2 THANKS FOR ASKING! Yes, you heard right. Father Lawrence was in the hospital but just over night. He had surgery and is now recuperating at home and is gaining his strength back. He gets a little better each day, so you should see him back active in ministry soon! Meantime, keep him in your prayers. St. Paul Youth Ministry Youth (Grades 6-12) High School: 4:30-6:00PM Jr. High: 6:30-8:00PM Youth Ministry Meetings Youth Ministry has wound down for the year, but it will return once Summer is over and the new school year begins in the Fall of Plan to be here with your friends for engaging activities, service projects, NCYC, March for Life, and sessions to expand your faith & knowledge. TRASH & TREASURE ANNOUNCEMENT The Trash n Treasure Committee reminds parishioners to keep in mind this year s event as you do your spring cleaning. We do not accept clothing, baby car seats, extra large exercise equipment, encyclopedias, college textbooks, tires, console televisions, stereos, computer equipment (except laptops or flat screens), monitors, cabinet sewing machines, or anything with Freon. Christmas trees will be accepted. This year s sale will take place July with a $5 Bag Sale on July 23. The first day on which donations will be accepted is Monday, June 4, from 8 am 1 pm in the Parish Hall. Items may also be dropped off on Monday evenings from 6-8 pm starting June 4. Donations are not being accepted on Fridays. Volunteers will be needed Monday-Thursday from 8 am 1 pm (starting June 4) until Trash n Treasure weekend. 3 Readings & Reflections THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. The Trinity is symbolized by the three travelers to the tent of Abraham and Sarah. They are seated at a table blessing a cup of wine, under the oak of Mamre. If you look closely, you will see a sacrificed calf in the chalice, reminding the viewer of the cross. The table, prepared for eating and tilted toward the viewer, is an invitation to the Eucharist. From left to right, each figure is keyed to a person of the Trinity. Like all icons, this image is theology in art. The persons are equal in proportion and dignity, they all carry staffs to symbolize their power, and are shown with golden wings and halos. Today, the best place to see Rublev s work is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, at the heart of the vast Holy Trinity monastery about an hour from Moscow. After decades of persecution, it is now once again a living monastery, a world heritage site, and the spiritual home of Russian Orthodoxy. A Google visit is highly recommended today! Rev. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OPERATION FRESH EXPRESS The Greensburg Area Society of St. Vincent de Paul is sponsoring an outdoor food distribution for the people of Jeannette. We need volunteers to work outdoors and help us to feed our neighbors. UPCOMING INSTRUCTION SESSIONS FOR NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING Mary Ann Newhouse, a parishioner here and employee of the Diocese of Greensburg is a certified professional for CM-BBT, a natural family planning method. She provides a one-time training session several times throughout the year. Remaining sessions are: June 18 at 6PM (Monday); July 16 at 6PM (Monday); September 15 at 10AM (Saturday); October 15 at 6PM (Monday); November 12 at 6PM (Monday). This method is extremely reliable when used correctly and consistently and does not rely on medication, devices or surgery. MAY 28, 2018 US CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS ANNOUNCE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM WEEK Religious Freedom week in the United States will be June beginning with the feast of Sts. Tomas More and John Fisher and ending with the Solemnity of Sts. Peter & Paul. Catholics across the United States are encouraged to pray for religious freedom at home and abroad. USCCB Chairman states that Religious freed allows the space for people of faith to serve others in God s love in ministries like education, adoption and foster care, health care, migration and refugee services. We encourage people of faith to reflect on the importance of religious freedom so tha twe might have the speae to carry out our mission of serve and mercy, and we invite everyone to pray for our brothers and sisters who face intense persecution in other parts of the world. In our Parish, Roni Salsa of Bethlehem Christian Families talked to us about the harsh circumstances imposed on families in the Holy Land due to war and persecution. In our own nation we see hints of it when government tries to legislate abortion care as part of any employee healthcare package even when the employers has religious objections to abortion. We need to respond in prayer and action for Religious Freedom to be recognized throughout the world. BAPTISMS: As your family grows and you prepare for the arrival of your child, remember to plan for his/her Baptism with the Parish Office. Please contact Sue Craig at to plan for the Baptism.
