3 To all my sons and daughters in Christ, We continue to walk this great journey of Advent, approaching Christmas, when God was born into this world with a sacred human heart. Thus I wish to speak more about the great devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our Lord showed St. Margaret Mary His Heart as a sign of the great love He has for us. He said to her, Behold this Heart which has loved men so much. When we see His Heart, we are to be reminded that God is love, and that he desires our love in return. While enthroning the Sacred Heart and keeping His commandments publicly acknowledges His Kingship and Headship, striving to love Him more and more each day is necessary if we are to preserve and deepen our friendship with Him. Participation in the Holy Mass and the worthy reception of our King in Holy Communion are particularly fruitful ways of deepening our love for and friendship with Christ. 4 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS KNIGHTS CORNER Our Lady of the Dells Council of the Knights of Columbus would like to thank all the members of Saint Cecilia s and visitors who donated during our Food Pantry Drive. Nearly 200 pounds of food, a total of 365 items and $ were donated making this a success for the Food Pantry and those who depend on it. ALSO The Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest deadline is 15 at 4:00 p.m. All entries must be turned into the Parish Office at that time to be considered for judging. This weekend! Bless Our Priests Collection for Diocesan Retired Priests Make sure to remember the retired priests of our diocese by making a gift to the Bless Our Priests collection. This collection is used to directly support all retired priests welfare including the rising cost of healthcare, long-term care and medical costs. Please use the envelopes found on the table in the Gathering Room or contribute during the second collection. Your generosity supports retired priests from all 11 counties of our Diocese! In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us that the good news can be seen, touched, felt and heard through the lives of God s people. We are now charged to take up the ministry of Jesus, but we can t just ask people to take our word for it; our actions must speak for us. Care of the Sick - Communion will be brought to the homebound and the sick who are confined to their homes each week. The Church has already started her New Year, while the world awaits for a crystal ball to drop in Times Square. We decorate beautifully and prepare excitedly as we wait in anticipation of Christmas, the birthday of the King of kings. Nothing is impossible for God. God is all good, all powerful and all perfect. Jesus who is fully God became fully man. Jesus became a little helpless child who had to be cared for and watched over by the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph. All the prophecies were fulfilled in Christ. A star appeared in the heavens, a brilliant light; a sign of the Manifestation and many people were unsettled because they were jealous. Jealous of Christ, the power He had, the miracles He would be capable to perform and lives He would change. Herod wanted to be king alone. For Herod, the thought of a King more powerful than himself was too much for him. Already the world was threatened by and at war with Jesus. As we wait to celebrate the birth of the One who changed the world, let us reflect on how much we can trust God and anticipate ultimate good from Him. The world tries to rob us of this trust and anticipation by distracting us with temptations and troubles. The world tempts us to doubt, feel forgotten, feel sorry for ourselves, or take matters into our own hands. But God keeps His promises! Jesus will never throw you under a bus to make Himself look better. Jesus never does anything selfishly for His own glory; His concern is for you. Jesus will never forget you. Jesus knows the desires of the heart. God does not have two natures - one good and one bad. God is completely honest and deception has no part in Him. Jesus came into this world and our greatest challenge is to fully embrace Him and hold nothing back, to stay focused on our eternal life with Him, while still living our lives in this world. Worldly focuses, sins and cares pull us backwards, separating our hearts from the Sacred Heart of Christ. Unite your heart in a special way this Advent with Jesus. Hold him in your heart. Look deeply into His eyes and let Him look into yours. Let this Christmas be a celebration of the birth of your dearest friend, Jesus. He came for you.

6 Saint of the Week: Saint Lucy Lucy s history has been lost and all we really know for certain is that this brave woman, who lived in Syracuse, lost her life during the persecution of Christians in the early fourth century. Her veneration spread to Rome so that by the sixth century the whole Church recognized her courage in defense of the faith. Because people wanted to shed light on Lucy s bravery, legends began to crop up. The one that has passed the test of time tells the story of a young Christian woman who vowed to live her life in service of Christ. Her mother tried to arrange a marriage for her with a pagan and Lucy knew her mother could not be swayed by a young girl s vow, so she devised a plan to convince her mother that Christ was the better partner for life. After several prayers at the tomb of St. Agatha, Lucy saw the saint in a dream. St. Agatha told Lucy her mother s illness would be cured through faith, which Lucy used to persuade her mother to give the dowry of money to the poor and allow her to commit her life to God. While Lucy and her mother were grateful to God, the rejected bridegroom was deeply angered and betrayed Lucy s faith to the governor Paschasius. The governor attempted to force her into defilement at a brothel, but the guards who came to take her away were unable to move her, even after hitching her to a team of oxen. The guards heaped bundles of wood around her but it would not burn so they finally resorted to their swords, and Lucy met her death. Lucy s legend did not end with her death. According to later accounts, Lucy warned Paschasius he would be punished. When the governor heard this, he ordered the guards to gouge out her eyes. When her body was being prepared for burial, they discovered her eyes had been restored. Lucy, whose name can mean light or lucid, is the patron saint of the blind. She is often seen with the emblem of eyes on a cup or plate. In paintings, she is often depicted with a golden plate holding her eyes and often holds a palm branch, which is a symbol of victory over evil. He found out that, contrary to his Protestant misunderstandings, the Church is coherent and never contradicts herself. Dr. Ray explains how the answers to his objections to Catholicism were both Biblical and believed by the earliest Christians. Explore the logic that led him to the fullness of truth. This CD can be found in the Gathering Room of the Church. 7 How were the prophets able to predict the coming of Jesus, the Messiah? The first reading for the Sundays of Advent is taken from Old Testament prophetic literature (with the exception of the reading from Samuel on the Fourth Sunday of Advent in Cycle B). These passages, along with most other prophetic literature, weren't intended as predictors of Jesus' birth, life, and mission. It is unfortunate that prophecy is commonly understood as predicting the future. A more accurate way to understand prophetic literature is to see it as addressing social, political, and religious issues of the day. By taking on the mind and heart of God, prophets call people to more faithful covenant living. Modern-day prophets such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King, or Dorothy Day do the same. So there are no predictions of Jesus in the Jewish Scriptures; rather, what we have is the reinterpretation of prophetic texts by followers of Jesus who understood these texts in a new light as a result of their Jesus experience and belief. The original texts, written at a specific time to address specific issues, were later reinterpreted and understood to contain other meanings. The process continues to our own day as we strive to apply the Scriptures to our twentyfirst-century faith reality. This is what makes the Bible a living text through which God continues to speak. Let us listen with open minds and hearts. The Weston Middle and High School Choirs will be performing at Saint Cecilia as part of their Holiday Performance Tour on Thursday, 22, at 1:30 p.m. All are invited to attend this free and informal performance of choral music and Christmas selections.
