HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING! Do you like to sing... maybe in the car on your way to work or when you do your chores around the house? Maybe you sing when that song gets trapped in your head repeating itself all day long. This may be your soul telling you that it needs to sing out. We give praises to our God in a number of ways. Sung praise through psalms and religious songs is one of those ways. When you use your voice to create praise you develop a connection with others doing the same... you become family. Adult Choir here at St. Paul Parish is a long standing, well recognized tradition and ministry. A line from one of their songs goes like this: Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear the music ringing; it finds an echo in my soul; How can I keep from singing. The author recognized the connection of the soul to singing. The phrase also recognizes that over the confusion and stress of life, that song of praise is heard in the mind and soul aching to be heard out loud. Written song, praise and voices merge here on Wednesday evenings at 7:00PM for Choir Rehearsal. Please consider broadening your horizons and let your soul sing out in praise to our God. Come join the ministry and enjoy the fellowship of the Adult Choir. Contact Glenn Buzzard, Director of Music Ministry, at to express your interest in Choir, or see him after Mass. PRAYER CHAIN The Prayer Chain is activated every Tuesday evening. If you know someone needing the prayer chain, or if you would like to volunteer your time on the chain, please call either of the leaders: Philomena Lillie or Audrey & Mike Lucotch Page 2

I have been trying to put together a comprehensive calendar, but no sooner than several hundred copies were made did I learn about another event/presentation that needs announced. But, that is a good thing! So, please add to your individual calendars that Dr. Art Androkites will present a slideshow on the Shroud of Turin, in the Sullivan Room at 6:30PM on February 22. This is believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus Christ, showing and documenting the wounds of His scourging and crucifixion. Call Jim at the Parish Office ( ) to register for this unique presentation. We need to know how many will attend so that we have enough space for everyone. Feel free to bring a friend. If we need a bigger space we can move it to the Parish Hall. Money Matters January 28, 2018 Weekly Budget $8, Weekly Collection $9, Weekly +/- +$ Annual +/- + $10, Envelopes Used 267 JANUARY 27-28: SECOND COLLECTION, LOCAL CHARIITES for the Poor & Needy in our midst; $1, was collected. Thank you for your generosity. FEBRUARY 3-4, 2018: ANNUAL COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE Every year our Diocese participates in the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe on the first Sunday of February. This year, the collection is to be taken at all parish Saturday evening Masses and Sunday Masses on February 3 and February 4. The Church in Central and Eastern Europe is in need of assistance to rebuild after more than 70 years of Soviet rule and oppression. Of course, this assistance is not limited to the Church only, as the social structures in Central and Eastern Europe also need to be strengthened, as poverty continues to be rampant. The people of these nations, already taking the initiative to restore and to build their Church and towns, need our help. We are called to continue to offer hope to our fellow Catholics, by providing both material and spiritual assistance, in Central and Eastern Europe as they face enormous challenges. FEBRUARY 10-11: KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SPECIAL COLLECTION for the Bishop s Seminarian Fund. Money collected for this appeal will be matched by the K of C and presented to Bishop Malesic to use at his discretion for the needs of Seminarians in formation. FEBRUARY 17-18, 2018: HOME MISSIONS OF AMERICA APPEAL. This Collection helps Diocese in the United States designated as Home Missions. This designations means that without outside support these diocese could not provide essential services like: Mass, administration of the Sacraments, Clergy and Seminarian education, Education to the Laity, etc. Realizing our good fortune, prayerfully consider how you can help. FEBRUARY 24-25, 2018: LOCAL CHARITIES COLLECTION: Helping the Poor & Needy in our midst. Page 3

4 Reading & Reflections PAUL S CORNITH We re reading St. Paul s letter to the Corinthians these days. What was Corinth like? It had a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for very easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its economic success even today. In Paul s day it was a cosmopolitan and wealthy city with inhabitants drawn from all over the world, including a sizeable Jewish community. When Paul arrived about the year 50, the city was only about a century old, but already five times the size of Athens. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. The community of Christians there struggled against the influence of a very secular and self-indulgent society that was blind to the plight of the poor. Pagan attitudes afflicted the community, which had a way of breaking Paul s heart; he wrote to them sometimes with many tears (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by a series of earthquakes over the centuries, and what little remained was totally obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There s a core city with glamorous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of marble, tiles, and minerals everywhere, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. Today, the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the marketplace are more ruined than most such sites. The glory of the city Paul knew well has faded, but the relevance of his words shines through the centuries. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Job experienced months of misery and troubled nights (Job 7:1-4, 6-7). Psalm Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted (Psalm 147). Second Reading I have become all things to all, to save at least some (1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23). Gospel Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases (Mark 1:29-39). TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of His new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for Him, they pursue Him, filled with the fervor that His ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example He gave until the end of His earthly life, He tells his followers that this is His whole purpose. Through Mark, He is also telling the early church, and He is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world.
