4 January 10 THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD Prayer features prominently in the Gospel according to Luke, as in the parable of the unjust judge (18:1-8). Told about their need to pray always and not to lose heart, it concludes What will God grant justice to his chosen who cry to him day and night? Pray, our Lord says. AT key moments, we see Jesus himself praying. He retreats to the wilderness to pray, he spends an entire night in prayer. The first time he is recorded as praying is after receiving John s baptism. Praying for what? Consider his later remark: if you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him? (11:13). To those who pray, the Spirit will be given. Even with Jesus there is a correlation between earnest prayer and the gift of the Spirit. All the more is prayer the means by which we share God s life already in this world and prepare to share it fully in the next. When I pray, am I praying for the right things? Am I praying for the Spirit to be present in my life? Contact SF Archdiocese Holy Name parish pro-life coordinator Maureen Kirwan (415) or maureengoword@comcast.net CATHOLIC CHARITIES CYO HALL OF FAME TO HONOR PETE MURRAY Congratulations to Pete Murray, long time coach and Athletic Director at Holy Name of Jesus Parish in the late 1950's through the mid-1980's, one of the founding fathers of CYO Athletics, Pete Murray will be honored along with Maureen Moriarty and Joanne Fitzpatrick as inductees into the CYO Hall of Fame at the 2010 CYO Hall of Fame Dinner on January 23, 2010 at the Father O Reilly Catholic Charities CYO Center at the St. Emydius gym. The dinner honors individuals who have made an extraordinary impact on the community, provided a legacy of leadership and have championed the virtues and values of CYO Athletics. Pete was the first chair of the CYO Athletics Advisory Board, and as a Holy Name parish school Athletic Director, his program became a model for other athletic programs. His forward thinking in creative multiple divisions per game is a key reason the CYO Athletics program is unique and continues to be one of the most successful leagues in San Francisco. The aim of the council is to make the life and activity of the parish ever more closely conform to the gospel. It assists the parish s apostolic work, and coordinates various independent lay associations and initiatives. The members offer wise counsel so that the pastor can plan the pastoral program systematically and carry it out effectively. PARENTS GUILD: A fundamental reason for the success of our school program is the unique partnership developed between parents and school staff. By taking an active part in our home-school partnership, parents become role models for our students and show their children that they value school. The Parents Guild raises money for the school through various fund-raising activities which they sponsor and coordinate. The monthly meetings are held every 2nd Thursday of the month in Flanagan Center. This organization provides spiritual, educational and recreational opportunities for its members. Continued next column. FAZing Words! by Fr. Arnold Zamora It has been customary to make some resolutions at the begining of the New Year. They are things that we want to accomplish in the days to come. One of the most popular resolutions has to do with losing weight or something related to that like abstinence from chocolate, soda, bread, rice etc. For some, it has been a yearly resolution, not having found the right solution. They are not just making resolutions but finding other solutions, making resolutions. A wise man once made a list of resolutions that somehow disturbed me. I was initially fazed by his resolutions but I think the list will help insure that we will have a happy and prosperous new year. In the New Year, be sure to LIE, CHEAT, DRINK, SWEAR and STEAL more than you did last year! Let me explain the fazing words. LIE back and relax just a little more this new year. Let a little more life happen to you without so much worry. CHEAT failure. Don't be afraid to try something new because you think you may fail. It is through failure that we learn the most valuable lessons. DRINK from the fountain of knowledge. Many people around you have already been down roads you are about to travel. Learn from mistakes they have made. Take what they have learned and use it. SWEAR to do your best, all the time, in every situation. That is all anybody will ever ask. STEAL a little time for God. Everyday take a little more time to develop your relationship with God. So, if you lie, cheat, drink, swear and steal just a little more in the next year, you will have a profitable and enjoyable year ahead! God bless you in 2010! They propagate this devotion through prayer and various apostolic service such as visits to families, hospitals, prisons and nursing homes. They also do door to door visits in the name of the Parish. THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD Is 42:1 4, 6 7; Acts 10:34 38; Lk 3:15 16, When Jesus goes down into the Jordan s water, he immerses himself in the world of John the Baptist. He walks out into the river and stands next to a stark, strange figure. Jesus is now in a wilderness that needs a new path cut through it. John s hands grasp and submerge Jesus. He comes up soaked to the bone in John s arms, squinting into the sun, lifted into a striking new vision. Jesus stands in mud and water. The heavens shift and open. And God is pleased. What is unfolding here? Long prophetic hopes have reached out for, yearned for, this event. Here is the One sent by God. The world is messed up. God promises help. God sends the prophet John, who preaches. The main act is starting. What will God s work look like? John sets the stage in a desert. Is that a clever metaphor, a good visual aid? John really lives there in the desert. He eats locusts. (Sound appetizing? Does honey help? Anyone tempted to join him?) Today s reading brings a familiar biblical image to our attention. Is it so familiar that our imaginations lose the earthly struggles that engulf these people and their hope for earthly Presence? A spectrum of strong emotions and expectations attach to Isaiah s prophesy. Life and death are at stake in John s baptism. John the Baptist preaches power. A New Baptizer will use fire. It is comforting to know God is coming. But do we want to see the Spirit who comes with fire? Fire can warm us gently. Fire can destroy swiftly. What s at stake when we say yes to baptism in Jesus Christ? In that water, we unite ourselves to Christ s death and resurrection. Here are the waters where Christ s baptism lives and lifts us too. I ve learned that even when I have pains, I don t have to be one. MAYA ANGELOU January 10, 2010 Dear Padre Why did Jesus need to be baptized? I was taught that Jesus was born without original sin. Since the whole point of baptism is to take away original sin, why did John need to baptize Jesus? Dan Dear Dan, Jesus baptism and ours are two different realities. You are right: Jesus was sinless; original sin never touched him. Jesus baptism was actually the baptism of John. The Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes Luke 3:3 to teach us that John s baptism was a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (535). It was more like receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday than the sacrament of baptism you and I received. The sacrament of baptism removes original sin by joining us to the sinless life of Jesus. Life in him is death to all sin, especially original sin. We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life (Romans 6:4). What, then, was the point of John s baptizing Jesus? It was to express Jesus oneness with all the people who confessed their sinfulness by seeking John s baptism. Jesus was saying by his baptism that he was one of them, and one of us, sinners all. This humility so pleased his Father that a voice was heard from heaven: You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased (Mark 1:11).
