2 Welcome to our parish...we are a community founded in a spirit of unity to serve our God through loving HIM and one another, always! Dear Parishioners, FJB s BLOG It is hard to believe that Lent starts this week! It seems we just put the Christmas decorations away. We have lots of great things planned for Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and Pentecost. A Lent newsletter listing all scheduled events has been mailed to all registered parishioners. I encourage you to read it and find ways to make this a great Lent! Lent is a good time to grow in our prayer life, fast from things that might distract us from God, and give alms to help other people. Our annual Fish Fry dinners will be starting soon! The first one is this Friday, March 3. It starts at 4:45 pm. See elsewhere in the bulletin for information and a coupon. I really love the Fish Fries for the sense of community that is present at them. Thank you so much to Jim Granito and Kevin Klocker for all their work in coordinating these. If you would like to help at the Fish Fry, we have many areas needing volunteers (cooking, serving, cleaning, etc.). Please call me at the parish office or send me an if you can help. One of the most important things we can do this Lent is find an opportunity to go to Confession. We will have many opportunities this Lent at the parish. One particular evening I would like to draw your attention to will be Wednesday, March 15. Every parish in the Diocese of Cleveland will be open from 5:00-8:00 pm for Confessions. At least one priest will be available at every parish. Here, both Fr. Scott and I will be available. If you have not been to Confession in a long time this is the night for you. If you know someone (friend, family, neighbor, etc.) who has not been to Confession in a while, please invite them! This night is for them. We do this every year, and it is such an awesome evening of mercy. Just think: in 187 parishes in our Diocese, God s mercy and forgiveness are being poured out through this amazing Sacrament. WOW! It blows me away to think about this. The two biggest objections I hear to going to Confession are: First, Why should I have to tell my sins to a priest? Well, you are not! You are telling them to Jesus Christ himself through the person of the priest. As an ordained priest, at the Sacraments, and Confession is one of them, the priest stands as the visible sign of Jesus at that moment. It will look and sound like the priest but it is Jesus himself very present at that moment. He so wants you to receive this mercy and forgiveness that leads to boundless Grace! Don t miss out! Second is that people feel they do not have any major sins. Maybe not, but we are all sinners. There is no way of avoiding it. It is a good idea to at least annually, if not twice a year, come receive the Graces of Confession. Let this be the Lent where you say YES and receive this special gift from Jesus. Lent is a perfect time to deepen our relationship with Jesus. Consider committing an hour a week in Adoration. Our Perpetual Adoration Chapel has morning, afternoon, and evening hours open. Please call Mike Stanton for further information. Please consider giving just one hour a week to keep a vigil of prayer with Jesus. I guarantee you it will be the best hour of your week! Off the Vestibule of the Church is the Mustard Seed Religious Goods Shop. In assessing the needs of the parish and tracking recent trends in shopping, we have decided to close the Mustard Seed permanently on April 23. Over the years many, many people have done a wonderful job operating this religious goods shop. Many of you have been faithful customers. However, with so many people buying things online and at the religious goods store at Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine it just makes sense for us to suspend this ministry. While the store continued to make a profit, it was just not enough to justify the time and energy. In addition, with space at a premium I think we can use this space for both small meetings and for a Sacristy. We will not be restocking the store any more. All items are now 50% off. Stop in for Lent, Easter, First Communion items, and more! Make it a great week. See you in Church! Peace, Fr. John Lent Fasting Guidelines Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of abstinence from meat and also days of fasting, which limit us to a single full meal and two small meals. The law of fasting binds all Catholics from their 18th birthday until their 59th birthday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years and older.
3 Faith Formation Ss. Robert & William Catholic School Website: Meet Ms. Terese Hurley. She has a Fifth Grade homeroom and teaches Science to students in Grades Here is Ms. Hurley s mission: The mission for my classroom is the teacher and students working together to create an environment that is loving, respectful, stimulating, faith-filled, and which fosters the students growth spiritually, morally, emotionally, behaviorally, and academically. I believe that each child is a unique and special gift, with God given gifts and talents to share. I believe my role as a Catholic educator, in conjunction with the child s parents, is to help each student develop these gifts and talents, as well as their development and growth spiritually, morally, emotionally, behaviorally, and academically. In my classroom each student s gifts will be acknowledged and encouraged by both myself and the student s peers. I believe each child is capable of learning and it is my responsibility to provide a loving, respectful, stimulating, and faith-filled environment that fosters the child s love of God, and love of learning. In my classroom students will be treated with love and respect. Jesus teachings will be central to how individuals treat and speak to each other in this classroom. Classroom meetings will also be held on a monthly basis to foster communication among the students and the teacher. I believe that creating such an environment begins on the first day of school and is reinforced daily in the actions and interactions. Both teacher and student expectations will be communicated and clear examples provided to ensure that a respectful and faith-filled environment is created and continued throughout the school year. I believe, and it has been my experience, that most children will make every effort to meet a teacher s standards when they know that they are loved, cared about, and respected by the teacher. I will make my expectations very clear to the children. Additionally, my words and actions will be chosen to reflect that each student is loved and respected. Thank you for your support of our school. Feel free to join us every Tuesday at 8:00 am for all school Mass. Ss.
