3 To all my sons and daughters in Christ! Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout for joy, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold your Kind will come to you; the Just One and Savior. He is poor and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zach. 9:9) HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE TUESDAY, MARCH 22 - CHRISM MASS, 7:30 P.M., ST. MARIA GORETTI, MADISON This prophecy was fulfilled by Jesus on the great day we solemnly celebrate today, Palm Sunday, of the Lord s Passion. We, like the people of old, sing great Hosanna and carry our palms and offer our hearts to Jesus, the Son of David, who entered Jerusalem as King. Thus did God, in His power over human hearts give a triumph to His Son in the very city which, a few days later, the people would clamor for His blood. This is the glorious mystery which ushers in the great week, the week of sorrows, the week of mysteries, the week of joys Holy Week. The Church would have us hail Jesus as King today and so prepare ourselves for the sorrow and the joy to come. We bless the palms and sing with joy, we hear the Passion of our Lord and feel the sorrow caused by sin. THURSDAY, MARCH 24 - HOLY THURSDAY MASS, 7:00 P.M.; EU- CHARISTIC ADORATION FROM END OF MASS UNTIL MIDNIGHT FRIDAY, MARCH 25 - GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE, 1:00 P.M. SATURDAY, MARCH 26 - BLESS- ING OF EASTER BASKETS, 12:00 NOON; EASTER VIGIL MASS, 8:30 P.M. Listen to the Passion read over it this week. Does it not pull your heart nearer and nearer to the Lord Jesus, does it not help you to pray more fervently when we offer the Mass? How good Holy Mother Church is to preserve these rituals which call all her children back to God and move them to fall deeper into His Heart. I ask you my dear children in Christ come and celebrate these great mysteries, especially Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil. There is now, just as in ages past, an ocean of grace waiting for you. Pray also for your silly pastor, that he will persevere in God s grace and celebrate, with you, a beautiful Easter. I love you all like Jesus! Fr. Eric SUNDAY, MARCH 27 - EASTER SUNDAY MASSES, 8:00 A.M., 10:00 A.M., AND 10:15 A.M. (Cafeteria basement) On Monday, 28, Saint Cecilia parishioners have the opportunity to visit Willet Hauser, architectural glass designers, of Winona, MN. This is the company who is restoring the windows for our new church. We will leave after 8:00 a.m. Mass, stop for lunch, tour their facility and then return home. Cost: $25.00 per person. Contact Laurie Grill ( , ext. 116) if you are interested. Deadline to register: 21.

When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace in a troubled land. In these challenging times in the Middle East, your support means that our Church will conduct parish ministry, provide Catholic education, feed the hungry, build housing for Christians, maintain shrines and operate refugee centers in the Holy Land. Christians, along with all of the clergy and religious who serve in the Holy Land, will deeply appreciate your prayers and financial help! The political, religious and military challenges in the Holy Land are more complex than ever. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. Our Parish will support Christians in the Holy Land through the Good Friday Collection, as requested by Pope Francis. Like Simon of Cyrene, you can help carry the cross under very difficult circumstances in the Holy Land. Please be generous! CD Week #10 - The Second Greatest Story Ever Told - $3.00 In this vastly popular talk, Fr. Gaitley describes the "second greatest story ever told" - a story that encompasses Divine Mercy, the life of St. Pope John Paul II, and the crucial role that Marian Consecration can play in your life. Fr. Michael Gaitley is a priest in the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception and the director of the Association of Marian Helpers, a spiritual benefit society with more than one million members.

6 TRIDUUM: THE HOLIEST TIME OF THE YEAR Easter day is the most important day of the church year. The Resurrection is the focal point of the Christian faith. Without it, everything else crumbles. The First Christians, Jewish Christians, moved their day of worship from the Sabbath, the last day of the week, to Sunday the first day of the week, the day of Jesus Resurrection. Easter Sunday, the first day of the 50 day Easter Season, came later. Lent came even later. At first, the church did not even celebrate Good Friday. The focus for at least two centuries was the Easter Vigil. Christians met for worship on Saturday evening and continued in prayer until about 3:00 a.m. Easter Sunday, when they celebrated Eucharist. They prepared for this event by fasting on Saturday; then they extended the fasting to Friday, Good Friday, (a period of 40 hours when Jesus body lay in the tomb). Later still, the church extended the period of fasting to Monday and thus began Holy Week as we know it. A distinct framework of Holy Week seems to have developed in Jerusalem, itself, sometime during the 4th century. Those who lived nearby gathered publicly and relived the events with songs, processions, vigils. Much of what is known comes from bits and pieces of diaries of pilgrims who visited the Holy Land during this period. In time, these practices were brought to Europe and were incorporated into the official liturgies of what would become Holy Week. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, now called Passion Sunday. It combines the two traditions: the Jerusalem custom of the blessing and procession with palms, celebrating Christ s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, and the Romans custom of the solemn proclamation of the Passion. For the Semitic person, the palm tree has always been a tree of honor: it marked the place where water could be found for the flocks. Palms are also placed on the graves of some Semitic people to symbolize eternal life. Palms (and cloaks) spread along the road would act as a kind of shock absorber for the donkey s feet. The Book of Zechariah prophesied a savior who will ride a donkey, symbolizing peace, rather than a horse, that would remind the people of the terror brought by the Roman soldiers. The liturgical color is red, symbolizing blood. Holy Thursday begins the Sacred Triduum or three days, the holiest time of the church year. The oldest name for this day is The Mass of the Lord s Supper. Remembering the Institution of the Holy Eucharist and the call to ministry is the heart of Holy Thursday observance. Other rituals include the solemn processions and reception of the sacramental oils blessed by the bishop, and the washing of the feet, found in John s Gospel. After communion, the altar is stripped and Father carries the consecrated bread to the place of repose, where adoration follows. The liturgical color is white. Good Friday is the one day of the year that Mass is not celebrated. During the first centuries, no Eucharist was celebrated on weekdays. It took on special meaning on Good Friday, emphasizing the sacrificial dimension of Jesus. As a result we have the Liturgy of the Word passion narrative, Psalms, Isaiah readings, general intercessions, veneration of the cross and a simple communion service. Key symbol is the cross, the color red. Continued from left: Easter Sunday did not exist in the early church. What we celebrate as Easter occurred during the hours before dawn at the Easter Vigil. Christians would keep the vigil all night and baptize the catechumens just before dawn when they would celebrate the Eucharist. Our Easter Vigil is divided into four parts: Blessing and Lighting of the Easter Candle; Liturgy of the Word proclaiming all the wonderful things God has done for us; Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation for those candidates about to enter the Church and a renewal of vows for the faithful; the Liturgy of the Eucharist Celebration. The liturgical color is white Totally Yours - St. John Paul II CATHOLIC SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM July 11-15, 2016 Grades 1-6 Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. $20.00/child, $50.00/family Contact Dave Kordell at dkordell@dellscatholic.com SAINT CECILIA YOUTH MINISTRY IS HEADING TO THE MISSION FIELD Love Begins Here is a local Mission Trip apostolate in the Diocese of Madison.
