TRASH & TREASURE ANNOUNCEMENT The Trash n Treasure Committee reminds parishioners to keep in mind this year s event as you do your spring cleaning. We do not accept clothing, baby car seats, extra large exercise equipment, encyclopedias, college textbooks, tires, console televisions, stereos, computer equipment (except laptops or flat screens), monitors, cabinet sewing machines, or anything with Freon. Christmas trees will be accepted. This year s sale will take place July with a $5 Bag Sale on July 23. The first day on which donations will be accepted is Monday, June 4, from 8 am 1 pm in the Parish Hall. Items may also be dropped off on Monday evenings from 6-8 pm starting June 4. Donations are not being accepted on Fridays. Volunteers will be needed Monday-Thursday from 8 am 1 pm (starting June 4) until Trash n Treasure weekend. Men, we especially need your strength and expertise; please consider donating some time! Mark your calendar now and see if you can donate some of your time and talent in organizing for this event. 3 Readings & Reflections TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS The origins of today s solemnity lie in thirteenth-century Belgium. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a troubled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimathea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great basilica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Belgium today. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacrifice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Many of our parishioners follow a devotion to Saint Anthony of Padua, and rightly so. St. Anthony was the patron saint of the mission church of Our Lady of Grace Parish where the congregation of St. Paul Parish has its roots. The Novena to St. Anthony will be June 4-13 culminating on the feast day of the saint and with the distribution of St. Anthony Bread, June 13th after Mass. St. Anthony Bread will be provided by Joe Jioio which is his tradition & remembrance. WEDDINGS: Planning your wedding is a monumental task. Because Marriage is a serious step in life and it is a Sacrament, Marriage Preparation is necessary. 4 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OPERATION FRESH EXPRESS The Greensburg Area Society of St. Vincent de Paul is sponsoring an outdoor food distribution for the people of Jeannette. We need volunteers to work outdoors and help us to feed our neighbors. Date: Monday June 4, 2018 Location: MAGEE AVENUE PARKING LOT, JEANNETTE Time: 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM If you can come and help serve our neighbors, please contact Maxine at or call and leave a message. DELAYED CONGRATULATIONS On Sunday May 20th Don & Angel Schaer celebrated 25 years of married life and marked the occasion with renewing the vows they made all those years ago, after the 9:00AM Mass. Present with them were their 3 children Don, Ryan & Natalie as well as members of their extended family. Blessings & wishes for happiness & longevity together. OBLATES MEETINGS AT ST. VINCENT St. Vincent Seminary Brownfield Room 202 will be the meeting location for the Oblates Meeting and the session on Benedictine Spirituality. Donald UPCOMING INSTRUCTION SESSIONS FOR NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING Mary Ann Newhouse, a parishioner here and employee of the Diocese of Greensburg is a certified professional for CM- BBT, a natural family planning method. She provides a onetime training session several times throughout the year. Remaining sessions are: June 18 at 6PM (Monday); July 16 at 6PM (Monday); September 15 at 10AM (Saturday); October 15 at 6PM (Monday); November 12 at 6PM (Monday). This method is extremely reliable when used correctly and consistently and does not rely on medication, devices or surgery. SISTERS OF CHARITY FINE ARTS CAMP The Seton Arts Service Corps of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill will sponsor a fine arts camp for children in grades 2-8, July from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Caritas Christi. APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR CERTIFICATE IN PASTORAL MINISTRY PROGRAM Applications are being accepted for the Certificate in Pastoral Ministry program for classes beginning in late August. The program is a partnership between the Diocese of Greensburg and Seton Hill University designed to meet the educational and formational needs of adults who are committed to the mission of Christ and feel called to serve publicly in the name of the Catholic Church. REGISTRATION OPEN FOR PATHWAYS Registration is open for the session of Pathways, the diocese s long-standing commitment to adult faith formation and nurturing mature discipleship. To register, call , pathways@dioceseofgreensburg.org or visit the Vocations section of US CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS ANNOUNCES RELIGIOUS FREEDOM WEEK Religious Freedom week in the United States will be June beginning with the feast of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher and ending with the Solemnity of Sts. Peter & Paul. Catholics across the United States are encouraged to pray for religious freedom at home and abroad. USCCB Chairman states that Religious freedom allows the space for people of faith to serve others in God s love in ministries like education, adoption and foster care, health care, migration and refugee services. We encourage people of faith to reflect on the importance of religious freedom so that we might have the space to carry out our mission of service and mercy, and we invite everyone to pray for our brothers and sisters who face intense persecution in other parts of the world. In our Parish, Roni Salsa of Bethlehem Christian Families talked to us about the harsh circumstances imposed on families in the Holy Land due to war and persecution. In our own nation we see hints of it when government tries to legislate abortion care as part of any employee healthcare package even when the employers has religious objections to abortion. We need to respond in prayer and action for Religious Freedom to be recognized throughout the world. JUNE 8: BP 20TH ANNIVERSARY GALA The Bethlehem Project s 20 th Anniversary Gala is on Friday, June 8 from 5:30-10 pm at Rizzo s Malabar Inn.
