How will we keep the faith and our parish mission going? the Future of St. Bernard S T his coming Tuesday, Feb. 12, will be an important date for the future of St. Bernard s. On that day all parishioners are invited to attend an Open Meeting to offer input as we prepare for a change in pastors this coming June. Leading the meeting will be Msgr. Peter Pflomm, Director of Clergy Personnel. Bishop Robert Brennan will also be in attendance. Fr. Robert Hayden will attend as an area dean and serve as recorder. There will be three areas of focus for the meeting and framed in the form of three questions: What are the strengths of St. Bernard s Parish? What are the areas of need? What qualities and attributes of a new pastor would best suit St. Bernard s Parish? The information that is gathered will then be presented to Bishop Murphy and the Personnel Assignment Board for review. This will assist them in determining the choice of a new pastor. In addition this information will be conveyed to the new pastor upon his arrival. The meeting will take place in the auditorium and will begin at 7:30 P.M. I encourage you to attend not only to voice your own concerns and ideas but to also hear from other parishioners. I also ask you to pray to the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance as we go through this period of transition and prepare for a new chapter in the history of St. Bernard s. Lent Begins The penitential season of Lent will begin this coming week. In this Year of Faith proclaimed by Pope Benedict we have the opportunity in the next six weeks to deepen our faith through the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and good works. On the opposite column we have listed the various services, events, and devotions that might assist you in making this sacred season a time of grace that will lead you to the joy of Easter. 3

7 GIFTED, ENGAGED AND GROWING PASTORAL PLAN Goal 1: To provide opportunities for all parishioners to discover and live their strengths, and thereby engage more parishioners in service to the parish and community Living Your Strengths Adaptability God has gifted Adaptable people with the ability to go with the flow, take things as they come, and discover the future one day at a time! If Adaptability is one of your Strengths, here are some ways to develop your Strength for the glory of God: You like change, so take on short-term, spur-ofthe-moment roles in the community and parish. Let people know that you don t mind being asked for help at the last minute. Don t make plans too far into the future, as you never know what might come up! To grow spiritually, focus on how your faith is lived in each moment of your present experience. What are YOUR God-given gifts and talents? Take the StrengthsFinder and find out! Books with the StrengthsFinder assessment access code are available in the parish office anytime. ($10 donation requested if possible.) JOIN OUR WEB, FACEBOOK AND TWITTER COMMUNITIES! Goal 2 : To motivate and equip engaged parishioners to reach out and invite others to become engaged. Belonging More Deeply YOU VE BEEN PRAYING FOR SOMEONE TO BELONG MORE DEEPLY. WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT? TAKE AN INVITATION BROCHURE. GIVE IT TO SOMEONE YOU CARE ABOUT. INVITE THEM TO JOIN YOU AT MASS OR A PARISH EVENT. KEEP PRAYING AND TRUST THE SPIRIT!! Goal 3: To increase support and recognition of engaged parishioners What Happened at Vatican II? A six-session monthly series celebrating the anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council What changed and what didn t and why? Something old; something new? How has the Council been accepted? 8 Liturgy corner FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 10, 2013 The moment of the fear of God is a moment of awe and humility, when we recognize God s amazing power, love, and grace, and become aware of our human weakness and limitations. It is an honest and inspiring moment of conversion, inviting us into God s holy presence, no matter the distance we find ourselves from it. First Reading: Isaiah sees the splendor and grandeur of God enthroned in heaven, surrounded by choirs of angels singing his praise (the words we sing at the beginning of the Eucharist prayer at every Mass). Isaiah s experience of the holiness of God makes him aware of his own sinfulness as well as that of his people. He and we are purified as a result of our encounter with God. Responsorial Psalm 138: The Israelites believed that their hymns of praise were joined with those of the angels, as is expressed in the first verse of today s Psalm. In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord. Second Reading: Paul handed on what he had first received (1 Corinthians 15:3) from the proclamation of the Apostles and teachers who preceded him. Some of the appearances mentioned are recounted only here. Like Isaiah before him, Paul realized his own unworthiness as a result of his encounter with the Lord. Gospel: This text might be entitled The Call of Peter. Like Isaiah before him, Peter was willing to set aside his own objections to obey the Lord. Like Isaiah and Paul, Peter also became conscious of his own sinfulness through his encounter with the Lord and the miraculous catch of fish. The Lord has his ways of readying those he will send. ASH WEDNESDAY Wednesday, February 13 Fasting during Lent is a practice of intentional interruption of our everyday routine, a practice by which we embody our renewed commitment to grow in relationship with God. By taking less food, we symbolize our utter dependence on God, Source and Author of Life. We acknowledge that despite our own efforts to live safely and comfortably, we are not ultimately in control. For this day, we put aside our own efforts and re-orient ourselves to the true Source of Life, as we begin Lent. First Reading: It is not enough to perform external rituals of repentance unless the heart is pierced by sorrow. All of Israel, even its youngest members, are called to seek mercy from the Lord. Responsorial Psalm 51: Fully aware of sinfulness, the psalmist prays for God s help and for the clean heart, which alone can see God. Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. Second Reading: The Word of God calls out: Be reconciled to God. Now is the favorable time, the right time! Do not fail to receive God s grace. Today is the day of salvation. Gospel: Prayer, fasting, and works of mercy are the traditional acts of Lenten repentance. They are not to be performed for the acclaim of others but rather done in secret, that the heavenly Father may reward us. Sourcebook, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their 18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year. Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory for all who have reached their 14th year. Fridays in Lent are obligatory days of complete abstinence (from meat) for all who have completed their 14th year.

Parish social ministry Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., Follow these top ten tips to reduce your FOODPRINT and food bill! Shop Smart plan meals, use shopping lists and avoid impulse buys. Don t succumb to marketing tricks that lead you to buy more food than you need, particularly perishable items. Buy Funny Fruit many fruits and vegetables are thrown out because their size, shape or color are not right. Buying these perfectly good funny fruit utilizes fruit that might otherwise go to waste. Understand Expiration Dates in the US, sell by and use by dates are not federally regulated and do not indicate safety, except on certain baby foods. Most foods can be safely consumed well after their use-by dates. Zero Down Your Fridge eat food that is already in your fridge before buying more or making something new, which will save time and money. Websites such as hatewaste.com can help you get creative with recipes to use up anything that might go bad soon. Say Freeze and Use Your Freezer frozen foods remain safe indefinitely. Freeze fresh produce and leftovers if you won t have a chance to use them before they go bad. You can also do this with take-out or delivered food, if you know you will not eat it the next day. Request Smaller Portions restaurants will often provide half-portions upon request at reduced prices. Compost composting food scraps can reduce climate impact while also recycling nutrients. Use FIFO (First In-First Out) as a kitchen rule. Check your pantry. Cook and eat first what you brought first. Store newly bought canned goods at the back of the cabinet. Keep older ones in front for easy access. Love Leftovers tonight s leftover chicken roast can be part of tomorrow s sandwich. Diced older bread can become croutons. Be creative. Ask your restaurant to pack up your extras so you can eat them later, or freeze them. Take leftovers from restaurants. Donate nonperishable and unspoiled perish-able food can be donated. Donated food is the mainstay of our pantry! This information is brought to you by THINK~EAT~SAVE REDUCE YOUR FOODPRINT! 10
