1 Heavenly Father, on this day, a terrible act of brutality was visited upon our people. We ask for Your grace upon the souls of those who died this day, and the loved ones they left behind. Bless those who, today, work unceasingly to protect us all from further acts of violence. Change the hearts and minds of those who would murder the innocent in Your Name. Help us to remember Christ's victory over all death. Lead us all to You, Lord, in a true unity, begotten not of blood that was shed in anger, but shed by Your Son, out of love for us. Amen.

3 SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 PAGE 3 from the Desk of the Senior Parochial Vicar... Welcome to our new bishop! The Diocese informed us priests that our new bishop would be installed as the eleventh bishop of Cleveland on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 5, Beside the installation Mass, there also would be a Solemn Vespers presideded over by Bishop Daniel Thomas the day before on Labor Day evening at 5:30 p.m. We were informed that admittance would be by ticket only and that we would have to ask the diocese for tickets to one or both of the events. Usually a priest can just show up for an event at the cathedral and be a concelebrant seated in that transept area where the confessionls are located, stage right of the cathedral sanctuary or be a concelebrant seated in that sanctuary itself. I knew that I would not be able to attend the Tuesday Installation Mass because I was scheduled for the Tuesday 12:10 p.m. Mass here and would never be able to be downtown on time. So I requested only a ticket for the Monday Vespers. Piece of cake, I thought. It will be on our national holiday and hardly anyone would be downtown. The Diocese sent me my ticket for vespers along with a map for parking lots. I left early because I thought it might be cool to stroll around downtown; and because of my hearing handicap I would grab a seat up close to the front to better be able to hear the sermon which would be given by Bishop Perez. My first mistake was to not take into account the big Cleveland National Air Show along the lakefront. All of the added people downtown for the Vespers or the Air Show brought their cars. Where to park? I had thought parking would be easy downtown on a holiday. Before I left our parish I had circled a parking lot on that map from the Diocese not far from the Cleveland Mariott Downtown at Key Center. My first challenge was that that entrance was blocked off by construction or whatever was behind the fence by the hotel. Things went bad quickly. I started navigating around and found the other lots were full. After about ten minutes of aimless circling, I decided that I would work my way out of downtown to the freeway and go home. I was having my conversation with the Lord telling Him that I could take a hint and I would go home. For the third time I found myself going past Old Stone Church on my right and ahead on my left was a closed parking lot that had maybe twenty cars in it. AND BEHOLD, I saw out of the corner of my eye a human arm go up as if someone in bed was yawning inside the little toll booth by the parking lot s entrance. The huge street I was approaching was miraculously clear of all northbound traffic, so I made an illegal hard left from Rockwell right into the corner entrance. As I pulled in a startled fellow in the little booth suddenly sat up from what may have been a reclining chair. I now realized that his parking lot was open and I had a parking spot not too far from the cathedral. When I pray Vespers by myself in our parish rectory, it usually takes me ten minutes or so. The Solemn Vespers went over an hour. There were several choirs. One sang in the Tagalog Language of the Philippines. I think there was a hymn in Spanish, and of course much of the singing was in English. Most memorable for me was the Marian hymn that we call the Magnificat which was sung in English but to a Black Gospel Music melody or style. Bishop Perez had a folksie homily which seemed to me to be quite charming, Unfortunately I could only make out about half of what he said. I was seated in the ninth row along the south wall of the cathedrel. And YES, I was wearing my hearing aids which also greatly magnified the sound of the air-conditioning outlet right above me. I have always wondered how clearly the crowd ( The people who were fed numbered four thousand, apart from women and children. Matt. 15:38) who were fed from only seven loaves and a few fish were able to hear Jesus on the mountainside. Much of Monday s experience was just being there and feeling the event. I walked from the cathedral to the reception at Key Center with a priest from Philadelphia whom I met exiting the cathedral. We went up the escalator and then he drifted off to clergy he knew as I first checked out the food. There were docks or stations all over that huge room where an entree of turkey with multiple possible toppings was in one place, Beef Wellington at another, indivedual salads, pastry desserts, and finally coffee, hot water and softdrinks. Waiters and waitresses were circulating with trays of round balls and puffy things. I would never want such a kind person offering me food to feel rejected, so I always smiled, took something, and thanked that person. I ended up at a round table with five Cleveland priests and an interesting laywoman with big glasses who was funny with her observations. I probably overate, but it was a happy occasion. As Bishop Perez finally entered there was a round of applause. Bishop Perez stood in a side hallwaylike-section of the room with a long line of people lined up to talk to him. Hhmm! Stand in line for a maybe thirty seconds conversation with the bishop, or get more food? More food,or the bishop? Alas, food won out. I am certain that I will get to talk to Bishop Perez in the future. I used to kid Bishop Lennon that he should respect his elders because I was two years his senior in both age and years ordained a priest. To our newly arrived Bishop Perez (continued on page 4, column 2)

Please come and share your ideas for events for the Guild year. (contined from Senior Parochial Vicar s Desk on page 3) I am sixteen years older and ordained a priest eighteen years before he was. Alas, I must keep in mind that I may be a SENIOR Parochial Vicar, but he is, simply, THE BISHOP. I look forward to personally meeting him as he settles into he being our Shepherd. Just as I feel Our Lord seems to have wanted me to be at the Vespers, I am even more certain that He has sent Bishop Nelson Jesus Perez to be a Successor of the Apostles to the Church at Cleveland. As he builds up the City of God, may he build up The Diocese of Cleveland to meet today s challenges. Father Winkel P.S.
