3 Now celebrating its 34th year of operation, Food For The Poor (FFP) is an interdenominational Christian relief and development organization working primarily in 17 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.. By working together with pastors, missionaries, partner organizations, clinics, community leaders and churches in these regions, they ensure that aid reaches those who need it most. Food For The Poor does much more than feed hundreds of thousands of hungry people each day. They provide emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance. Since being founded in 1982, Food For The Poor has distributed more than 75,000 containers of aid to the poor. They have also built more than 107,000 housing units for people in need of safe shelter, and completed more than 2,286 water projects that provide lifesaving water and sanitation to hundreds of thousands of people in need. In 2015, Food For The Poor shipped 3,660 containers of aid and built 9,431 new housing units for families in need of shelter. Fundraising and other administrative costs comprise less than 5% of their expenses; more than 95% of all donations go directly to programs that help the poor. Their fruit tree program, started in 2007, has resulted in the planting of more than 2 million fruit trees in Haiti, Jamaica and Nicaragua. Their Angels Of Hope sponsors support more than 5,200 children in 156 orphanages throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, where the children receive food, clothing, shelter, education and lots of love. The Catholic Church asks each member to preserve the penitential character and purpose of Lent by attending to the following fast and abstinence regulations. Lent fasting and abstinence rules for Catholics are: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays in Lent, including Good Friday. Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday and are under 59 years of age, are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fasts: only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted. When health and ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these prescribed minimal penitential practices.
