3 December 21, 14, 2014 Fourth Third Sunday Sundayof ofadvent Advent Page Page103 A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, Merry Christmas! On behalf of all the priests, deacons and staff of Saints Peter and Paul, I would like to wish everyone a truly Blessed Christmas and a joyous New Year! The Savior is come! Offices Closed The parish offices will be closed from December 24th through January 4th. If you have an emergency or or need to plan a funeral, please phone the parish number and press '1'. A priest will be paged and will return your phone call. Church Restoration We had a wonderful meeting with Dr. Denis McNamara as we presented the plans for our church restoration last week. We also stuffed in the bulletin a rendering of the proposed plans along with a question and answer key; however, you can view a video of the entire meeting on our webpage by logging onto and then pressing the "Giving Glory to God" button on the main page. Please take the time to view this video as it is a wonderful and complete explanation of plans. Work on the church will begin on January 5th and should be completed in early March. Although scaffolding will cover the main sanctuary of the church, Sunday Masses will continue to be celebrated in the main church during the period of restoration. Weekday Masses, Confessions, Funerals and other prayer services on weekdays (including Saturday morning) will take place in the Holy Family Chapel. For further information, please consult our parish webpage. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota O sweet Child of Bethlehem, grant that we may share with all our hearts in this profound mystery of Christmas. Put into the hearts of men and women this peace for which they sometimes seek so desperately and which you alone can give to them. Help them to know one another better, and to live as brothers and sisters, children of the same Father. Reveal to them also your beauty, holiness and purity. Awaken in their hearts love and gratitude for your infinite goodness. Join them all together in your love. And give us your heavenly peace. Amen. - Christmas Prayer of St. John XXIII Source: ncea.org

6 December 21, 2014 Page 6 Christian Service Happenings TRANSITIONAL HOUSING MINISTRY Car Donation Desperately Needed One of the homeless mothers in our transitional housing program has a critical need for a donated used car for basic transportation to work and other necessary family driving requirements. If you have a used vehicle in fairly good working condition that you would be willing to donate to a needy family as a tax-deductible donation or even sell at a very minimal price, please call Jack Flowers as soon as possible at for further details. Thank you for your generous consideration of this great need! ELIZABETH MINISTRY As Mary went in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was with a child to help and comfort her, so does our Elizabeth Ministry for all those who are in need. If you have experienced infertility, loss of a pregnancy, an infant or child death, you are not alone, many of our parish families have experienced the same and the Elizabeth Ministry would like to help you through it. On the other hand, if you are expecting for the first time, or you are new parents who just had a baby or adopted a child, the Elizabeth Ministry would like to celebrate with you and offer our services to you. Through prayers, adoration hours, and sharing personal experiences, our ministers will try to bring you some peace and comfort no matter what your situation is. Contact Sarah at: or her at: elizabeth_ministry@sbcglobal.net. Legion of Mary Our Lady of Sorrows Praesidium We welcome you to join us in praying the rosary and devotional prayers in the spirit of faith and in union with our Blessed Virgin Mother, as we fulfill the spiritual needs of our parish community. The Legion of Mary is the largest worldwide apostolic association of lay people in the Catholic Church who are devoted to our most Blessed Virgin Mother. Meetings are held every Monday evening from 6:30-8:00pm in the Ministry Center, Room 227, upper level. Contact Paulette Shea at if you have any questions. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Imagine how Mary felt at the birth of Jesus: excited, awed, frightened. Deep faith was her light in the darkness, for Jesus was born during the night of the year when darkness is the longest. In faith is found the real, lasting, and deep joy of Christmas. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul conference was able to assist over 200 individuals and families and provide about 710 meals in the month of November. Through your generous offerings we were able to provide food for Thanksgiving dinners, transportation assistance, and pay monthly household bills, rent and house payments. May God bless you for sharing with those less fortunate. Please continue to help us by placing a donation in a green envelope found at the side and rear entrances of the church and chapel. We may be contacted by calling Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-toperson service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. 