Further details on page 12 Clairvaux chronicle Lent Is Upon Us P erhaps the milder weather makes these weeks of January and February seem to fly by, and now we are about to begin the Holy Season of Lent this coming Wednesday. Even though we make this journey of conversion and renewal each year, it always seems to be helpful. Lent gives us the opportunity to get a little more in shape spiritually and maybe even physically! The traditional Lenten practices of fasting, prayer, and works of charity never go out of date; they have been practiced for centuries. But clearly it is up to each of us to determine what that Lenten practice will look like, how it will benefit ourselves spiritually, as well as do good for others. A good question to ask at the start of Lent is where I most need to turn from sin. In other words, what part of my life needs to change even slightly- to prepare me for the great celebration of the Paschal Mystery culminating at Easter. The parish will be offering various helps including our Daily Reflection Booklet, Wednesday Evening Prayer with guest preachers, and the Lenten Mission given by the Redemptorist Fathers in March. I invite you to take advantage of any or all of these opportunities and thus allow the Lord to bring about that change of mind and heart that will make for a very good Lent. Update On Msgr. Graham Several weeks ago I provided an update on the condition of Msgr. Graham at the weekend Masses. I announced that he had moved from Our Lady of Consolation Rehabilitation Center to the St. Pius X Priests Residence in Amityville where he will be residing for the foreseeable future. Having visited Monsignor on several occasions, I found him to be settling in nicely in his new surroundings. He is in the process of bringing some of his vast library over to St. Pius (but not all of it!), decorating his new suite, and enjoying the camaraderie of other senior priests. He uses a walker to get around and has the opportunity to concelebrate Mass each day. The residence is a very comfortable setting with a lovely chapel, dining room, lounge area and accommodations for about 20 priests. There is a staff of people to provide for the needs of the priests, assure their safety, as well as provide medical assistance if needed. The facility is subsidized in part by the collection taken up each September in every parish throughout the diocese. Monsignor Graham appreciates all of your prayers and good wishes. If you wish to write to him his address is: St. Pius X Residence, 565 Albany Ave., Amityville, N.Y

8 Liturgy corner Edited by Father Chris Costigan SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 19, 2011 In today s Gospel we continue to hear Mark s reports about Jesus preaching and healing. Jesus popularity has grown so much that crowds surround him. Jesus says to the paralyzed man Your sins are forgiven. This might strike us as strange, but in Jesus time, illness was thought to be a sign of sinfulness. First Reading: There is something liberating in the word we hear today: remember not the events of the past, the things of long ago consider not. The people of Israel have failed in what they were to be about; they have wearied God rather than praised him. The new thing God is doing is to forget the sins of their past and form them anew. They are to be his own and to proclaim his praise. Second Reading: In Paul s Second Letter to the Corinthians, he speaks of the afflictions he experiences in his ministry of proclaiming the Gospel. In addition, his plans to visit the community had to be cancelled. The Corinthians should not read this as disloyalty or ambivalence on his part. His word, his commitment to them, has always been yes as was Jesus responses to his mission. Paul reiterates that his mission on their behalf is from God. Gospel: Today s Gospel is one example from the New Testament where the relationship between sin and illness is evident. Jesus ability to forgive sin is confirmed by the healing of the paralyzed man. Don t miss the significance of the faith of those who brought the man to Jesus at what heights they went to so that their friend could come into Jesus healing presence. It far exceeds the faith of the Pharisees or even, at times, that of Jesus disciples. Sourcebook 2012 Saints of the Week Tuesday, February 21. Saint Peter Damian ( ) was born into a large Italian family. He entered a Camaldolese Benedictine monastery comprised of hermit monks who followed an austere life of fasting and prayer. After Saint Peter Damian completed his studies he gained a reputation among the hermits as being both a gifted scholar and spiritual guru. Although he lived in a monastery, removed from the world, Saint Peter was a powerful voice of reform in the Church. He was so influential in the Church that Pope Leo XII declared him a doctor of the Church. 8

