Come see the changes during our open house the weekend of September 9-10 immediately following the Masses. Youth Gatherings are broken down by age and grade level. The groups are small and casual, and are always open to new members and visitors. Youth need not be members here to attend, so you can bring a friend with you when you come for gatherings. St Paul Youth Ministry is focused on forming our young people through the study and practice of their faith, to challenge them to embrace the life of the church through prayer, service to our community and social activities. CUB SCOUT RECRUITMENT AT ST. PAUL PARISH Cub Scout Pack 480 is having its Sign-Up Night on Thursday September 15th at 7:00 pm at the Pavilion of St. Paul s Parish. This is Pack 480 s 51st year of serving boys in our area, and is open for any boys in the Kindergarten thru 5th grade. Call Cubmaster Rob Very ( ) for all of the details. PRAYER CHAIN The Prayer Chain is activated every Tuesday evening. If you know someone needing the prayer chain, or if you would like to volunteer your time on the chain, please call either of the leaders listed below: Philomena Lillie or Audrey & Mike Lucotch L O L MEN S RETREAT IN HISTORIC PITTSBURGH LANDMARK St. Paul of the Cross Retreat House was established in the mid 1800 s by the Passionist Community as the first lay retreat center in the United States. It is nestled on the hilltop above the bustling Southside of Pittsburgh. As you can imagine the Passionists have quite a long history of serving the spiritual needs of the people of Pittsburgh and its surrounding communities. During its industrial days many businesses and professional unions (Steelworkers, truckers, bankers etc.) from the region had annual retreat groups here. St. Paul Parish has a Men s Retreat Group that sojourns to Pittsburgh each Fall for a weekend retreat that is specific to the needs of men. There is a specific itinerary having sessions, sacraments and liturgies; but there is no role call or demand for a person to attend any of them. The retreat is what you make of it. The suggested offering is $ for private accommodations, programs and 5 meals; however no one is turned away because they cannot afford it. Offer what you can. Consider joining the group this year and find out what it is all about. Our promoters are Paul Whalen ( ) and Joe Koller ( ), either can help with your reservation or answer any question. HURRICANE HARVEY S DEVASTATION, RESCUES & SHELTERS FIRST RESPONDERS: CATHOLIC CHARITIES USA & AMERICAN RED CROSS Readings & Reflections REFLECTION: GOD S WATCHERS In the ancient world watchmen were extremely important people. They kept communities safe, and were there to alert them to any impending danger or attack. Before locks, alarms, and security systems, watchmen were the protectors, the safety measure. So when the Lord charges Ezekiel as a watchman today, it is a weighty charge. So weighty, we learn that if Ezekiel fails to sound the alarm for those around him and they perish in a state of wickedness, Ezekiel will be held responsible! This profound connection between God s will on earth and in heaven is repeated in today s Gospel, where Jesus instructs us that we are to be the security force, the watchers placed on alert that nowhere in the Body of Christ, the church, will there be any two members of the one Body who are not reconciled. Scripture tells us that Jesus reconciled all things in heaven and on earth through the blood of his cross. But we are given the mission to continue that reconciliation on earth as in heaven through our ceaseless efforts to be, as Paul would write, ambassadors of reconciliation. Let us not get too comfortable thinking that we are responsible only for keeping our own lives from the path of wickedness and disagreement. King We cannot introduce Jesus Christ to others unless we have first been introduced to him ourselves, and this is our purpose with the Priest, Prophet, King Formation Program to provide an introduction to the Lord so that in coming to know Him, people might better introduce Him to others. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, your choice of afternoons from 1:00 to 2:30 or evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 and will begin on September 26 & end on November 7. Cost - $21.00 (scholarships available). Questions NEW FROM THE KNIGHTS The Knights of Columbus is devoted to the support of the Church and dedicated to the five parishes within the boundaries of our Greensburg Council #1480. It has been very active in parish, diocese, family, youth and community activities. To continue its support of the church and to expand its many works of charity, the K of C will be hold an recruitment drive in our parish at the Masses on the Weekend of September 16 & 17. Membership is open to any man aged 18 years or older. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On Good Friday, at the heart of the Triduum, the commemoration of the Lord s Passion is colored by sobriety and decorum, but this Thursday the mystery comes in a luminous celebration of Christ s victory. In its deepest origins, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is the feast of a dedication of a church, since in the year 335 the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was dedicated on September 13, and on the following day the true cross discovered by St. Helena was brought outside to the faithful for veneration. It is a great feast of the Eastern Church, which often marks it by having the whole assembly prostrate themselves on the floor honoring the life-giving cross. At the core of the tradition is the quest of Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, to acquire the cross and the nails of the Crucifixion from the ruins of Jerusalem. When she was satisfied that she had found them, thanks to the healing of a sick man whose body was placed on the cross, she had her son fund the building of the great basilica. The history of the relic is complicated, especially because it was carried off by invading Persians in the year 614 and went missing for fifteen years. Thursday s feast does not celebrate the relic, but rather the lifegiving cross from which salvation flows. The next Natural Family Planning CM-BBT Method INSTRUCTION is scheduled for MONDAY OCTOBER 2, 2017 beginning at 6pm at the Catholic Charities office in Greensburg. Participants are required to attend only ONE session. The instruction, continued support and follow-up are provided by a medically certified CM-BBT Professional. SALT AND LIGHT NOMINATIONS OPEN Nominations for the Communities of Salt & Light Awards are open and will be accepted through Oct. 31. The 20th annual dinner is scheduled for April 19, 2018, at Stratigo s Banquet Centre, North Huntingdon. Honorees are recognized in three categories: humanitarianism, philanthropy and outstanding human service organization. Nominations may be made at the Catholic Charities website, or by calling Heather Rady at REGISTRATION OPEN FOR CATHOLIC-LUTHERAN FINAL EVENT OCT. 28 AT SAINT VINCENT Registration is open for Commemoration of Hope, the final event in From Conflict to Communion: Together in Hope, the theme of the Catholic-Lutheran regional observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The guest speaker will be Dr. John Borelli, special assistant for Catholic Identity and Dialogue to the president of Georgetown University.
