Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God. For great is the power of God; by the humble he is glorified. What is too sublime for you, seek not, into things beyond your strength search not. What is committed to you, attend to; for what is hidden is not your concern. With what is too much for you meddle not, when shown things beyond human understanding. Their own opinion has misled many, and false reasoning unbalanced their judgment. 4 ABOUT OUR COVER: Francis of Assisi is honored by the Catholic Church as the patron saint of animals and ecology, and his feast falls on October 4. One of Francis's most famous sermons is one he gave to a flock of birds. One day while Francis and some friars were traveling along the road, Francis looked up and saw the trees full of birds. Francis "left his companions in the road and ran eagerly toward the birds" and "humbly begged them to listen to the word of God." One of the friars recorded the sermon, which overflows with Francis's love for creation and its Creator: "My brothers, birds, you should praise your Creator very much and always love him; he gave you feathers to clothe you, wings so that you can fly, and whatever else was necessary for you. God made you noble among his creatures, and he gave you a home in the purity of the air; though you neither sow nor reap, he nevertheless protects and governs you without any solicitude on your part." Thomas of Celano records that the birds stretched their necks and extended their wings as Francis walked among them touching and blessing them. This event was a turning point of sorts for Francis. "He began to blame himself for negligence in not having preached to the birds before" and "from that day on, he solicitously admonished the birds, all animals and reptiles, and even creatures that have no feeling, to praise and love their Creator." Anonymous OCTOBER ROSARY DEVOTION Please join our rosary devotion for the month of October at the Pastoral Center Chapel. The rosary begins at 6:30 PM except Wednesdays where it begins after the Benediction at 7:30 P.M. CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH If you are interested in knowing more about the Catechism of the Catholic Church, you are invited to attend six classes. You will learn about the History of Catechesis, the Second Vatican Council, and how the Catechism of the Catholic Church came about. Come and grow your faith with others. Classes will be offered on Monday evenings at 7:30 PM in the Flanagan Center, starting September 21 through October 26. Can you give a few hours a week to learn more about your beliefs? 5 WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 5 CATECHISM CORNER #52 by Jerry Back Well, this is 52nd edition of Catechism Corner and it has been a great year putting together these columns every week. I appreciate all the positive feedback and encouragement received from fellow parishioners during this time of discovery and growth for me. Most importantly, if you still haven't obtained a copy of this book that Pope John Paul II calls, "a special gift," then be sure to get one the next time you're in a bookstore or online. Now back to the Catechism Corner. I've heard that there are times when parishioners get so familiar with the Mass that he or she may actually say along with the priest the Eucharistic Prayer. This I'm told is wrong as it encroaches upon the Sacrament of Holy Orders and the priest's ability to act "in persona Christi." The priest acts as Christ, for example, when he says, "take this, all of you, and eat it: this is my body which will be given up for you." We should not, as parishioners, be audibly saying these same words, but be waiting to proclaim the mystery of faith and the great amen. Question: Why do we need priests to act "in persona Christi?" Answer from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (875): "How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher? And how can men preach unless they are sent?" No one - no individual and no community - can proclaim the Gospel to himself: "Faith comes from what is heard." No one can give himself the mandate and the mission to proclaim the Gospel. The one sent by the Lord does not speak and act on his own authority, but by virtue of Christ's authority; not as a member of the community, but speaking to it in the name of Christ. No one can bestow grace on himself; it must be given and offered. This fact presupposes ministers of grace, authorized and empowered by Christ. From him, bishops and priests receive the mission and faculty ("the sacred power") to act in persona Christi Capitis; deacons receive the strength to serve the people of God in the diaconia of liturgy, word and charity, in communion with the bishop and his presbyterate. The ministry in which Christ's emissaries do and give by God's grace what they cannot do and give by their own powers, is called a "sacrament" by the Church's tradition. Indeed, the ministry of the Church is conferred by a special sacrament. Did you ever want to know why we as Catholics do something in a particular way? My daughter gets up and leaves after an hour whether the priest is still talking or not. I say she should stay put until Mass is officially over. Who is right? Leah Dear Leah, Mother is always right. At least that s what my mother told me. There s no rule about how long Mass should last, and it s inappropriate to arrive late or leave before the final blessing or the end of the recessional song. People do have to leave early if they get sick, and doctors, police officers, and fire fighters are sometimes called away. But in general, your weekend activities should be scheduled around Mass. Saturday night Masses were designed for people who have to work Sundays and for parishes with too few priests or too many parishioners to accommodate everyone on Sunday they weren t designed to make it easier to get a good tee time Sunday morning. It s also important to remember that local customs and traditions affect the length of Mass. When I worked as a missionary in Brazil, Sunday Mass could go on for nearly three hours. When I celebrated Mass in Scotland, the pastor said I had to be done in a half hour. Most areas have more than one church. Encourage your daughter to either grow accustomed to the tradition of the parish she attends or look for another church. As a rule, I don t think it s good to shop around for Mass, but if your daughter is that bothered by the length of the Mass at her current church, it might be better for her to go elsewhere. CONGRATULATIONS! Justin Goh, 7A, played in the All Stars Golf Tournament of Champions on Sunday, September 20 th. This is an invitation only tournament to top junior golfers (13 and under) of Northern California. We are proud to say that Justin won the division and shot a 1 under par 35 for 9 holes.
