PRAYER CHAIN The Prayer Chain is activated every Tuesday evening. If you know someone needing the prayer chain, or if you would like to volunteer your time on the chain, please call either of the leaders listed below: Philomena Lillie or Audrey & Mike Lucotch OCTOBER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER Remember what I told you about October. Let me say it again. It is the month we do the October Count. The Diocese of Greensburg requires a physical count of the people who are attending the weekend Masses. Let me be clear, they require us to count how many are in the pews here at St. Paul and each parish within the diocese during the weekends in October. Although it is not the only factor in assessing the life and vibrancy of each church, it is important. So, come fill the seats at St. Paul so the diocese can see how truly vibrant & vital we are. We ll save you a seat!!! WEIGHT WATCHERS AT ST PAUL PARISH Let s face it losing weight is not for sissies! If you ve thought about joining Weight Watchers and just can t decide, please call Sue at the parish office for more information, ext. 14. All are welcome to join Weight Watchers here at St. Paul Parish, every Tuesday at 6:30. Come and checkout a meeting for free to learn more about the program. The cost is $156 for a twelve week session. Next session begins Tuesday, September 19. Priest. Prophet. King We cannot introduce Jesus Christ to others unless we have first been introduced to him ourselves, and this is our purpose with the Priest, Prophet, King Formation Program to provide an introduction to the Lord so that in coming to know Him, people might better introduce Him to others. Classes will be held on Tuesdays, your choice of afternoons from 1:00 to 2:30 or evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 and will begin on September 26 & end on November 7. Cost - $21.00 (scholarships available). As you anticipate the birth of your child, please call or visit the parish office to make arrangements for Baptism. You should contact the office at least two months in advance of the child s birth. Sessions for the parents are required and are designed to reflect on the meaning of the Sacrament of Baptism, to review the ceremony, and to highlight the importance of the family s commitment to practice the Catholic Faith. Hurricane/Flood Assistance: Thanks to the generosity of the Parishioners of St. Paul Parish we were able to collect $6, for Hurricane and Flood Assistance which will be used to help victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. All funds collected will go directly to Catholic Charities USA to help them with the mission of Assistance and Rebuilding these Gulf Coast communities. Financial Report: Enclosed as an insert in the bulletin is a report of the financial status of Saint Paul Church. It provides income and expense figures for the past fiscal year as well as the budget for our current fiscal year. We always appreciate your generous nature and hope that you will continue to be mindful of the increasing financial needs of our parish. Readings & Reflections TODAY S READINGS First Reading Turn to the LORD, who is generous in forgiving (Isaiah 55:6-9). Psalm The Lord is near to all who call upon him (Psalm 145). REFLECTION: CALL UPON THE LORD The very first line of today s first reading summons us to seek the Lord and to call upon God. This sentiment is echoed in the refrain for today s responsorial psalm: The Lord is near to all who call upon him (Psalm 145:18a). Saint Paul is the embodiment of someone who constantly sought the Lord. In the excerpt we read today from his letter to the Philippians, we find Saint Paul toward the end of his life, a life he describes as completely consonant with Christ. He writes, For to me life is Christ (Philippians 1:21). To find out what it means to live life completely in accord with Christ we need look no further than today s Gospel. Like Eucharistic Prayer II, it has no preface of its own, but the presider chooses from a long menu of possible prefaces to become part of the prayer on a particular occasion. Also, like Eucharistic Prayer II it has a way to insert the name of the deceased in Masses for the dead such as funerals and memorials. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal views Eucharistic Prayer III as the best substitute for Eucharistic Prayer I on Sundays and feasts. In practice, this prayer is used very often at Sunday Mass, and its texts are familiar to all members of the assembly. In this prayer, notice that the priest extends his hands over the gifts and calls down the Holy Spirit to change them into the Body and Blood of Christ. This call of the Holy Spirit is called the epiclesis, and Eastern Christians consider it to be the consecration. Latin Christians have long considered the institution narrative to be the consecration. Partly in response to a deep sensitivity to the East, the reformers took care to structure all our new prayers with a strong epiclesis. VISITING THE ELDERLY & SICK We are called to ministries to... care for the widows & orphans. When we respond to that calling it puts us in a position of gaining new insights into the life of a particular person who is not able to live as independently as they once did. It puts us in their homes and momentarily in their circumstances. Sometimes we walk away thinking that they are getting good care and they seem reasonably content with life as it is. Other times you walk away and what you saw, or what you sensed, haunts you throughout the day. It might be an injury, forced isolation from friends, misuse of money or other things that weigh on you. Just like laws for protection of children there are laws for protection of seniors. In Greensburg, we are fortunate to have the Westmoreland County Area Agency on Aging (WCAAA) right here, downtown. They offer support services for both the senior citizens and for the caregivers. If you have concerns or suspicions that an elderly person is not being given adequate care or attention, or is involuntarily isolated from friends and family, or is being victimized in other ways by the person who they trust as a caregiver, then contact WCAAA at to discuss your concerns anonymously. They can help you to decipher your observations and they have the authority to look into your concerns if it meets the definition of abuse or neglect. Don t be afraid to call, you can make it anonymously. WCAAA: Engaged couples planning to be married at St. Paul Parish, one of whom must be an active, registered member of the parish, should contact the Parish Office at least six months in advance of the intended wedding. A date should not be set before this contact to assure that the church is available and that there is time for Pre-marriage formation. Pre-marriage formation is required to prepare for the Sacrament of Matrimony and the serious, life-long commitment that marriage brings. Any questions; call the office. Around the Diocese ROSARY RALLY, FINAL FATIMA FIRST SATURDAY MASS AT CONNARE CENTER OCT. 7 Bishop Malesic will lead the annual Rosary Rally Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. in the chapel at the Bishop Connare Center. The day includes the final First Saturday Mass in observance of the anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima at 9 a.m., followed by adoration and the sacrament of reconciliation. 5 CHURCH TOURS HOLY FAMILY CHURCH, LATROBE Holy Family Parish, Latrobe is offering guided tours of their newly restored church from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm on the following Saturdays: September 30, October 21, November 18 and December 30. Wine & Beer will also be available for purchase. SR. MARY JANET RYAN DIES AT THE AGE OF 99. Seton Hill University and the Sisters of Charity announced the death of Sr. Mary Janet Ryan this weekend. She passed from this life on Friday September 15th. Living in Caritas Christi, on the grounds of the university. Sister Mary Janet was an active volunteer in the Greensburg Community. She was a person who truly connected with people, and who would remember who you were even if there were long absences from being with her. She had been with the Sisters of Charity for 82 years and was looking forward to her 100th birthday next year. Early on she was a Elementary & Secondary Grade Teacher in the Altoona -Johnstown Diocese and later in her career she taught at the collegiate level at Seton Hill University. Her career was so much more than we have space for here. You can bring up her obituary from the TribLive website or at scsh.org if you would like to read more about her life.
