Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. PHILIPPIANS 4:4-7 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?" He said to them, "Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what should we do?" He said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages." As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." 9 alert to gender-based violence in any form remains; plus, one can wear the white ribbon year round! Amnesty International s annual, global, letter-writing campaign to support those whose basic human rights are being violated coincides with the concluding day of the White Ribbon Campaign, the United Nations International Human Rights Day (December 10) marking the anniversary of the presentation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is significant that the focus of this year s letter-writing campaign was to honour specific women globally who are rising against injustice and the violation of basic human rights. These brave, courageous women face daunting obstacles. We uphold them in prayer. Reconnect with the Rev. Dawn Davis and learn about Revive WHEN: Friday, Dec. 21 9:30 a.m; WHERE: Synod Office, Halifax; WHO: Any clergy or lay leaders. Cathedral members will remember when the Rev. Canon Dr. Dawn Davis was an associate at our Cathedral. Dawn has gone on to do many great things since being with us (she has earned her doctorate and was recently appointed Faith Formation Coordinator in the Diocese of Niagara, ON). Dawn s most recent undertaking is the authorship of Revive, a discipleship program to help active lay leaders - wardens, property and finance officers, committee chairs, council members, church school teachers, youth ministers, pastoral visitors, and liturgical ministers - grow in confidence as spiritual leaders. Revive is about transformation through spiritual formation. The three-part leadership development series focuses on: 1. communicating with God (rediscovering prayer); 2. engaging in Scripture; and, 3. being called for Ministry. 10 New Year s Day Levée Archbishop Ron Cutler is pleased to extend an invitation to the Annual New Year s Day Eucharist at 10 am followed by a reception and Levée. Traditionally the Levée is hosted by our Cathedral Congregation and we are grateful for the many contributions of food and hospitality made each year by Cathedral members. We are also deeply indebted to Alice Jessop who for many years has coordinated this event. This year Alice retires from her duties with our thanks and deep appreciation. Please purchase your gift at shelternovascotia.com Out of the Cold 2018 and 2019 The Outreach Committee on behalf of the Congregation of the Cathedral Church of All Saints has once again taken on the Ministry of supplying evening snacks to the Out of the Cold Shelter at St. Matthews Church, Barrington Street, Halifax. We will supply the snacks on each Tuesday for the months of December 2018, January, February, March, and April, These snacks are available to the guests who arrive at the Shelter at approximately 8p.m. each evening of the week. Our part in this Ministry is to deliver snacks on Tuesday of each month. A sign-up sheet and details of the food required and drop off instructions are set out on the sheet at the back of the Church. Our part is to prepare and deliver the items between the hours of 11a.m. and 3p.m. each Tuesday. The cost of the groceries that you purchase will be reimbursed by the Outreach Committee. (Please keep your grocery receipts so we will know how much is given to this Ministry) If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Outreach Committee. Outreach to Infants One of our outreach projects is the Mother and Child support Programme at Phoenix House. Infant related items, baby food, formula, wipes, diapers etc. are always in need. Please consider bringing an item to the Nursery on Sundays in support of this program. Thank you! A gallery exhibit well worth seeing What? Mentor & Metalsmith: The silver art of Arthur Brecken & Wesley Harris. When? Until December 21, 2018, Tues.- Fri, 9 5; Sun, Where? Mary E. Black Gallery, 1061 Marginal Road, Suite 140 (just beyond the Seaport Market). The exquisite body of work in this exhibit has toured across Canada. The individual pieces, rendered in silver and other metals, as well as gem stones, include jewellery, bowls, pitchers, spoons, tea sets, chalices, perfume bottles, letter openers, boxes, and purely decorative items. The artist, Wesley Harris, is expected to be at the Mary E. Black Gallery on December 21. He speaks of his late mentor, Arthur Brecken, the son of missionaries, with love and respect. DECEMBER 16,

14 The Third Sunday of Advent JOY Reader: We move from one task to another, from one responsibility to another. The holidays may wear us out with worries about preparations, about family relationships, about money, about presents! People: We are scattered and busy about too many things. Reader: We call out in our fatigue: People: Where is your joy, O God? Where is your gift of presence in our lives? Reader: We remind ourselves of St. Paul's ancient advice: "Celebrate God all day.revel in God! Help everyone see that the Master is about to arrive!... Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It is wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life." (Philippians 4: 4-7, paraphrase) Let us light this third candle of Advent, a candle of Joy. (the pink candle is lit) In its light, let us turn our worries into prayers for God to be present to us right now, as we prepare for the coming of Christ.
