3 Announcements Hymn 466 (red hymnal): Christ, Thou Art the Sure Foundation Thank you! Special thanks to the activity committee and all others who helped with Friday s victory service and the lunch afterwards. It was very much appreciated by the McKenney family and all who attended. Sunday school today Today s account is of Mary s visit to Elizabeth. In the presence of the Son of God growing within Mary s womb, John the Baptist leaped inside Elizabeth s womb. God comes to us in Word and Sacrament, and we, like Mary, offer our praise and worship. Two ways to destroy prayer life This Wednesday s Bible class will look at two dangers which can quickly destroy one s prayer life, and how the Holy Spirit works through the Word to prevent it from happening. Where in the world? You re invited to brush up on your world geography by attending the school geography bee Thursday at 6 p.m. Come early for a light supper beginning at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome! Voters meeting next Sunday The quarterly voters meeting will be held next Sunday after second service. Check your mailbox for the agenda and reports. All voters and those eligible to establish voting membership are encouraged to attend and help carry out the Lord s kingdom work among us. Non-voters, too, are welcome to sit in and observe. We have just such an opportunity before us with the financial needs faced by the family of Pastor Kevin McKenney. If you would like to help, please designate your contribution: Messiah Benevolence Fund. Request for membership Having completed the adult information course, Mr. John Marita has requested communicant membership in Messiah. Baptism Sunday Jesus commissions His Church: Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19). Jesus told Nicodemus: Unless one is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God (Jn. 3:5). By the water and Word of the Sacrament, the Holy Spirit works faith in the heart and gives to the youngest infant forgiveness and eternal life. To encourage parents to bring their children to Jesus in Baptism, we are planning a Baptism Sunday for February 10. There will be only one service (9:30 a.m.). Do you know of children who have not been baptized and who do not have a church home? Invite their parents to contact Pastor Eichstadt for more information about Baptism Sunday and the preparations leading up to it. Game night at Markesan Faith, Markesan, WI, is hosting a game night next Sunday, Jan. 27, beginning at 3 p.m. Volleyball, etc. will be in the gym, board games and cards in the lunch room, and a bonfire outside. Bring your favorite game and food to share. Confession and Absolution: P: Let us come before our holy God, seeking the blessing of His peace through the purifying work of our Savior Jesus Christ. Holy God, merciful Father, C: we confess that we have not followed our Savior as we ought. By what we have done, and by what we have failed to do, we have not honored You in lives of holiness. Purify our hearts, merciful Father, through the presence of Jesus Christ, that we be blessed with the forgiveness He freely offers to us all. Amen. P: Jesus is among us today and speaks the words of life that bring healing to our souls. As His called and ordained servant, I announce His grace to all of you, and in His stead and by His command, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 9 2

4 Prayer: P: Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully grant that as we commit our cares to You, we may trust in the blessing of Your presence and peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. The Lord s Prayer: Hymn 400 (red hymnal): Take My Life and Let It Be Closing prayer: P: Thank You, Lord God, for nourishing our souls on this journey of earthly life with the food of everlasting life in Your holy Word. Strengthen us to leave here and engage the people in our lives with the love poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Use us to bring Your peace into the lives of those who need Your love; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Old Testament lesson: Isaiah 62:1-5.God promises reconciliation and peace with Him to Jews and Gentiles alike. For Zion s sake I will not hold My peace, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a lamp that burns. The Gentiles shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory. You shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD will name. You shall also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. You shall no longer be termed Forsaken, nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a virgin, so shall your sons marry you; and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. Benediction P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Closing hymn: Lord, Help Us Walk Your Servant Way 3 8

5 Offering and hymn verse: 224:1. Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord! Be all Thy graces now outpoured On each believer s mind and heart; Thy fervent love to them impart. Lord, by the brightness of Thy light Thou in the faith dost men unite Of ev ry land and ev ry tongue; This to Thy praise, O Lord, our God, be sung. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Prayer of the Church Pastor: plain type. Cong: underlined, boldface type. Lord God: You have graciously opened our eyes this morning to another day filled with Your gifts for body and soul. We deserve none of them. We come to You with nothing but our failures to live according to Your holy will. Though we know better, we have been led astray to the idols of the world and their false promises. We have looked for security and happiness in temporary earthly pleasures, rather than in You. In Your mercy, forgive us. Thank You for the priceless gift of faith which looks to Jesus as Lord and Savior. His perfect righteousness is our confidence before You. His sacrifice on the cross fills our hearts with peace. It assures us that our guilt is gone, as far as the east is from the west. We praise You, as well, for all the other gifts which Your Holy Spirit has poured out upon us. May we gladly put them to use, not for personal glory and advantage, but to glorify You and Your saving work in hearts. In Your grace, provide all necessary gifts for our daily wellbeing. Grant healing and recovery to the sick, encouragement to the downhearted, comfort for the grieving, and companionship for the lonely. As winter weather settles in, send Your holy angels to keep us and our loved ones safe on the streets and highways. Receive our offerings of faith. Bless their use both in our congregation and in the joint work of the CLC. In the week ahead, in all our work, leisure, and activities, may we see our calling as Your children, Christ s witnesses, and heirs of heaven. In Jesus name. Amen. 7 4

6 Gospel lesson: John 2:1-11.Jesus is able to supply every need. On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, They have no wine. Jesus said to her, Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Whatever He says to you, do it. Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast. And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now! This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. Sermon: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. DON T MISS THE SPIRIT S GIFTS I. Given to all believers. II. Different for all. III. For the good of all. The Apostles Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Hymn 234 (red hymnal): Holy Ghost, with Light Divine 5 6
