7 A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?" So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. ACTS 10:44-48 A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF JOHN Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. JOHN 15:9-17 Our guest Organist Valerie Hall shares these notes on today s music at 10:30am Today's gospel is rich with messages of love - certainly God's love for us, but also the sacrifice of love that we are commanded to offer one another. This morning's music all flows from this message, beginning with our gratitude for Christ's Paschal sacrifice in the Introit, through hymns which expound upon this theme, and culminating in the beautiful Ubi caritas motet: Where love and charity abound, God is there. This much loved setting by Maurice Duruflé is paired with a wonderful postlude by the same composer. The liturgy is preceded by one of Franck's most enduring melodies in the Prélude, Fugue et Variation. MAY 10,

Welcome to Organist/Director of Music candidate: This morning we welcome Valerie Hall to CCAS. Valerie is the final of four invited auditionees for the position of Organist and Director of Music, replacing John Hudson, beginning this fall. She has been here the past few days, learning our Organ, and working with the Senior Choir of the Cathedral. Valerie did her undergraduate studies in Organ at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Her additional studies include a Masters degree in Organ Performance from Concordia University in Lake Forest, Illinois. A member of several professional musical organizations, Valerie is a Past National President of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO), and a frequent performer on both Organ and Harpsichord. She has enjoyed a busy career of musicmaking, including positions of Organists and Directors of Music at a range of churches in Western Canada, including three cathedrals. 12 Don t Fault the Organist! I want to thank you, members of the congregation, for your patience and support over these past four weeks as we have welcomed our guest organists/candidates to our cathedral. Some people have asked about the amount and style of music incorporated into the services. We were no doubt remiss in not sharing with you the expectations we placed before each of the candidates. With only one Sunday to audition we asked them to demonstrate a variety of musical styles and traditions. Each was asked to select 5 hymns they felt appropriate to the lections for the day; to prepare an Introit and Communion anthem, (one to be accompanied, one a cappella ); to prepare an organ Prelude and Postlude, contrasting in styles. As a committee, we pre-selected the psalm setting, the Mass setting (and parts to be sung or spoken), the Eucharistic Prayer; and opted not to include a closing Choral Benediction from the back of the church. Our aim was to enable candidates to demonstrate their creativity yet also assure that each one was operating under similar parameters for assessment. Annual Greeter Gathering There has been confusion about scheduling our annual gathering for Greeters at the Cathedral. However, a definitive date has been set for Saturday May 23 at 10:00 a.m. If you are currently a Cathedral Greeter or would like to join the team, you are invited to attend for a morning of coffee and conversation. Diocesan Synod Synod is a meeting of Anglicans from a diversity of backgrounds and communities who bear the responsibility of representing the whole church in the Diocese. Your delegates are Mike Mackenzie, Bruce Langille and Sheila Gordon. They will be attending the 146th session of synod for the Dioceses of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, from May 28 to 30, 2015, on behalf of the Cathedral congregation. 16 From the PWRDF The Needs are Great in Nepal By Simon Chambers The earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25 devastated a region from Kathmandu to Mount Everest, killing over 7000, damaging or destroying 700,000 houses, and destroying roads so that some remote districts are still only accessible by helicopter. PWRDF has been responding to the needs of those affected by the earthquake through the ACT Alliance, a global alliance of 140 church-based agencies engaged in relief, development and advocacy work. Through the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), another ACT member, PWRDF has helped to provide food, blankets, and tarpaulins to 820 families in the hardest hit areas of the Kathmandu valley. Volunteers are helping to pack up relief goods- 2kg of rice, six packages of ready-to-eat noodles, two packages of biscuits, a tarpaulin and a blanket- for distribution to families in need. According to LWF, Lack of shelter remains the biggest challenge. The need for tarpaulins by far exceeds the number given out. With over 900,000 people still sleeping outside, this need is clear. LWF and other ACT members are assessing the needs in the region, working closely with the Nepalese government to coordinate their relief efforts. We have started by working in government-managed camps, said LWRDF emergen- MAY 10,

17 cy team coordinator Gopal Dahal, but as we saw a great need for assistance in self-managed camps, we have also started to cover these camps and the affected population. Your help is needed to supply tarpaulins, blankets, food and other relief supplies, and to begin the rebuilding process in Nepal. All donations to PWRDF between April 25 and May 25, 2015 for the Nepal earthquake relief efforts will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Government of Canada into their Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund, which will be used to provide humanitarian relief in the wake of this catastrophe.
