3 To all my sons and daughters in Christ, I hope this message finds you all doing well and in preparation to walk through the season of Advent. My heart is still grieving over the death of our Bishop, Robert Morlino. A bishop is like a father to all the people of his Diocese and is so particularly to the priests of his Diocese. Certainly I experienced Bishop Morlino as such. I doubt I will ever have such a close relationship with a Bishop again. Funeral arrangements are as follows - Monday, December 3, prayer vigil with visitation from 1:00-7:00 p.m. at the O Donnell Chapel at Holy Name Heights, Madison. Solemn Vespers will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will continue until the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Madison. Please pray for the repose of his soul. We have a tremendous weekend at to commence Advent. Last Friday was the annual blessing and lighting of the Christmas Tree outside the front entrance to the church. Many thanks to all those who helped to set-up the tree. A special thank-you to the Dells Boat Company for bringing their lift and having some of their crew assist us. After the tree-lighting we had a tremendous concert in the church with a beautiful rendition of the Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi. What beauty in the praise of God and the musical art of the Church. To bring these treasures alive in our own parish church was amazing and very encouraging for the great possibilities that lie before us. May the good God bless all of you at the start of the holy season of Advent and know that I hold all of you and your families deep in prayer. I love you all like Jesus! Fr. Eric

6 THE MEANING OF THE ADVENT WREATH Most Advent wreaths use two colors - purple and pink. FIRST CANDLE (purple) - The Prophecy Candle or Candle of Hope - We can have hope because God is faithful and will keep the promises made to us. Our hope comes from God. And again, Isaiah says, The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:12-13) SECOND CANDLE (purple) - The Bethlehem Candle or The Candle of Preparation - God kept his promise of a Savior who would be born in Bethlehem. Preparation means to get ready. Help us to be ready to welcome YOU, O GOD! As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one calling in the desert, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways made smooth. And all mankind will see God s salvation. (Luke 3:4-6) THIRD CANDLE (pink) - The Shepherd Candle or The Candle of Joy - The angels sang a message of JOY!...and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about. (Luke2:7-15) FOURTH CANDLE (purple) - The Angel Candle or The Candle of Love - The angels announced the good news of a Savior. God sent his only Son to earth to save us, because he loves us! For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17) FULFILLED BIBLE STUDY - BEGINS JAN. 7, SESSIONS - $30.00 FULFILLED will help you: 1) Explain how Jesus fulfills the Old Testament; 2) Share the Catholic Faith concisely; 3) Acquire a thorough knowledge of the Tabernacle s design and its function as a blueprint for the Faith, 4) Learn how to answer incomplete and non-catholic interpretations of the Bible; 5) Examine your own faith and grow deeper in your relationship with Christ. If interested, contact Dave Kordell at or dkordell@dellscatholic.com KINGS CHALLENGE: Each day say the prayer Come Lord Jesus!

7 HAITI TRIP MEETING FOOD PANTRY HELP! Fr. Eric will join us for a brief meeting after the 6:00 p.m. Holy Day Vigil Mass Friday, December 7, in the Parish Office to answer any last questions before the first travel payment is due mid-december. Down payment of $ may be paid in the Parish Office, Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon and 1:00-4:00 p.m. Checks or credit cars are accepted for this trip to Haiti to visit our Sister Parish where Fr. Jocelyn thanks us and says all are welcome to visit. The trip departs Madison to Port-au-Prince on March 21 and returns to Madison on March 29, In November, the Food Pantry had a food drive for the needy. It was a great success. The committee wants to thank everyone that gave food. Please continue to give canned meats (chicken, beef), tuna, cereal, canned spaghetti, soups, snack pudding, laundry detergent, dish soap, Kleenex and toilet paper. The pantry is filled to the brim with: canned vegetables and noodles. Also, we cannot accept homemade pastries and cookies. Christmas is near, so please continue to give. Thank you! Advent is a journey towards Bethlehem. May we let ourselves be drawn by the light of God made man. Pope Francis 7
