3 Page 3 September 4, 2013 Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, As always, thank you to so many generous parishioners who have contributed to the welfare of the parish in so many ways including their time, talent and treasure. The parish successfully conducted Pass It On two years ago and parishioners have been faithfully making their pledge payments. This has allowed us to accomplish most of the many major projects which Pass It On was initiated to accomplish including the tuck pointing of our school buildings, the installation of a new HVAC system in our Jr. High School, a new roof on the Elementary School building and installation of an updated fire alarm and sprinkler systems in the both the parish church and St. Paul Center and updating of the Holy Family Chapel. The parish received a private bequest which allowed us to restore the parish bells which have not rung in decades. All of these improvements, however, were accomplished through the Pass It On funds and private bequests. We cannot use private bequests to balance the budget from year to year, because this type of funding is not consistent from year to year. There are other projects which we had hoped to accomplish from the parish operating funds which we were not able to complete due to lower Sunday collections, e.g., tuckpointing of the parish church, new roof on the rectory, etc. Due to lower Sunday collections, the parish realized a deficit of nearly $16,000 this year. The Sunday collections were lower than budget by more than $110,000 in the last fiscal year. The only reason the deficit was not higher was that we did not use the funds in the operating budget which were set aside for the capital improvements already mentioned. For the present fiscal year, our parish finance office and finance commission were able to reduce expenses by not filling the position of one of our full-time parish staff members who retired this year and other reductions in our expenses. This allowed us to submit a balanced budget for the present fiscal year while including some funds for the capital projects mentioned above. Even with these reductions in staffing and spending, we will still need parishioner help to realize our balanced budget. This fiscal year actually includes one less Sunday than in the prior year due to leap year. Even though we were able to reduce our budgeted Sunday revenue by nearly $76,000 and compensate for lower total revenue of more than $125,000 for the present fiscal year, we still need your help to accomplish the parish goals. Due to the significant subsidy offered by the parish, the benefit of the school endowment funds and other school fundraising and moderate increases in tuition, the parish school continues to remain well in the black. Please watch for the upcoming stewardship letters this coming week and, on behalf of the people of Saints Peter and Paul Parish and all those we serve, thank you to so many generous parishioners. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Fr. Thomas Milota (Financial Report begins on page 4)

8 Page 8 How many of us Catholics received the sacraments as children, but never gained an adult understanding of the Gospel and the teachings of the Church? Or perhaps it s just time for a refresher on Catholicism 101! The Main Event is a thorough study of the Catholic Faith, beginning in the fall and finishing at Easter. It is called the Main Event because it is a significant catechesis (teaching of the Catholic Faith) offered at our parish. The Main Event is open to anyone who wishes to come. Any adult Catholic wanting to understand the Faith better and especially to see the why behind many of our beliefs and practices would benefit from this series. Join us Tuesday evenings from 7:30-9:00 in the Ministry Center Social Hall beginning Tuesday, September 10 th. No fees and no registration required. "Children of Mary" is a group of special needs teens and adults who get together socially to grow and be nurtured in their Catholic faith. Every Friday the group meets for various activities that take place in the Chicago area. They always meet at Corpus Christi Parish, 1415 W. Lies Rd., in Carol Stream, at 10AM and the day ends at 2PM. For more information, or to volunteer to help with this ministry, please Debbie at luvkids4life@yahoo.com or visit the website childrenofmary.weebly.com/ Join fellow pro-lifers at the annual Woman's Choice Services Banquet on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Drury Lane, in Oakbrook Terrace. Cocktails begin at 6:00PM with dinner and program beginning at 7:00PM. Dinner is complementary. An opportunity to make a financial gift will be extended. Keynote speakers are Don & Connie Ambrecht, founders of Sonography Now. For more information please call Mary Griffith at (630) or at mary@womanschoiceservices.com. LOAVES AND FISHES COLLECTION REMINDER: Next weekend, September 14/15, is our 3rd Sunday of the Month collection for the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry. Please place your donations on the steps in front of the communion rail in Church, or by the doors outside the Chapel in the Ministry Center next weekend. Thank you for your generosity! ROSARY Come pray with us each Tuesday evening in the Church beginning at 7:30 PM. With our Rosaries, we will ask Our Lady to intercede for our Holy Father s special intention of the month, as well as for our own intentions and for world peace without the threat of terrorism. On the third Tuesday of the month, there will be a Rosary Holy Hour with Benediction. All are most welcome to join us. If there is a special intention that you would like to have remembered during the weekly Rosary, please sspprosary@gmail.com or come to the Tuesday Rosary to add your intention.

11 The New Evangelization Page 11 Door of Faith Speaker Series Fr. Cassian Folsom Fr. Cassian Folsom will present: The Rule of Faith - The Mystery of Faith: The Relationship between the Eucharist and the Creed. September 28 th, 2013 at 10:00 am in the Holy Family Chapel. Father Folsom is a monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey, Saint Meinrad, Indiana, and professor of liturgy at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome. He is the founding prior of the Monastero di San Benedetto, a new Benedictine monastery in Norcia, Italy, the birthplace of Saints Benedict and Scholastica. Do You Know Someone who may Wish to Become Catholic? Do you know someone who may be interested in becoming Catholic? As we look forward to the closing of the Year of Faith, consider inviting someone you know to check out the RCIA process. Perhaps you yourself have been attending Mass for years with family, but haven t yet made the formal step of coming into the Catholic Church. RCIA (The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the process by which adults learn about the Catholic Faith, and seek entrance through the Sacraments of Initiation. RCIA is for adults who are unbaptized, baptized in other Christian communities, or adults baptized as Catholics but who have not completed the sacraments of Confirmation or Eucharist. Sessions begin Tuesday, September 10 th, and run Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 through the Easter season. Contact Mike for more details at or mbrummond@sspeterandpaul.net. Ongoing: The Main Event How many of us Catholics received the sacraments as children, but never gained an adult understanding of the Gospel and the teachings of the Church? Or perhaps it s just time for a refresher on Catholicism 101! The Main Event is a thorough study of the Catholic Faith, beginning in the fall and finishing in the spring. Tuesday nights 7:30-9:00 pm in the Ministry Center Social Hall beginning September 10 th. No fees. If you re interested in joining us, an RSVP to Mike Brummond is appreciated at or mbrummond@sspeterandpaul.net George Wiegel Save the Date!
