ROBERT & WILLIAM CATHOLIC PARISH DIOCESE OF CLEVELAND Stay Connected Before the new school began, every teacher and staff member wrote a letter to the students they will be working with at Ss. Robert and William Catholic School. The letter includes the hopes and dreams each has for the students during the school year. Every week, we will share one of these very special letters. This letter was written by our 6th grade homeroom and Upper School Science teacher, Mrs. Ellie McClusky: Dear homeroom students, Welcome to room 113. My name is Mrs. McClusky and I can t begin to tell you how excited I am to have you in my class. This year will be packed full of learning adventures that I hope will be both exciting and challenging. Our sixth grade motto is What is your something to GROW about? I expect each and every one of you to try new things, ask for help, never give up, and GROW. Those will be the key ingredients to your success in this class. My mission as a teacher is to motivate, encourage, inspire, and support you by providing a safe, secure, and loving environment for you to GROW socially, emotionally, and academically. It is just like the mission I have as a mother and grandmother. I have two sons, one daughter-in-law, and four grandchildren. I live with my husband and 91 year old mother. You will hear lots of stories about my family. I love to share our adventures with you. In my free time I enjoy any activity that allows me to be near water. I love to swim, sail, and snorkel. But, my favorite activity at the beach is to sit with my feet in the water and read. I would like to know more about each of you! Please write a letter back to me telling me things that you are excited about for this year, what your favorite after-school activities are, your favorite clubs or sports, etc. I would also like to know what you think you will need from me in order to GROW this year. I am looking forward to getting to know you better. 2 The Goodfellow Good News Friends, Teaching in the school a few weeks ago, a student asked me a question I receive very frequently: Why does God let evil happen? I want to help us toward a meaningful answer. We will never make sense out of senselessness, but I do hope we can understand evil in such a way that we won t despair of God s love when we encounter it, which seems to be what most of us are tempted to do. As I explained in the school classroom, God does not create evil. Evil was never part of His design for the world. But if God created everything, then God created evil too, right? Wrong! Evil is not a something. Evil is a nothing, a lack or loss of a something. Evil is like a donut hole: it s a lack of donut! You can t see, touch, or taste a donut hole - you only know the hole exists because of the donut that encircles it. In the same way, God created all beings as good, true, and beautiful. We can only experience evil as the lack or loss of the goodness, truth, or beauty in a part of creation. Remember that precisely in His love for His creatures, God gave all angels and human beings the freedom to reciprocate that love to Him and to one another. That reciprocated love corresponds to the fullness of truth, goodness, and beauty that belong to our nature, created in the image and likeness of God. Where this divine love is not reciprocated, we have evil: a blasted donut hole! All of us in one way or another have not reciprocated divine love, so we bear responsibility for the donut holes of our world. Although evil wasn t part of God s original plan, God has a way back to the beginning by the way forward through the death and resurrection of Christ. Jesus encounters evil throughout His life, and responds with the fullness of love even to His dying breath. This love is re-creative as it fills the emptiness of evil with divine mercy. Voila! What was the emptiness of death, a lack and loss of goodness, truth, and beauty becomes filled with resurrected divine life! So, let s recast our starting question: What does God do with the evil we let happen? He forgives it with merciful love and fills it with divine life. At this very moment, God is opening your mind to see the donut holes in your own life and in our world so that you can listen to Christ who commands you to return curses with blessings. Why? Because love re-creates. St. John of the Cross had this in mind when he said, Where there is no love, put love and you will find love. Love presents itself again where it once was lost. That s the love of Christ at work in the midst of evil! Next Sunday is World Day of the Poor. In preparation, be sure to pick up a prayer & fasting commitment card and an E-Card on prayer & fasting as you leave church today. Commit to praying for the poor and choose a simple fast one day this week to be in solidarity with them. You may even choose to bring in a food donation this week or at our Faith in the City Prayer Service on Tuesday, November 21 in our church. We will arrange for all donations to get to Euclid Hunger Center. May our love for the poor shown through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving fill the cold emptiness of evil with the warm fullness of charity. 4 SPIRITUAL Women s Fellowship The year is winding down. Thanksgiving is upon us. Can Christmas be far behind? Watch this space for information on our very, very special SRW Women s Fellowship Holiday Brunch (please, Lord, no snow storms this year!) to be held on December 9. FAITH FORMATION WWP Keeping in Balance Connect Coffee Talk: Getting a Grip Through Relationships Women struggle to be authentic with one another. We want to be liked and are afraid of revealing who we truly are. Please join us Thursday, November 16th from 7:30-9:00 pm in the Upper Hall for an inspiring video and discussion as we learn how to stop measuring our dignity by comparing ourselves with others or whatever ideal we may hold ourselves up against. No experience necessary, just come as you are for some coffee and to see what Walking with Purpose is all about. Walking with Purpose is a women s Catholic Bible study held on Thursdays from 7:30-9:00 pm in the Upper Hall from October through April. The program aims to bring women to a closer relationship with Christ through personal study and small group discussions each week that link our everyday challenges with the solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church. November is the perfect month to reflect on and give thanks for all God has given us. Come and learn how to pass your story on. Womankind Baby Bottle Collection We will be extending our collection for Womankind Baby Bottles until the weekend of November 25th & 26th. Please pick up a bottle in the vestibule of the Church and fill with your loose change. The change you are putting in your baby bottle for Womankind allows them to offer free prenatal care and a full range of support services to pregnant women in need.
