6 COFFEE with the PASTOR November, 2018 We all know what we think of when we hear the word November. Winter and Christmas are right around the corner, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. Most of all we know that Thanksgiving falls of the fourth Thursday of November each year, a time that has been celebrated off and on, according to Wikipeda, since 1789 after a proclamation by George Washington. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863 when President Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. (Wikipedia) But Thanksgiving ought not to be observed only on the fourth Thursday of November, but on each and every day of our lives. We have so much to be thankful for, that to try to cram it all in to one day of the year, is actually ridiculous. So, as you enjoy your traditional Thanksgiving Dinner with your family and or friends this year, go ahead and give God thanks for all that he has provided for you. And then, on the day after Thanksgiving Day, and the day after that, and the day after that, etc.. continue to do the same. God is Good! Every Day! Every Day God is Good! Here at the First Presbyterian Church you have A LOT to be thankful for. As a church you have a great opportunity for ministry in Minerva and the surrounding area. Many people around you are lonely, hurting, in need of a helping hand and, most importantly, need to know that someone cares, that they are loved and that God is the source of that love. You have dedicated people who serve on the ministry teams of the church, on the board of session, on sub-committees of the session and those who just pitch in whenever and wherever needed. There are those who have given of their self and their time almost every week in service to the church, whether it s the clerk of session, volunteer Church School teachers and Bible Study leaders, all who have spent hours in their positions or as volunteers. You also have staff members who take their position seriously and are here every week so that the business and worship of the church might continue in a God-honoring fashion. You have been very supportive of local missions, national missions and international mission, and I have no doubt that many of the people of this community are grateful for your ministry. Thanksgiving It s an attitude, not just a day. It s a lifestyle, not just a once-a-year celebration. It s a way of showing God how much we appreciate those around us, the tasks God has given us to perform, and most of all it s a way of letting God know how truly grateful we are, for ALL the blessings he has given us. Thanks to God! And to all of you for helping to make the First Presbyterian Church, Minerva what it is today and what it will be tomorrow. Grace and peace, Pastor Dan