10 December 21, 2014 Page 10 Pray With Us PRAY FOR PRIESTS TODAY In strengthening the priest you strengthen the whole Church. Strengthen the priest and you strengthen the whole foundation, you strengthen everything in the Church. Fr. Gerald Fitzgerald. S.P. During Advent we are recruiting volunteers to make a year-long commitment, beginning January 4th, to spend an hour in prayer each week for the priests of our parish. We will begin with seven individuals who will commit to offering a Holy Hour exclusively for our parish priests on a distinct day of the week, thus covering a complete week. The commitment of each person will be to the day of the week, not a particular hour on a particular day. The holy hour can be done before the Blessed Sacrament (or at home, if necessary). After we have secured a holy hour for our parish priests, for each day of the week, we hope to expand the Holy Hours to include seven parishioners to pray for the deacons; for the Bishop and his Auxiliary Bishop; and for religious and seminarians. St. Augustine declared, Certainly, if there are good sheep there are also good shepherds; good sheep give rise to good shepherds. As members of this parish, this community, this fold, we must pray for our pastor, priests, deacons, bishops, religious and seminarians. What a great way to begin the New Year! Saint Pope John Paul reminded us in 2004, There can be no Eucharist without the priesthood, just as there can be no priesthood without the Eucharist. And, St. John Vianney, Patron of Parish Priests exclaimed, A good shepherd, a pastor after God s heart, is the greatest treasure which the good Lord can grant to a parish, and one of the most precious gifts of divine mercy. Should we not then take an hour and pray that God might strengthen the treasures he has given us? To sign up or for more information, contact Theresa Schuhriemen at or gloriadei85@gmail.com. 11 December 21, 2014 Page 11 Pray With Us With the angel s greeting to Mary the New Testament begins. We could say that the first word of the New Testament is be joyful, be happy, in other words joy. This is the true meaning of Christmas: God is near us, so near that He became a child. We realize that today s world where God is absent is dominated by fear, by uncertainty. Nonetheless, the words be joyful because God is with you and with us truly open a new time. Joy is the true gift of Christmas, not the expensive gifts that call for time and money. We can communicate this joy simply: with a smile, a kind gesture, a little help, forgiveness. And the joy we give will certainly come back to use...let us pray that this presence of the liberating joy of God shines forth in our lives. -Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI St. Francis Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel PRAYER NETWORK If prayers are needed, please call Jay Albarran at or Connie Wanberg at The Angelus V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with Thee; Blessed art thou among women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen Open for prayer 24 hours a day, seven days a week V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R. Be it done unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary... Attention Parishioners and Visitors V. And the Word was made Flesh. R. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary Please consider spending an hour with our Lord. Adorers are needed for the following hours: 9 am Thursday 10 pm Saturday Please consider visiting with our Lord at this time. Call Barb at or blandiak@gmail.com ROSARY Come pray with us each Tuesday evening in the Church beginning at 7:30 PM. With our Rosaries, we will ask Our Lady to intercede for our Holy Father s special intention of the month, as well as for our own intentions and for world peace without the threat of terrorism. On the third Tuesday of the month, there will be a Rosary Holy Hour with Benediction. All are most welcome to join us. If there is a special intention that you would like to have remembered during the weekly Rosary, please sspprosary@gmail.com or come to the Tuesday Rosary to add your intention. V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us Pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

13 December 21, 2014 Page 13 BAPTISM INFORMATION What about Baptism? Do you want to have your child baptized? What a joy it is to experience the gift of new life that God gives to His people. Immediately the mystery of God s love is revealed in the mystery of His creative power which He allows Christian parents to share. Ss. Peter and Paul Parish rejoices with all parents beholding this tremendous gift. Since the Sacrament of Baptism is essential to the Christian life, Ss. Peter and Paul Parish abides by all the norms set forth by the Catholic Church in administering the Sacrament of Baptism. We want the baptism of your child to bear the full Grace that Christ bestows in this sacrament and we do not want any obstacles which would be created by not following these norms. These norms are laid down by the Roman Catholic Church and are age old and time tested norms. We ask all parents to understand the sacred nature of this sacrament which these norms protect and therefore the inability for Ss. Peter and Paul Parish to compromise these norms without endangering this sacred character. The code of canon law declares: Baptism, the gate to the sacraments, necessary for salvation in fact or at least in intention, by which men and women are freed from their sins, are reborn as children of God and, configured to Christ by an indelible character, are incorporated in the Church, is validly conferred only by washing with true water together with the required form of words. 