TRASH & TREASURE ANNOUNCEMENT The Trash n Treasure Committee reminds parishioners to keep in mind this year s event as you do your spring cleaning. We do not accept clothing, baby car seats, extra large exercise equipment, encyclopedias, college textbooks, tires, console televisions, stereos, computer equipment (except laptops or flat screens), monitors, cabinet sewing machines, or anything with Freon. Christmas trees will be accepted. This year s sale will take place July with a $5 Bag Sale on July 23. The first day on which donations will be accepted is Monday, June 4, from 8 am 1 pm in the Parish Hall. Items may also be dropped off on Monday evenings from 6-8 pm starting June 4. Donations are not being accepted on Fridays. Volunteers will be needed Monday-Thursday from 8 am 1 pm (starting June 4) until Trash n Treasure weekend. Men, we especially need your strength and expertise; please consider donating some time! Mark your calendar now and see if you can donate some of your time and talent in organizing for this event. 3 Readings & Reflections ALL ARE SENT Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an eye in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN COLLECTION TO BE TAKEN MAY The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) collection will be taken at Masses May Half of the proceeds from the collection stays in the diocese to support local communications efforts. The other half is sent to the USCCB to support national and international communications projects. Because Marriage is a serious step in life and it is a Sacrament, Marriage Preparation is necessary. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OPERATION FRESH EXPRESS The Greensburg Area Society of St. Vincent de Paul is sponsoring an outdoor food distribution for the people of Jeannette. We need volunteers to work outdoors and help us to feed our neighbors. Date: Monday June 4, 2018 Location: MAGEE AVENUE PARKING LOT, JEANNETTE, PA Time: 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM If you can come and help serve our neighbors, please contact Maxine at pellism@comcast.net or call and leave a message. We need a minimum of 30 volunteers. This is outdoors so dress for the weather. LECTORING FOR MASSES Imagine hundreds of eyes focused on you. You are new to this ministry. Then you do it!!! You read the wrong intention or make an announcement that was really on last week s sheet, but you don t find out til after Mass. You feel bad but you can t rewind time and unmake the mistake. My point is that in spite of good intentions people will make mistakes. Most people don t have hundreds of eyes and ears focused on them as they do it. It takes a lot of nerve to get up in front of people and read/proclaim; especially when they are not your own words. Sometimes the error is mine, sometimes it is theirs. You need to be gentle with them, they are volunteers after all, performing a ministry that only a few step up to do. Talk to me in the office and we ll see if we can offer some type of solution to the problem. If the error was about a Mass Intention for a loved one, giving another Mass for your loved one on a weekday, or sending a Mass request to a retired priest at no cost to you are possible solutions. It is understood that often there is an emotional attachment to a request for a Mass, but please realize that a mistake in an announcement does not minimize your loved one s memory, it is just a mistake.
