Guest speaker will be Holly Joy McIlwain, a young mother whose story includes cancer survival, difficult family relationships, and being the Assoc. Please note that there is no online registration. NEW BIBLE STUDY BEGINS IN FEBRUARY AT ST. PAUL PARISH Our parish will begin a new Little Rock Bible Study, Women in the New Testament. It will focus on the meaning of discipleship through the lives of women who lived in the first generation Christianity. It is an eight week study beginning the week of February 5 and ending the week of March 26. Sign up weekends are January 14/15 and January 21/22. Cost is $ Questions ALTAR FLOWERS 2017 The Altar Flower Chart has been posted again in the Vestibule. Thank you to those of you who have memorialized loved ones this way. If you have the desire to make this type of memorial and have not done so, there are several spaces left on the chart. Payment for the flowers can be made when you sign up or later on, but not later than 2 weeks before the date you choose for your flowers. The flowers come from Le Jardin, in Greensburg and are always fresh and vibrant for the weekend Masses. The minimum donation for flowers is $ You can supplement that amount if you like. NOTICE FROM GREENSBURG CATHOLIC CEMETERY If you wish to retain your Christmas decorations from your loved ones graves at Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, please remove the decorations by February 15. Teaching our children about charitable giving is difficult. The children's envelope helps parents do just that. To the families that used the children s envelopes in 2016, thank you. Saint Paul Youth Ministry is focused on forming our young people through the study and practice of their faith and to challenge them to embrace the life of the church through prayer, service to our community and social activities. Readings & Reflections TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As soon as Christmas ends, people begin planning for Easter! Originally, the source of our Paschal Triduum was but a single liturgy extending from Saturday sundown to sunrise on Easter Sunday. The two days leading up to the liturgy were days of fast, not only for the elect, but for the church preparing to baptize them. A fifth-century pope explained that the church imitated the apostles, who were in hiding with their grief from the arrest of Jesus, and therefore sacraments, even penance, were forbidden. Inevitably, though, people wanted to come together, and so eventually a Liturgy of the Word developed for Good Friday. This was the first step toward today s shape of the Triduum, and gradually new ideas were embraced, including the veneration of the cross and a simple Communion service. Interestingly, the Word remained central, since we know that in those days the pope did not receive Communion at this liturgy, even though the faithful had that option. In the other churches of Rome, priests and people received Communion under both species. Although the custom of Communion on Good Friday took hold, it did not endure past the Middle Ages. The central liturgies of the year slowly unraveled and disappeared from parish life. Remember that there were no seminaries in those days, and books were a rare luxury. Most priests could only manage to celebrate a simple low Mass, and few parishes could afford the ritual books that would guide a priest through the complex forms. THREE MISSIONS Today we begin with one of the servant songs from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus ministry of service. Isaiah s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be a light to the nations (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus outranks John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John s baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God. Copyright J. S. 4 A TAXING TIDBIT Westmoreland Community Action Agency (WCA) will soon be opening their Tax Preparation Sites. Families are eligible for free tax preparation if the Household/Family Income is less than $54,000/year. 211 (County s Human Service Helpline) will schedule the appointments, or after January 11, you can simply go on line to WCA. Tax assistance sites will be at the WCA sites across the county and at the local Centers for Active Adults. Watch the bulletin for additional details. AAA CAREGIVER SUPPORT MEETINGS The Caregiver Support Meetings that are coordinated through the Area Agency on Aging have moved from the Troutman Building on Main Street, Greensburg, to the McKenna Center for Active Adults at 971 Old Salem Road, Greensburg. The Center is a neighbor to the Greensburg Garden & Civic Center. Meeting dates for the first quarter of the year are: February 8 and March 8, from 1:00PM-3:00PM. 5 Meetings And News Around the Diocese The Melchizedek Project; A Priesthood Discernment Group The Melchizedek Project is a priesthood discernment group for single Catholic males who are 18 years of age or older. Each session involves prayer, discussion based on the book, To Save a Thousand Souls, and food. A free podcast of this book can be found on itunes by searching The Melchizedek Project. The Bible study will meet on Wednesday Mornings from 9:00-10:30 AM and repeat on Wednesday Evenings from 7:00 8:30 PM. All meetings will be at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. We will be examining the second half of the Gospel of Luke and continuing with The Acts of the Apostles.