1 Further, in order to celebrate the sacrament of baptism licitly the priest must have a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion; if such a hope is altogether lacking, the baptism is to be put off according to the prescription of the law and the parents are to be informed of the reason. 2 Please note that this is a direct quotation from the Code of Canon Law which is the universal law of the Roman Catholic Church. This well-founded hope is manifested not simply by the parents statements but also by their actions. The parents manifest this founded hope when they attend Mass regularly and seek an on-going relationship with the Church. 1 CIC 1983, canon CIC 1983, canon 868,2. Godparents When choosing godparents, it behooves the couple to be quite selective. The purpose of the godparent is to guide the child in the ways of the faith so that they might reach heaven. The Code of Canon Law explains that the godparent is one who will help the baptized to lead a Christian life in harmony with baptism, and to fulfill faithfully the obligations connected with it. This godparent must: Have completed the sixteenth year. 3 Be a Catholic who has received their first communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation. 4 Lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken. 5 Not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared. 6 Not be the father or the mother. 7 A life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken means someone who is practicing their faith weekly, believes what the Church believes, is validly married in the Church or living a chaste single life and has no other obstacles to being a good Catholic example of Christian life. A person of another Christian denomination or other religion cannot be a godparent; however, a Christian person of another Christian denomination may serve as a Christian witness which is not a godparent and whose name does not appear on the baptismal certificate. 8 A Catholic cannot be a Christian witness. Any Catholic party is bound by the laws which govern godparents, cf. above. An individual who has left the Catholic faith cannot be a Christian witness because they have freely chosen no longer to live the Catholic faith. Parents may choose to have only one godparent. If the parents choose to have two godparents, one must be male and one female. 9 The relationship of two godparents emulates spiritually the parenthood of the biological parents. Just as it is impossible to have two biological parents who are of the same sex so is it impossible to have two godparents of the same sex. 3 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1. 5 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 7 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 9 CIC 1983, canon CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 6 CIC 1983, canon 874, 1 8 CIC 1983, canon 874, 2 In order to avoid any embarrassment on your part, it is advisable that you contact the parish office prior to choosing your godparents. Your godparents will be asked to have their parish priest fill out a godparents form testifying that they fulfill the canonical requirements. SSPP offers a Baptism Preparation Class for parents on the 1st Monday of each month beginning at 7:30 PM in the St. Paul Center for the New Evangelization (formerly called Pastoral Hall). Our next class is Monday, January 5. If this is your first child, you MUST attend a class before receiving a date for your baby s baptism. (Both mom and dad are asked to attend. Godparents are also encouraged to attend.) Please sign up for the class by calling the Parish Office, (Your family should be registered with the parish in order to have your child baptized.) If you have attended a class within the last 10 years (at any parish) you need not re-attend. If you attended at Ss. Peter and Paul, simply call the office to schedule your baby s baptism and provide the date you attended; if you attended at another parish, you will be asked to provide a letter of verification. We baptize at SSPP each Sunday of the month at 2 PM. Because baptism is meant to be a celebration of the community, we DO NOT schedule private baptisms. Also, we make every effort to limit the number of children baptized to four. Please check with the Parish Office to make certain the date you want is available before making plans with your family. The offering to the church for a baptism is $ Couples may pay when they attend the Baptismal Preparation class or they can send payment to the parish office. Required paperwork MUST be submitted to the parish office no later than ten (10) business days prior to the baptismal date, or your date will be rescheduled. This includes all necessary information regarding family records and godparents. A sponsor certificate must be provided by each godparent who belongs to a different parish. The proper sponsor certificate for SSPP will be distributed at our preparation classes and may also be downloaded from our parish website. Christian witnesses are most welcome to celebrate with the family and community, but please note they are not recorded as sponsors on the baptismal certificate or in the baptismal register. Thank you for your cooperation and may Almighty God bless you and your family.
