1 December 9, 2018 Second Sunday Of Advent SS. ROBERT & WILLIAM CATHOLIC PARISH DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND Congratulations to Bob & Kathy Perusek, this year s Sr. Dorothy Kazel Alleluia Award honorees! The parish annually recognizes someone with a great Catholic Spirit of service. Bob and Kathy have raised their family of seven children in this parish. Their two grandchildren have been baptized here. Bob has worked at St. William, then Ss. Robert & William since he was a teenager. And while he clocks in and out, he is not compensated for many of his hours of service. Kathy has faithfully served in many ministries as well and recently became a nurse. Her passion is serving the patients in Hospice. These two people love Jesus Christ and show it through their devotion to family and their parish. There is very little that happens in our church building, our Masses, and liturgies that Bob does not orchestrate. He does it with a smile and a desire to be inclusive of everyone. We are very proud of them and thank them for their service. 2 Dear Parishioners, The FJB Blog Happy Second Sunday of Advent! I hope the start of Advent has been good for you and you have begun your spiritual preparation to celebrate the Incarnation, the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. While I suppose the world has always struggled and had very dark times, the social media and 24- hour news channels probably make it appear to be worse than it is. However, times do seem very stressful right now, and daily we are confronted with senseless violence, racial and ethnic discrimination, immorality, the culture of death, and so forth. It is getting harder and harder to be a good, faithful Christian who follows Christ in Joy and Hope. Yet, the Advent season is a time in which we are reminded that God does not abandon his people, but through the birth of the newborn savior, Jesus offers us the gift of Salvation. It reminds us that our HOPE and JOY must be rooted in Jesus Christ. One of the greatest places I find this HOPE and JOY comes from the Holy Hour that Fr. Thom, Fr. Tim, and I do every Monday. As I sit before the Eucharist I am overwhelmed with a sense of peace that leads to HOPE and JOY. As we continue to journey through Advent I encourage you to stop in the Adoration Chapel or the Church and just spend some time with Jesus in the Eucharist. John the Baptist constantly pointed people to Christ, and he continues that same pointing today! Fr. Andy Turner will be here this Sunday, December 9, to celebrate the 9 and 11 am Masses as Fr. Tim and Fr. Thom will be joining me at St. John of the Cross for my installation as pastor. Bishop Perez will install me. As you know, this is in addition to my role as the pastor here. Being the pastor of two parishes certainly has its challenges, but both parishes have great parishioners and great staffs that allow this to happen. It does mean that I am not here as often as I used to be, but know that my heart and love are always here, and I do try to attend as many events as I can. I would encourage you to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. We definitely need more priests. No Bishop wants to close parishes because of lack of priests. While we are blessed here with 3 priests to serve, it is because of the role we take at St. John of the Cross. Many parishes (and some larger than ours) are only served by one priest. I so appreciate all of you great people, and it is awesome to serve with and for you. We do have a seminarian in the seminary from our parish, Tim Raddell. Please keep him in your prayers. He is a freshman at Borromeo Seminary. He will be around for Christmas Masses to serve. I want to draw your attention to our Mass and Confession schedule for Christmas: Mass Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24 Masses are at: 4 pm (Children s Mass), 7 pm, & 10 pm Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25 Masses are at: 9 am & 11 am (THERE IS NO 6 pm Mass) Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Vigil (New Year s), Monday, December 31 Mass is at 4 pm Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (New Year s), Tuesday, January 1 Masses are at: 9 am & 11 am (THERE IS NO 6 pm Mass) Friday, Confessions December 21: 6:30 8:00 pm Saturday, December 22: 10:00 11:00 am 2:30 3:30 pm Sunday, December 23: 12:30 2:00 pm Make it a great week! See you in Church. Peace, Fr. John St. John of the Cross weekday Mass Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, & Friday at 8 am Tuesday & Thursday, 6:30 pm
3 Ss. Robert and William Girl Scout Troops Service Project Socks of Love Please join us for our annual Service Project Socks of Love. Last year, we stuffed a record 330 pairs! These packages are men s or women s socks, stuffed with the mating sock, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, bar soap, razor, shaving cream, or anything needed for personal care. These will be distributed to local homeless shelters in the Greater Cleveland area. Starting now until January 13th, there will be a collection bin at the back of the church as well as in Mrs. Radachy's Room. Any questions, please contact Jamie Zagar at or zagar.jamie@gmail.com. Fulfilled: Uncovering the Biblical Foundations of Catholicism is an apologetic approach to sharing the Catholic Faith using the Old Testament Tabernacle as a blueprint for God s plan. While it is designed as a faith-sharing Scripture study, you will also gain an understanding of some of the most questioned Catholic teachings. Fulfilled will reignite your love of Scripture and help you share and defend the Catholic Faith with the Word of God. Part One focuses on the elements found in the outer sanctuary of the Tabernacle and how they connect to the liturgical calendar, the priesthood, purgatory, baptism, and more. Part Two focuses on the elements found in the inner sanctuary of the Tabernacle and how they connect to the Magisterium, the Eucharist, incense, Mary, and more. This exciting, new 7-week scripture study will be held on Wednesday evenings in the Upper Hall of the school, January 9-February 20, from 7-8:30 PM. Cost for the series is $25. Register by calling Linda Shenk at or ing lindashenk@yahoo.com. Registration deadline is December 21. Ss. Robert and William Catholic School SRW is a No Place For Hate School The No Place for Hate student group sponsored a picture/ essay contest asking students to reflect on What SRW School Would Be Like Without Name-Calling as the topic. Here is the winning submission from the Upper School: The Perfect Day at SRW School It s 7:30 a.m. on Friday, and you re walking up to your classroom. In the gym you were sitting with your classmates, chatting about how it s Friday and you have a science examine today. You get up to your homeroom and everyone is excited for the weekend. You are giving each other high-fives, helping them with their schedules, and just talking about whatever comes to mind. After announcements, it s time to go to your first class: Social Studies. Mr. Williams allows you to sit wherever you want, and you can t decide. You get along so well with everyone it is hard to decide on one seat. Class goes by fast. You played Kahoot and everyone was competing with one another in a fun way. You had a great time in class, and you are hoping for more fun. Now it s time for lunch. You sit down at your table and everyone is talking. It is hard to keep your voice down when everything is going so well. Everybody has been interacting and nobody is getting picked on. At recess, the entire eighth grade is in a big game of 4 Square. Everyone is hoping to get in and make it to king. At the end of recess, you never made it to king, but it s okay. You had a great time with everyone, and you are not even upset. As you are going inside, a few people pat you on the back for your great effort in the game. It s now the end of the day, you are in your homeroom packing up to go home. You can t believe how nice the day went. Everybody was talking and being nice to each other. Nobody had their feeling hurt because nobody was being mean. And then you wake up! That perfect school day where everybody got along did not exist, and you think that it may never. Not everyone would talk to each other in the morning; some would stay secluded with their friend group. If you go to pick seats, you would only sit with your closest friends because they re the only ones you want to talk with. At lunch, you would only sit with the people you are closest with because you don t want to be bullied for talking to someone who are not your closest friends. At recess, the entire grade wouldn t do something altogether. Everybody would be doing their own thing. People would be over-competitive and ruin the fun for you. But it doesn t have to be that way. If we just accepted everybody for who they are; if we didn t judge people for not being like us; if we didn t stay with our closest friends and no one else we wouldn t have this problem. If we didn t bully or call people names, we could have a day just like that. If we put effort into being a No Place for Hate School, we could achieve that perfect day.
