Rosary Society Meeting On Monday, April 9th at 7:00PM, there will be a Rosary Society general meeting. The slate of new officers will be presented with voting taking place at that time. Following the meeting, a very special interactive activity is planned. Joan Castellano, a certified Laughter Yoga Instructor, will join us for an evening of laughter, relaxation, and movement. Laughter yoga perks: Strengthen your immune system, lower your blood pressure, and alleviate your arthritis, a natural analgesic and No-Carb! Comfortable clothing along with a water bottle is recommended. All are welcome to attend and light refreshments will follow. The Mass for those celebrating a 5th or 25th Anniversary will be at 3:00 pm on April 29th - registration due April 20th. Please RSVP at or Lauren.Egan@rcan.org Faith Formation Schedule Sunday Classes Tuesday Classes March 18, & 25 March 20, & 27 Sunday, March 25-8th Grade Faith Night During Lent, we are called to pray, fast and give alms, so that we may prepare our hearts to receive full the joy of Easter. Operation Rice Bowl is a great way to work on all three of those parts of Lent! If you or your family decide that a good thing to fast from would be those stops at McDonald's and those quick dinners before everyone scatters to their own corners of the house, you could use that to benefit others too. The fasting (or refraining from) that McD's run will save you some money and that money could be put into the Operation Rice Bowl box. Now of course you still need to eat, but maybe instead of a quick meal, everyone helps to make dinner. When you sit down to eat, you could pray together to thank God and to pray for those who are in need. If you did that once a week for the 6 weeks of Lent, just think of how much different your Lent will be! You will grow closer as a family, pray together, and help others ($20 per meal for a family x 6 weeks = $120). The money raised through Operation Rice Bowl will go to feed the hungry in the US and around the world. Now that is a life changing Lent! 656 Page 3

5 This is not a test. But...I do like use the Socratic method of asking questions when teaching, learning or just clarifying my thoughts. Consider the questions in italics that follow. It s not a test. Think of it as a means of shifting the focus from where you ve been and what you ve been doing to participating in liturgy (The work of the people. ) Did you notice a change in music last week? What do you remember? Did you find any of the music to be familiar? Last Sunday was the first Sunday of Lent. This brought about several changes in the liturgy as well as the music. At St. Mary s we replace the processional hymn with instrumental music during lent. The leader of song proclaims the entrance antiphon (today s will be taken from psalm 25) and concludes with Please rise. How would you describe this music? Do you recognize it? During lent the Gloria is eliminated. At St. Mary s we underscore this change and the penitential aspect of lent by singing the Kyrie. The setting we use was written by Mary Haugen. It is also what I play and improvise on during the procession. During lent we chant the prayer of the faithful. One of the singers chants the intercession to which another responds, Lord have mercy. Please repeat this when the leader of song lifts his or her hands. We will repeat "God of Mercy" at the offertory and change the communion song to Transfigure Us, O Lord, to reflect today's gospel. Finally we have returned to the mass of Christ the Savior for the Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, Great amen and Lamb of God. Your wonderful participation in these mass parts affirms the investment St. Mary s has put into its worship and music.
