No matter what our limitations or impediments may be, Jesus calls us to follow Him. Sometimes even when we don t realize it, we are being called. In the Gospel today, we hear Jesus cure Bartimaeus, the blind man who begged at the side of the road. But Jesus calls Bartimaeus as well. After receiving the gift of sight, Bartimaeus responds to Jesus call and follows Him. As we gather in Jesus name today, let us consider how He is calling us. How appropriate that we read this passage from Jeremiah as we approach All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Jeremiah speaks of God gathering the faithful from the ends of the world, guiding them so that none shall stumble (Jeremiah 31:9). The responsorial psalm echoes the passage from Jeremiah, describing Israel s deliverance from exile. God has reversed the fortune of the faithful: They go forth weeping (but) shall come back rejoicing (Palm 126:6). In all honesty, the history of the Chosen People in the course of the Old Testament is one of many reversals of fortune, both good and bad. But they could always look forward in hope because they had faith in the Lord. This faith is mirrored in Bartimaeus, leading Jesus to tell him, Go your way; your faith has saved you (Mark 10:52). Faith enables us to look forward in hope. The question that Jesus asks Bartimaeus is almost exactly the same as the one we heard Him ask James and John last week: What do you want me to do for you? (Mark 10:36, 10:51). But whereas James and John asked for power and glory, not seeing what they were asking of Jesus, Bartimaeus, the blind man, sees Jesus for who He is and asks for healing. Granted his request Bartimaeus immediately followed Jesus. In other words, he immediately became a disciple. Bartimaeus had been blind, but he had the eyes of faith all along. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: How would I answer the question Jesus has asked the last two weeks: What do you want me to do for you? 3 Page 3 ALL SOULS DAY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2018 ALL SOULS S DAY is the commemoration of the faithful departed and this day is observed principally in the Catholic Church. You may remember a deceased family member or friend at this time by using the Special All Soul s Offering Envelope from last week s bulletin or the ones in your pews this weekend. Many parishioners have commented on how they feel an extra closeness to their loved one by commemorating them in such a special way not only on All Souls Day but throughout the month of November. ST. BRENDAN COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN Please join us for our annual Mass for Deceased Members Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. (Please note the change to a Thursday due to Election Day on Tuesday), followed by our meeting and pot-luck lunch in Msgr. Mulligan Hall. Lunch is $5.00 (or bring a dessert to pass). CCW promotes the fellowship and spiritual welfare of our members while responding to the needs of the church and society. Come and help us put our faith in action through the many charitable, religious and social activities of this wonderful group of women in Christ. Next meeting is Tuesday, November 13, 2018 NAVIGATOR S NEWS NAVIGATORS WILL MEET NOVEMBER 14 TH Our next scheduled meeting will take place Wednesday evening November 14, Note the change. We normally meet the third Wednesday of the month. In November that would be the day before Thanksgiving. Accordingly, we changed the date to the second Wednesday which is the 14 th. Our version of Happy Hour begins at 5:00 p.m. and is followed by a featured Guest Speaker. After that there will be a delicious dinner prepared by our fellow Navigator Tom Kellner. A short business meeting follows. WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN Men of our parish -- you are cordially invited to join our Navigators Men s Club. Our President Dennis Murphy is standing by to sign you up and answer any questions you may have. We are proud to assist our Pastor, Father Eric in furthering the mission of our parish. We do this in many ways throughout the year including fund raising events like our Pancake Breakfasts after Sunday Masses and then donating that money to works of charity in the community. 5 Page 5 October 28, 2018 October: Respect Life Month Every week this month we will share with you a different topic developed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) for the Respect Life Program, a year-round, nationwide effort to help Catholics understand, value, and become engaged with cultivating respect for life. Each article can also be read in its full version at usccb.org. Sacraments Baptism Please contact the Parish Office to arrange for Baptism Preparation and to schedule a Baptism. Baptisms are not celebrated during the Lenten season. Marriage Couples are required to contact the Parish Office to make arrangements at least six to eight months in advance of the planned date. Anointing of the Sick Please contact the Parish Office if you would like to receive the Sacrament. For anointing following our daily Mass, please call the Parish Office a day ahead. Hospital Admission If you are admitted to the hospital, please have a friend or family member notify the Parish Office for visits and prayers for you. Communion for the Sick & Homebound Please contact the Visitation Ministry in the Parish Office to arrange to have Holy Communion brought to your home, nursing home or hospital. Parish Registration Please register with us so we may include you in our faith community. You may get a registration form from one of the ushers or in the Parish Office during regular business hours.

The Virginia Tree The Virginia Tree will be up next weekend! Please choose a tag or two from the tree, purchase the item listed, wrap the gift and attach the tag to the outside of the package so we can identify who the gift is for. If you select a tag that has DO NOT WRAP GIFT, place the unwrapped gift in a bag or box and attach the tag to the outside. Return all donated gifts to the church or parish office no later than Sunday, December 2 nd. Cash donations can be dropped in the collection basket during Mass, in an envelope marked Virginia Tree, or turned in at the Parish Office.
