2 FJB s Blog Dear Parishioners, Happy Thanksgiving weekend! I hope and pray you have had a wonderful holiday with your family and friends. Happy Christ the King Sunday! It is the last Sunday of the Church year, and next Sunday we begin Advent and the new Church year. Advent will bring with it lots of great stuff happening at the parish. This week we will be holding our annual ANGELS appeal to help raise funds for tuition assistance for our parishioners and community members who attend our school. While it is true that many of our students receive the EDChoice voucher from the state of Ohio, over 150 of our children, mostly parishioners, are required to pay tuition. If not for the generosity of parishioners through funds like the ANGELS appeal, a Catholic education would not be possible for them. Last year our appeal generated about $40,000 in tuition assistance to over 100 students. Thank you! This year we will be participating in #WeGiveCatholic with the Diocese of Cleveland. Please read the information elsewhere in the bulletin on how to participate in the #WeGiveCatholic initiative on Giving Tuesday, November 28. In advance, thank you so much for your support of the important work of Catholic education. With Advent and Christmas coming, here are some important events/happenings in the parish: Giving Trees are now up in the Vestibule. We have over 40 families requesting our help with presents and food this Christmas. I have noticed that many times the requests for presents are just basic necessities for life such as clothes and household items. I so appreciate your generosity and support of this project. Please take a tag or two and happy shopping! Sr. Dorothy Kazel was a former teacher at St. Robert School who became a missionary and was martyred doing the Lord s work in El Salvador. I believe her wonderful giving spirit lives on in this year s recipients of the Alleluia Award. The Sr. Dorothy Kazel Alleluia Award will be given this year to Rita Burke and SRW Catholic School Parent Association. Rita Burke is probably one of the sweetest, kindest, and most beautiful women I know both inside and out! She always willingly and joyfully supports any and all of our endeavors. She shows her care for so many parishioners and members of our community. She does all of this quietly and in the background, never allowing the spotlight to shine on her. She is also always willing to try something new in order for a ministry to happen! Our SRW Catholic School Parent Association is under the leadership of great women and men who truly seek to partner with our school staff in order to provide a great family/community atmosphere for our school families. They tirelessly work to raise funds for building improvements and technology. Moreover, and most importantly, they seek to host and facilitate activities that support the family and the school community. We will bestow the award on these recipients at the 9:00 am Mass on Sunday, December 3. Please join us! Our Communal Penance Service will be Monday, December 4 at 6:30 pm in the church. We do this in conjunction with St. John of the Cross parish. This Advent it is our turn to host it. We will have a prayer service and a number of priests available for individual confessions. Mark your calendar to prepare your soul for Christmas. Bishop Perez will visit SRW on Sunday, December 10 for the 11:00 am Mass. We will have a reception after Mass in the gym so that you can greet him and get your picture taken with him. I believe we hit the jackpot of Bishops and are so blessed to have Bishop Perez leading our Diocese. He is so warm, inviting, joy-filled and hope-filled. I can t wait for you all to meet him and for him to meet the best parishioners in the Diocese. So, mark you calendar and plan on attending. On another note, a few people have mentioned to me that they have trouble hearing if they are sitting in the back of the church during Mass. Ironically, some people in the front of the church have told me the sound is too loud. HAHA. Seriously though, the acoustics in the church are the best they can be. For those in the back, if you have trouble hearing, please ask an Usher/Hospitality Minister for a listening device. We have 12 of them. They consist of a little earpiece that goes in your ear, and you can hear everything very well. We also have hearing aid loops that allow you to dial in your hearing aids. Check them out! When I was your age, I always wanted to become a teacher and work with young, bright minds. We are going to spend a lot of time strengthening our academic skills so that you become a super sharp third grader! Most importantly, we will grow in our faith and love in our Lord Jesus Christ. I think it is very important to work together as a classroom family. We will be spending a lot of time together. So it is important to treat each other with respect, kindness, and compassion. I know that each of you has a different brain, which means you think and learn differently. It is my job as your teacher to help you grow as a learner, and as a person of good character. It is your job to do your best every day. There may be times when you are confused or frustrated. Please remember we are in this together and I will help you every step of the way. Sister Ann has authored a number of books: Fire in My Heart, Intercession, Pray and Never Lose Heart,Deeper Conversion, and To Be Like Jesus. Her latest work is: More of the Holy Spirit. She is also the author of many booklets on spiritual topics as well as numerous CDs. She can also be heard on 1260 the Rock radio program: Food for the Journey. For the last twenty years Sister Ann has been employed by Renewal Ministries, a Catholic evangelistic organization, based in Ann Arbor, MI. Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2017 Fall Campaign of 40 Days for Life. God blessed the 40 Days for Life Fall Campaign and 641 babies, mothers and families were spared from abortion, including the 1 baby in Cleveland/Painesville. Three more abortion workers were converted and quit their jobs. Cumulatively, over the 10 years of 40 Days for Life, there have been babies lives saved from abortion, 157 converted abortion workers, and 90 abortion facility closures. Praise God! At first we might think of people who are not like us: people who live in slums, people who go to soup kitchens, people who sleep on the streets, people in prisons, mental hospitals, and nursing homes. But the poor can be very close. They can be in our own families, churches or workplaces. Even closer, the poor can be ourselves, who feel unloved, rejected, ignored, or abused. It is precisely when we see and experience poverty - whether far away, close by, or in our own hearts - that we need to become the Church; that is, hold hands as brothers and sisters, confess our own brokenness and need, forgive one another, heal one another's wounds, and gather around the table of Jesus for the breaking of the bread.