9 Our Charitable KIDZ got some nice coverage in the Levittown Patch ( see below). You may also view it online at Levittown-ny.patch.com then search for Charitable KIDZ. Good news for Levittown! Volunteers in the News St. Bernard's Charitable KIDZ Hold Annual "Souper Bowl" Proceeds will benefit the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead. By Nicole Murphy February 9, 2012 The wrong done by young teenagers is wellpublicized. What is less publicized is the charitable work that many teens do. Take the Charitable KIDZ. The group, also known as the Young Vincentians of St. Bernard's Church, is made up of children in eighth through 12th grade. The organization, stemming from the much larger St. Vincent de Paul Society, was founded four years ago by Sister Christine Sammons and dedicated parishioners Carol and Ted Blach. Together, the students and adults volunteer to raise money for the less fortunate. "We tell the kids that we have objectives as a group in order to help the community," said Ted, a 25-year resident of Levittown. "It really helps the kids build character. A lot of them start with us to fulfill hours for community service, but they're all still here once their hours are done. They have fun and learn skills they need to go forward in life." This past weekend, the organization collected funds in soup pots at Saturday and Sunday masses for their annual "Souper Bowl". Over the course of five services, the Charitable KIDZ raised more than $2,100 to help feed the homeless at the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead. "Vast amounts of money will be spent on Super Bowl events, including betting online and in various venues," said Father Jerry Ringenback. "The soup pots are a humble reminder of our calling to share something of our treasure with those who appreciate even a bowl of soup." Jamie Bange, a three year veteran with the Charitable KIDZ, finds each experience very rewarding and believes their work wouldn't be possible without the help of the community and St. Bernard's Parish. "I like to help and I like to make other people smile," said Bange, 17. "Our community is really generous and great at helping us raise money." Christina Lownie, 14, is a first year participant with the Charitable KIDZ and feels it is the most productive way she can spend her free time. "I don't really have a lot to do on the weekends and this is a great way to use my time," she explained. "I've made a lot of friends through helping the community and I'm surrounded by good people every time I come here." Lara Oliva has been with the Charitable KIDZ since its inception. She feels that everyone can help out somehow, and to see smiles on the faces of those in need is an amazing feeling. "Being in the Charitable KIDZ has taught me that someone's always there," said Oliva, 15. "It makes me feel really lucky when we see the needy and it makes me feel nice to help them. It's all really rewarding." The generosity from the Charitable KIDZ doesn't stop with football season. Throughout the year, the children host coat drives and visit the local AHRC to work with those developmentally challenged. "Our Charitable KIDZ are good news for Levittown, loving God and their neighbors," said Sammons. "We applaud them for who they are and what they do." 9

10 Parish social ministry Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., St. Vincent de Paul: Many thanks to everyone who has adopted our pantry as a special outreach project. One More Time Special thanks one more time to our Charitable KIDZ, their parents, friends, Carol and Ted Blach, Diana Buchanan for our successful Souper Bowl of Caring on February 4 th and 5 th. We were able to send a check for $2,150 to the Interfaith Nutrition Network, the Mary Brennan Inn, in Hempstead. It costs approximately $1500 to serve one hot nutritious meal to between individuals every weekday, so we have provided about 1¼ meals to the homeless, or very low-income guests who depend on the INN for a good meal. Our Charitable KIDZ hope to keep in contact with the INN and support them in this beautiful ministry of caring. Emily from the INN will be a guest of the KIDZ on Saturday, March 3 rd at 10:00 a.m. in the parish center for anyone who would like to come. Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches Denise and Ellen, two of our young mothers, have a plan to make peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for our pantry and for the INN. They have engaged some of the children in our religious education program, and will make sandwiches once a month. If anyone would like to donate jelly, peanut butter, aluminum foil or gloves, these items may be brought to the pantry and will be designated for this project. A monetary donation will also help purchase bread. We thank Island Harvest for their donation of gloves and packing tins for this project!
