the other incredibly awesome religious sites. On our way back from Israel, Fr. Johns and I are stopping in Rome to visit a priest friend who is studying over there for a semester. Please be assured that I take with me all the prayers of my parishioners and their family and friends. I know Fr. Scott will take good care of you while I am away. Be gentle with him as this is a busy place and can be a bit much for one priest. I learned that this past summer when he was away 30 days on retreat. Finally, in my blog on October 8 I had the following sentence: If you are divorced but not remarried, cohabitating, or sexually active, you can receive Holy Communion. While I do believe it to be grammatically correct and it to convey what I believe needed to be conveyed, someone suggested to me that it could be misunderstood or misconstrued. After a little prayer and reflection I could see a possible need for clarification. So, let me be VERY CLEAR: If you are divorced but NOT remarried, NOT cohabitating, or NOT sexually active, you can receive Holy Communion. As the blog stated, the proper way to reconcile with Jesus Christ if you are divorced and remarried is through the annulment process and eventual validation of your second marriage. In the case of sexual activity outside of a Sacramental marriage one could receive Holy Communion after resolving to stop the sinful behavior and receiving absolution in the Sacrament of Penance. I do hope if there was any misunderstanding of my words that this makes it clear. And actually these are not my words but the teaching of Jesus Christ through the Scriptures and teaching of the Church. As I also said, please feel free to reach out to Fr. Scott or me with any questions and concerns. Above all, God desires love and mercy and desires to meet you where you are and help bring you to truth and understanding. We are all sinners striving to dispel the darkness of sin and to live in the light of grace! Make it a great week and I will see you when I get back! Peace, Fr. John

3 40 Days For Life Now through November 5th St. Mother Theresa said, the biggest destroyer of peace is abortion. She knew when a country goes against God, they are inviting disaster and we can see the lack of peace in our country today. Only by Prayer and Fasting can we end the Scourge of Abortion! Prayer is also needed to STOP PLANNED PARENTHOOD ABORTION INDUSTRY! Womankind Baby Bottle Collection We will be extending our collection for Womankind Baby Bottles until the weekend of November 25th & 26th. Please pick up a bottle in the vestibule of the Church and fill with your loose change. The change you are putting in your baby bottle for Womankind allows them to offer pregnant women in need free prenatal care and a full range of support services. Keep your marriage fit and trim by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend held at the Wingate Inn, Streetsboro. Some space is still available for the Nov Weekend. More info: OR Website FAITH FORMATION All Souls Mass of Remembrance November 5 at 11:00 am November is the month when Catholics remember, in a special way, their loved ones who have died. These autumn months celebrate the harvest and become an opportunity for us to reflect on the great harvest when God will gather His faithful people into His loving arms. Each of us remembers loved ones who were called home this past year. We give thanks to God that He has blessed us with such wonderful people in our lives. Our parish celebrates a special Mass in November in which we remember the members of our parish who died in the past year and had their funeral Masses or parlor services celebrated by one of our parish priests. Our parish has lost some wonderful people in the last year, but we pray that our loss is heaven s gain. The Mass for the Faithful Departed will be celebrated on Sunday, November 5 at 11:00 am Mass. Please attend this Mass if you are able to do so. We will also have the Book of Remembrance out and ready for you to inscribe the names of your loved ones who have passed away. Have you ever wondered why the priest does what he does during the Mass? Why we respond as we do? Do you understand the meaning behind the parts of the Mass? Here is your opportunity to learn more about the Lord s Supper. In his videobased study, A Biblical Walk Through the Mass, Dr. Edward Sri explores the roots of the words and gestures we experience at Mass and explains their profound significance. In this study you will come to know and understand the Mass as never before, leading you to a richer, more fruitful worship experience. Join us for A Biblical Walk Through the Mass, a 5-week study beginning Wednesday, November 8, through Wednesday, December 6 (no class on 11/22) from 7-8:30 PM in the Upper Hall of the school. Cost of study materials is $20 and is payable by check (made out to Ss. Robert & William) or cash on the first night of class. For more information or to register for the study, contact Linda Shenk at or via lindashenk@yahoo.com. Have you thought of leaving a legacy, especially for our faith, church, and school? Remember Ss. Robert & William in your will or trust to continue our traditions and education. Contact Fr. John at the Parish Office for more information. There will be a Welcome Mass and Reception for Bishop Perez on Wednesday, October 25 at 7pm at Gesu Parish in University Heights. All Catholics of our area are invited to attend.
