3 To all my sons and daughters in Christ, We continue to have such beautiful weather and I praise the good God for it! On Monday, I was able to go hiking with my mother at Devil s Lake State Park and enjoy the beauty of creation (and even exercise a bit.) Many thanks to those who, over the past few weeks, have helped out so much with the Calvary Cemetery Clean-up and our annual Fall Leaf Raking Day. It was great to have so many helpers and I really appreciate those who give of their time to beautify our community. Certainly this past week has been momentous with the Presidential election and the election of so many other Federal and State leaders. Let s offer gracious prayers for President Obama and President-elect Trump as they prepare for the transition of power and let s pray for the spirit of goodwill to be present among all citizens and residents of this great nation. 5 SAINT OF THE WEEK: ST. ALBERT THE GREAT Sacramental Celebrations Baptism - Contact the Parish Office to make arrangements. A class may be required prior to baptism. Sacrament of Matrimony - Arrangements must be made with the Parish Priest six (6) months prior to anticipated date of wedding. Care of the Sick - Communion will be brought to the homebound and the sick who are confined to their homes each week. For new additions to the Communion List, please call the Parish Office by Wednesday noon. Albert was probably educated principally at the University of Padua, where he received instruction in Aristotle s writings. A late account by Rudolph de Novamagia refers to Albertus encounter with the Blessed Virgin Mary, who convinced him to enter Holy Orders. In 1223, he became a member of the Dominican Order, and studied theology at Bologna and elsewhere. Selected to fill the position of lecturer at Cologne, Germany, where the Dominicans had a house, he taught for several years there, as well as in Regensburg, Freiburg, Strasbourg, and Hildesheim. During his tenure as lecturer at Cologne, Albert wrote his Summa de bono after discussion with Philip the Chancellor concerning the transcendental properties of being. In 1245, Albert became master of theology under Gueric of Saint- Quentin, the first German Dominican to achieve this distinction. Following this turn of events, Albert was able to teach theology at the University of Paris as a full-time professor, holding the seat of the Chair of Theology at the College of St. James. During this time, Thomas Aquinas began to study under Albertus. Albert was the first to comment on virtually all of the writings of Aristotle, thus making them accessible to wider academic debate. The study of Aristotle brought him to study and comment on the teachings of Muslim academics, notably Avicenna and Averroes, and this would bring him into the heart of academic debate. After suffering a collapse of health in 1278, he died on 15, 1280, in the Dominican convent in Cologne, Germany. Since 15, 1954, his relics are in a Roman sarcophagus in the crypt of the Dominican St. Andreas Church in Cologne. Although his body was discovered to be incorrupt at the first exhumation three years after his death, at the exhumation in 1483, only a skeleton remained. Albert was beatified in He was canonized and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church on December 16, 1931, by Pope Pius XI and the patron saint of natural scientists in St. Albert s feast day is 15.

6 SUGGESTIONS TO FAMILIES FOR VOCATIONS AWARENESS 1. Speak of Christ - Speak often of Christ in terms that endear your children to Him. Let His name be part of the family vocabulary. 2. Teach the Lives of the Saints - Help your children grow, according to their age, in their relationship with God and knowledge of their faith. The lives of the saints are a great source of inspiration for children and adults. They should also be able to receive the sacrament of reconciliation frequently and have access to spiritual direction. 3. Prayer for Your Children s Vocations - Pray for your children and for whatever vocation God is calling them to, and teach them to do the same. The greatest and deepest wish of every parent for a child is that he or she discovers and does God s will for his or her life. This is your child s greatest guarantee of happiness, and your major concern. Prayer is necessary, since there will always be the tempting mirage of an easier way shimmering invitingly on the horizon for your child. 4. Protection of Jesus through Mary - Each morning, place the vocation of each of your children under the protection of Jesus through Mary. Be courageous and ask for the blessing that they be called to consecrated or priestly life. 5. Teach Your Children to Be Open - Teach your children to be open to God by your example. They are going to absorb your priorities from the thousand ways you reflect them during your day. Try to imitate Mary in the way you deal with your children. Love them as you teach them to love Christ. 6. Don t Push, but Don t be Silent - Do not push priesthood or consecrated life on them, but don t be silent either. Answer questions, at times bring them up yourself, and raise possibilities, but do so always with a sense of freedom and love. 7. Enable Participation in Outreach, Service or Missionary Work - This participation is very important for young people. It is here that they ll see how much Christ and the Church need them, and begin to understand how much they ve received and how much they have to give. 8. Demonstrate a Healthy and Beautiful Married and Family Life - Most vocations come from Catholic homes where the faith is practiced and passed on, and where the children grow up experiencing in their own homes the beauty and dignity of the married vocation and the fidelity and depth of true love. 7 SAINT CECILIA GIFTING TREE 2016 ONLY 10 APPLICATIONS REMAINING! Saint Cecilia is accepting applications for this year s Gifting Tree. Applications can be picked up at the Parish Office during regular office hours and must be received by Friday, 18, at 4:00 p.m. Children must be registered in the Wisconsin Dells School District. Pick up date is Tuesday, December 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Center Cafeteria. If you have been a recipient of this program over the past two years or if you are registered with another program to receive help, you will not be not eligible.
