3 Welcome to the Cathedral Church of All Saints, where Sunday services reflect a variety of liturgical traditions. As you enter and prepare for worship, remember that an earlier service may be in progress. Please respect the solemnity of worship by being as quiet as possible. As a Cathedral community, we acknowledge that we are in Mi kma ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi kmaq People. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship which Mi kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) people first signed with the British Crown in The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations. A warm welcome is extended to any visitors to our Cathedral Church and we ask that you sign the Guest Book located near the Main Door. 8AM HOLY COMMUNION THE SIXTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Book of Common Prayer Propers 242 Introit Psalm 146: Gradual 146: AM HOLY COMMUNION SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Book of Alternative Services Piano Prelude Entrée from Suite for Orchestra & Strings Henry Purcell ( ) are invited to receive communion at all of our liturgies of the Eucharist. Boyce (Sung by the choir) 1 The heavens declare the glory of God; / and the firmament showeth his handy-work. 2 One day telleth another; / and one night certifieth another. 3 There is neither speech nor language; / their voice cannot be heard; 4 Yet their sound is gone out into all lands; / and their words into the ends of the world. 5 In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun; / which cometh forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a giant to run his course. 6 It goeth forth from the uttermost part of the heaven, and runneth about unto the end of it again; / and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. 7 The law of the Lord is an undefiled law, restoring the soul; / the testimony of the Lord is sure, and giveth wisdom unto the simple. 8 The precepts of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart; / the commandment of the Lord is pure, and giveth light unto the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, and endureth for ever; / the judgements of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; / sweeter also than honey, and the honey-comb. 11 Moreover, by them is thy servant taught; / and in keeping of them there is great reward. 12 Who can tell how oft he offendeth? / O cleanse thou me from my secret faults. 13 Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the dominion over me; / so shall I be undefiled and innocent from the great offence. 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be alway acceptable in thy sight, / O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Help us so to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may turn to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Holy God, accept all we offer you this day. May we who are reconciled at this table bring wholeness to our broken world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION God of peace, in this eucharist we have been reconciled to you and to our neighbours. May we who have been nourished by holy things always have the courage to forgive. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF PROVERBS Wisdom cries out in the street; in the squares she raises her voice. At the busiest corner she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: "How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Give heed to my reproof; I will pour out my thoughts to you; I will make my words known to you. Because I have called and you refused, have stretched out my hand and no one heeded, and because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, I also will laug h at your calamity; I will mock when panic strikes you, when panic strikes you like a storm, and y our calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but will not find me. Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord, would have none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof, therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way and be sated with their own devices. For waywardness kills the simple, and the complacency of fools destroys them; but those who listen to me will be secure and will live at ease, without dread of disaster." PROVERBS 1:20-33 A READING FROM THE LE TTER O F JAMES Not many of you shou ld become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is SEPTEMBER 16,
9 perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our me mbers as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the tongue a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh. JAMES 3:1-12 THE HOLY GOSPE L OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things." He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." MARK 8:27-38 SEPTEMBER 16,
10 PSALM 19 Chant No. 9 The heavens declare the glo-/ry of God,* and the firmament / shows his handiwork. One day tells its tale / to another,* and one night imparts knowledge / to another. Although they have no / words or language,* and their voices / are not heard, their sound has gone out in-/to all lands,* and their message to the ends / of the world. In the deep has he set a pavilion / for the sun;* it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber; it rejoices like a champion to / run its course. It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens and runs about to the end of / it again;* nothing is hidden from its / burning heat. The law of the Lord is perfect and re-/vives the soul;* the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom / to the innocent. The statutes of the Lord are just and re-/joice the heart;* the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light / to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean and en-/dures forever;* the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous / altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, more than / much fine gold,* sweeter far than honey, than honey / in the comb. By them also is your ser-/vant enlightened,* and in keeping them there is / great reward. Who can tell how often / he offends?* Cleanse me from my / secret faults. SEPTEMBER 16,
11 Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins; let them not get dominion / over me;* then shall I be whole and sound, and innocent of a / great offense. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable / in your sight,* O Lord, my strength and / my redeemer. 13 SUNDAYS AT FOUR Our Sundays at Four series for this season begins next Sunday, September 23 rd with Evensong sung by Capella Regalis Men & Boys Choir, featuring great English Cathedral music by Tallis and Walmisley, and Wesley s magnificent anthem Blessed Be the God and Father. The following Sunday, September 30 th, the Cathedral Choir will sing Evensong featuring music focused on the themes of exile, peace, and our true home. This service will be followed by a Potluck Supper in the Great Hall to welcome the two Syrian families hosted by the Cathedral congregation. The Sundays at Four brochure will be available next week. Cathedral Restoration Work Behind the scenes this summer significant restoration work has again been going on at the Cathedral. The area of focus has been the South Lawn transept, particularly in the area of St. Luke s Chapel and the large stained glass window. Last year major work was carried out in the area of the tower and above the Columbarium, this work revealed significant deterioration of the structural integrity of the walls, and this year we continue the work around the corner and to the wall containing the large window. While you may not see evidence of the work from inside the building, the scaling and deterioration of interior walls visible in the St. Luke s Chapel and window areas reveal the extent of water infiltration over the years and the critical need to prevent further damage and address the overall wall stability. We are extremely fortunate to have financial investments to cover the cost of this work, a testimony to the generosity and foresight of parishioners in the past, but we are also acutely aware that restoration efforts will continue to be required in the years to come that will significantly impact our investment portfolio. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated. SEPTEMBER 16,
